People Jailed For Owing Less Taxes Than Al Sharpton

Serial tax avoidance appears to be a hallmark of Al Sharpton’s operations. But there’s a warning here: Others have gone to prison for lesser amounts. The list includes rock legend Chuck Berry, Grammy winner Lauryn Hill, Ron Isley of the Isley Brothers, Survivor reality star Richard Hatch, hotel queen Leona Helmsely, and baseball’s Pete Rose (see below).

According to a New York Times' review of government records last fall, the MSNBC host and civil rights activist personally faces federal tax liens for more than $3 million in back taxes owed, and state tax liens of $777,657. So in total, Sharpton reportedly owes more than $3.7 million in back taxes. His other two for-profit businesses, Raw Talent and Revals Communications, (both now defunct) owe anywhere from $717,000 to more than $800,000, based on state and federal tax liens, reports from the Times andNational Review indicate. Revals Communications also either didn’t file its tax returns, or underpaid its tax bills from 1999 to 2002.

Go ahead: Break election laws and violate tax rules, inviting federal fines you never pay.

You might just end up like civil-rights leader Al Sharpton, who now hosts MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, a nightly news show that serves as a de facto soapbox for his liberal political views.

On the program, Sharpton regularly defends the IRS, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department, against conservatives’ criticism that the agency gave special scrutiny to right-leaning nonprofit groups,

“There was no conspiracy for the IRS to target conservatives. So why are some Republicans so obsessed about all of them?” Sharpton shouted during a show last February.

What Sharpton doesn’t tell viewers is that his 2004 presidential committee owes the U.S. Treasury $19,500 a decade after being caught accepting illegal campaign contributions, according to federal records. It also owes the Federal Election Commission several thousand dollars in unpaid fines, even after paying off a separate $208,000 penalty in 2009 for several campaign violations.

Sharpton’s saga, while extreme, is hardly unique.

It is difficult to evaluate whether Sharpton or the NY Times is telling the truth. Sharpton didn’t really address the newspaper’s charges — he answered different questions. And it is hard to believe that the bible of the progressive movement, the NY Times, is attacking Al Sharpton for political reasons.

If the story does turn out to be false, it would be a wonderful demonstration of karma. Despite the fact that he’s a Baptist minister, Al Sharpton regularly breaks the ninth commandment, “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” He has incited riots; he has falsely accused people of crimes, made disparaging remarks about people without any justification.

N.Y. Post: Sharpton, businesses owe $4.7 million in tax debt

The Rev. Al Sharpton, along with his nonprofit National Action Network and two for-profit firms, have $4.7 million in outstanding debt and liens, according to federal and state tax records, the New York Post reported on Sunday.

Among the debts include $806,875 that Sharpton owes the state, along with $2.6 million in federal liens against him for unpaid personal income taxes, the Post stated.

Recent filings showed the National Action Network owed $813,576 to the federal government at the end of 2012, and his company Rev-Al Communications owes $447,826 to the state, while the Bo-Spanky Consulting firm has $18.21 in outstanding debt, according to the Post.

Sharpton told the Post he's paying down the debts according to negotiated agreements.

"It's significantly less. It's nowhere near the millions of dollars. We have totally lived up to our agreement with them," Sharpton the Post. "It's being paid down."

In 1987, the controversial preacher stood by then-15-year-old Wappingers Falls resident Tawana Brawley's side after she was found in a trash bag, covered in feces and racial slurs.

She claimed she was abducted and raped by a group of white men, among them Steven Pagones, who was a prosecutor with the Dutchess County's District Attorney's Office.

The fact that Sharpton is given any credibility is "despicable," Pagones said to the Poughkeepsie Journal on Sunday evening. "The guy has caused so many problems and so much racial tension in the past. I don't understand how people, politicians can afford him the credibility."

Lacking physical evidence or eyewitnesses, Sharpton repeatedly identified Pagones as Brawley's attacker, according to Journal archives. A specially impaneled grand jury, called by then-Gov. Mario Cuomo, determined Brawley's story was phony.

That case brought national media attention and racial tension to Dutchess County.

Pagones sued Brawley, Sharpton and others for defamation in 1998.

The jury awarded Pagones $345,000, including $65,000 from Sharpton for making seven defamatory statements. The reverend's friends and supporters like lawyer Johnnie Cochran Jr. and businessman Percy Sutton covered the debt.
