Rathergate Drama ‘Truth’ Gets October 16 Release Date From Sony Classics

Truth, the upcoming film based on the 2004 “Rathergate” scandal from Sony Pictures Classics, now has a release date aimed to prime the film for consideration during awards season. The pic starring Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett will hit select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on October 16, with wide release to follow.

“Rathergate” refers to the drama surrounding the story, reported by Mary Mapes and Dan Rather for CBS, that President George W. Bush might have been AWOL from his service in the National Guard for over a year during the height of the Vietnam War. Encapsulating perhaps the final time longer wounds from the Vietnam War would impact U.S. elefctoral politics, the news rocked the contentious 2004 presidential race, coming just as Democratic candidate John Kerry was facing accusations of falsehoods about his own military service. Very quickly, the authenticity of primary documents obtained for the report was called into question by several experts, ultimately leading to the the discrediting of the entire story. In the ensuing fallout, Mapes was fired and Rather forced into retirement.

Robert Redford Sees 'Last Chance' To Fix Climate

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - Robert Redford told the United Nations on Monday that negotiations on a global deal to tackle climate change could be the world's "last chance" to save the planet.

"This December, the world must unite behind a common goal," said the American actor and producer.

"Because look, this is it. This is our only planet, our only life source.

"This may be our last chance."

World governments will try to forge a new global accord to address climate change at a UN climate conference in Paris in December, with both developed and developing countries committing to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The landmark agreement would limit global warming to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (two degrees Celsius) from pre-industrial revolution levels as of 2020.

"We are all responsible for this crisis," Redford told the gathering. "Your mission is as simple as it is daunting: save the world before it's too late."

Redford pointed to global warming fueling extreme weather such as the deadly heatwaves in India and Pakistan that have claimed thousands of lives.

Robert Redford To Grads: The World Is Grim

WATERVILLE, Maine — Two-time Academy Award winner Robert Redford is encouraging college graduates to be fearless in a world of challenges and to become collaborators with others and the environment to overcome life’s daunting difficulties.

Redford was the commencement speaker Sunday at Maine’s Colby College. He received an honorary fine arts degree from the school before an audience of thousands, including nearly 500 graduates.

“You’re stepping into a world that’s, well, pretty rough. It’s pretty chaotic, pretty divisive,” Redford told them. “You’ve got climate change, you’ve got debt, you’ve got wars, you’ve got political paralysis. It’s kind of a grim story. But the story, I think, can be retold, and I really believe that you’re the ones to do it.”

The 78-year-old actor, director and producer told the graduates they have been given the tools to make a difference.

George Lucas offered a bleak assessment of the current state of the film business during a panel discussion with Robert Redford at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, saying that the movies are “more and more circus without any substance behind it.”

However, the “Star Wars” director hit back at critics who said his role in kicking off the blockbuster film business has watered down cinematic storytelling.

“If you go into ‘Star Wars’ and see what’s going on there, there’s a lot more substance than circus,” he argued.

In its day, “Star Wars” represented a major breakthrough in technology, and it’s easy to discern a throughline from the galaxy far, far away to the comic book movies and special-effects driven productions that dominate today’s movie screens. The tools he helped popularize were all in the service of plot, he argued.

The actor claims he paid the taxes in Utah and doesn't owe any more money.

Robert Redford is suing New York state related to the sale of Sundance Channel.

The actor-director sued the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany County Supreme Court on July 30 claiming that he's being overtaxed on money his company made when it sold off a stake in the channel in 2005.

According to Courthouse News Service, Redford is being taxed $1.6 million by New York ($845,066 in taxes plus $727,404 in interest owed) on the money he made. But Redford, a Utah resident, says he paid taxes on the revenue in Utah and therefore doesn't owe New York.

He is seeking "a declaratory ruling on a pure question of law concerning the constitutionality of imposing on plaintiff, a nonresident of the State of New York, a personal income tax on the gain derived from the sale of an ownership interest in a limited liability company," according to the complaint.

Pitzer College’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Fossil Fuel Divestment-Climate Action Model during a special trustee meeting on Saturday, April 5. Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley and Trustees Robert Redford and Donald Gould made the formal announcement during a press conference at noon on April 12 at the Los Angeles Press Club in Los Angeles, Calif. Pitzer College is the first higher education institution in Southern California to commit to divesting its endowment of fossil fuel stocks.

“I continue to marvel at Pitzer College’s ability to take risks that pay off and go where many other educational institutions dare not go,” said Pitzer Trustee Robert Redford. “With student-activists as a galvanizing force, today’s announcement makes Pitzer the first college or university in Southern California to divest, and the first to come up with an innovative solution that other organizations can model.”

Pitzer College’s new integrated Fossil Fuel Divestment-Climate Action Model:

  • Divests virtually all College endowment investments in fossil fuel stocks by December 31, 2014
  • Develops an environmental, social and governance policy to guide endowment investment decisions
  • Creates the Pitzer Sustainability Fund within the endowment to make environmentally responsible investments
  • Targets a 25 percent reduction of the College’s carbon footprint from current levels by the end of 2016
  • Establishes a Campus Sustainability Taskforce to bolster on-campus measures to promote sustainability
