First Lady Michelle Obama urged students at Tuskegee University, a historically black university in Alabama, to remain involved in civic life during a time of tension regarding race relations across the country.

At the school's commencement address, the First Lady listed scenarios in which African-Americans feel they encounter systemic discrimination, such as "nagging worries that you're going to get stopped or pulled over for absolutely no reason." She said those feelings are "real," but disengaging is not an option.

"I want to be very clear that those feelings are not an excuse to just throw up our hands and give up. Not an excuse. They are not an excuse to lose hope. To succumb to feelings of despair and anger only means that in the end, we lose," Obama said.

The comments come a week after violent riots brought Baltimore to a halt following the arrest and death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a black man who died as a result of injuries sustained during his apprehension. Maryland State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has charged all six Baltimore Police Department officers involved in Gray's arrest for offenses including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.

If Rand Paul thinks black people are rooting for black crack dealers to go free, he's even crazier than his old man.

It was African-Americans, exploding in rage at the devastation crack was inflicting on their neighborhoods in the 1980s, who demanded severe penalties for crack cocaine. In a typical news story from 1986, Julius Lee, the black city commissioner in Fort Pierce, Florida, said, "Drugs are terrible things, but these cocaine rocks are the terriblest of the terrible." Black grocer Eugene Gibson sadly remarked, while sweeping the sidewalk in front of his store, "We're in a world of trouble here. ... It's these cocaine rocks."

Indeed, statistics support a very different narrative than the one usually offered by “race hustlers,” as Pastor C.L. Bryant calls them, who routinely portray an America where members of the black community are selectively targeted and brutalized by white racists.

A 2007 special report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, reveals that approximately 8,000 — and, in certain years, as many as 9,000 African Americans are murdered annually in the United States. This chilling figure is accompanied by another equally sobering fact, that 93% of these murders are in fact perpetrated by other blacks. The analysis, supported by FBI records, finds that in 2005 alone, for example, African Americans accounted for 49% of all homicide victims in the US — again, almost exclusively at the hands of other African Americans.

Ferguson Obscures Much Bigger Problems in the 'Black Community' By Larry Elder

From the very beginning, this was much ado about an aberration, a tragic aberration to be sure, but an aberration nonetheless.

Michael Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9, 2014. Immediately, according to St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch, witnesses began to give different versions of what happened.

The apparent would-be star witness, Dorian Johnson, was with Brown when the shooting occurred. He gave a dramatic account of a trigger-happy bigoted cop who shot "my friend" in the back and gunned him down despite the victim attempting to surrender by placing his hands up. Other alleged eyewitnesses came forward with similar, if not identical, descriptions of an aggressive, out-of-control cop.

Several witnesses, according to McCulloch, later changed their testimony, with some admitting that they really didn't see the incident -- just heard about it and so filled in the blanks in their own mind. And some witnesses were simply proven wrong by the physical evidence. Others corroborated the officer's account.

McCulloch explained why more information wasn't released in a "timely" fashion: "Those closely guarded details, especially about the physical evidence, give law enforcement a yardstick for measuring the truthfulness of witnesses." McCulloch explained that a trail of Brown's blood led from the police car, and was found 25 feet farther away from where Brown's body lay -- suggesting Brown turned and came toward Wilson, as the officer said. "Physical evidence," said McCulloch, "does not change because of public pressure or personal agenda."

After summarizing the evidence, McCullough ended his press conference with a note of hope. He said don't let this "fade away ... we have to keep that discussion going."

But the "discussion" we should have is one we rarely do -- that is, about absentee black fathers, poor education and urban crime.

Ironically, in Wisconsin just three weeks ago, Milwaukee police Chief Edward Flynn was being criticized for inappropriate and disrespectful behavior. Flynn, during a police commission meeting related to an officer-involved shooting, was on his cell phone. Didn't he appreciate the gravity of this hearing? Later, at a press conference, he was asked why he was rude.

The chief said: "Well, I was on my phone, yes. That is true. I was following developments with a 5-year-old girl sitting on her dad's lap who just got shot in the head by a drive-by shooting. If some of the people gave a good goddamn about the victimization of people in this community by crime, I'd take some of their invective more seriously.

"The greatest racial disparity in the city of Milwaukee is getting shot and killed -- hello! Eighty percent of my homicide victims -- every year -- are African-American; 80 percent of our aggravated assault victims are African-American; 80 percent of our shooting victims who survive their shooting are African-American.

"Now, they know all about the last three people who have been killed by the Milwaukee Police Department over the course of the last several years. There's not one of them that can name one of the last three homicide victims we've had in this city. ... But this community is at risk all right, and it's not because men and women in blue risk their lives protecting it. It's at risk because we have large numbers of high-capacity, quality firearms in the hands of remorseless criminals who don't care who they shoot.

"Now I'm leaving here to go to that scene. I take it personally, OK? We're going up there, and there's a bunch of cops processing a scene of a dead kid. And they're the ones that are going to be out there patrolling and stopping suspects that may have guns under the front seat. They're the ones that are gonna take risks to their lives to try to clean this thing up, all right?

"We are responsible for the things we get wrong, and we take action. We've arrested cops, we've fired cops and so on. But the fact is, the people out here, some of them -- who had the most to say -- are absolutely MIA when it comes to the true threats facing this community. It gets a little tiresome, and when you start getting yelled at for reading the updates of the kid who got shot, yeah, you take it personally, OK?"

Meanwhile, in an exchange with black MSNBC pundit Michael Eric Dyson, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani called the Ferguson killing a rarity. He argued that the "heavy policing" in black areas results from the need to address black crime: "I find it very disappointing that you're not discussing the fact that 93 percent of blacks in America are killed by other blacks. We're talking about the exception. ... I would like to see the attention paid to that, that you are paying to (Ferguson). ... It is the reason for the heavy police presence in the black community. ... The white police officers won't be there if you weren't killing each other."

Dyson's response? "This is a defensive mechanism of white supremacy at work in your mind." Well, at least we're "keeping the discussion going."

About 25 Ferguson businesses were burned Monday night, most of them minority-owned. They were started in the face of the real problems facing blacks in America — rising illegitimacy, crime, poverty and lack of education, and a war on poverty that succeeded only in destroying the black family as it subsidized a culture of dependency on government.

Dubose refused to be a victim of crime or culture and still refuses, even as those from President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder to Jesse Jackson and Sharpton seek to stoke the flames of racial division and the culture of victimhood.

The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994 and is about 8 percent today. The black illegitimacy rate is 75 percent, and in some cities, it's 90 percent. But if that's a legacy of slavery, it must have skipped several generations, because in the 1940s, unwed births hovered around 14 percent.

The Reverend Bill Owens, founder and president of the Coalition of African American Pastors, said the attack on Christian pastors by the openly gay mayor of Houston, who subpoenaed their sermons and other communications after they opposed a city ordinance that allows transgender people to use any public restroom, signals the need for “the next civil rights movement.”

Owens, speaking from Houston, told CNSNews.com that he and other pastors in his coalition held a press conference on Tuesday to support the Houston pastors and express their concern about this threat to religious liberty.

PunditFact Lies Again By Larry Elder

PunditFact strikes again. For the second time.

PunditFact is a so-called truth-seeking column by the Tampa Bay Times. Its website describes the feature as "dedicated to checking the accuracy of claims by pundits, columnists, bloggers, political analysts, the hosts and guests of talk shows."

President Barack Obama, for example, recently made the following patently wrongheaded claim: "The states that have raised the minimum wage have had faster job growth than the states that haven't raised the minimum wage." This claim implies a causal connection between raising the minimum wage and prosperity. Minimum-wage hikes do not provoke growth. Indeed, the reverse is true. Yet PunditFact's sister site, PolitiFact, gave Obama a generous "half true."

What did I say that got me fact-checked?

On CNN, I said, "If black America were a country, it would be the 15th wealthiest in the world." PunditFact rated the statement "false." Not even "mostly false" or "half true"?

PunditFact said: "In 2011, the report (Elder) provided us, Target Market Newsput the income spent by African-Americans at $836 billion. Elder got his talking point by comparing that figure to the World Bank's list of each country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced. In 2011, 'black America's' $836 billion would have put it in 16th, above Indonesia and below South Korea."

So Elder said 15th and it's really 16th -- close enough, right? Well, no.

PunditFact, you see, says that I failed to look at "purchasing power parity." They divided blacks' $1 trillion earned income by 44.5 million (every black man, woman and child in America) and applied a "conversion factor called purchasing power parity to account for the different values of goods and services in different countries." Then they compared that to a list of countries ranked by GDP per capita, and voila! PunditFact says black America falls to 44th -- between Portugal and Lithuania. "Purchasing power parity?"

Newspapers, newscasters and business publications routinely do stories about China eclipsing America as the world's "largest" or "biggest" or "richest" or "wealthiest" country -- with no mention of purchasing power parity. For example:

Fox News, April 30, 2014: "And setting the stage for a new economic superpower to replace us -- get this -- by the end of the year ... China."

Time magazine headline, April 30, 2014: "China Poised to Pass U.S. as World's Leading Economic Power This Year"

Financial Times headline, April 30, 2014: "China Could Overtake the U.S. as the World's No. 1 Economy This Year"

CBS Evening News, Oct. 9, 2014: "(Today) came the news that China has surpassed the United States as the largest economy in the world."

The New York Times' headline in 2010: "China Passes Japan as Second-Largest Economy." The second paragraph read: "The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China's ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower." Despite the headline, we don't read anything about China's per capita income until the 9th paragraph, and nothing on purchasing power parity.

Since PunditFact kicks me for not using purchasing power parity, surely PunditFact's parent, Tampa Times, follows its own advice when writing about the size of a country's economy? Wrong.

A Tampa Times' 2012 story headlined "With Slow Growth, China Can't Prop Up the World Economy" called China "the world's second-largest economy," with not one word about per capita GDP or purchasing power parity. It also reprinted articles from other papers that discuss a country's gross GDP with no reference to purchasing power parity or per capita income.

This is my second bogus fact-check.

Several months ago on CNN's Crossfire I said, "In 1900, at all three levels of government -- federal, state and local -- government took less than 10 percent of the American people's money." PunditFact found no problem there.

Second, I said that when you take all three levels of government -- federal, state and local -- today government takes "about 35 percent." PunditFact calculated total government expenditures at 32.6 percent of GDP, and at 38.5 percent of personal income. Again, no problem there.

But then I said, "Add a dollar value to mandates" issued from Washington, DC, on the various states, "you're talking almost 50 percent" of our income. PunditFact said "the exact cost is hard to pin down" since it's difficult to assign a "cost" to a mandate. True, but this doesn't mean mandates are without cost or that we can't make an attempt to determine that cost. I asked UCLA economics Professor Lee Ohanian about my "controversial" assertion. He said, "If anything, youunderstated the amount government takes." And PunditFact even conceded, "Elder's figures certainly are eye-popping, and his general point -- that the government consumes a lot more money than it did more than 100 years ago -- is true."

Therefore, as with Obama, did PunditFact give at least partial credit for the "true" claims about how much government took in 1900 and the amount it takes today? Nope. PunditFact gave me "mostly false."

For its blatant bias and unfairness, let's rate PunditFact "mostly useless."

A member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights told President Obama Monday that the administration’s reported plan to grant work permits to millions of illegal immigrants of illegal immigrants would have a harmful effect on black American workers.

Peter Kirsanow, a Republican appointee to the panel, said in a letter to the president and to the Congressional Black Caucus that issuing millions of work permits to potentially low-wage workers “will devastate the black community.”

Alan Caruba: Victim Mentality Afflicts Black Americans

Well, we now have another black riot to put in the books. This one, like the others, involve the death of a black American by a white police officer, but buried in the stories about the Ferguson, Missouri riot is the fact that there was an altercation between Michael Brown and the officer who shot him after having sustained an injury.

The response of some members of the black community in Ferguson was to vandalize and loot stores on Sunday night victimizing the owners of those stores, some of whom avoided it by standing fully armed in front of their place of business. Since then the rioting has continued through Wednesday, inflamed by the predictable presence of Al Sharpton who is famed for getting on the first plane available to get to the scene of riots and similar incidents.

Keeping blacks convinced of their victimization has a long history and was even commented upon by Booker T. Washington (April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915) who, as far back as 1895, called for avoiding confrontations over segregation by putting more reliance on long-term educational and economic advancement in the black community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. expanded on this theme by advocating non-violent protest during the 1950s that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

There is no question that blacks in America have had a very sorry history of slavery, segregation, and lynchings, but that was then and this is now. Fifty years past the Civil Rights Act, however, there should be no riots the likes of Ferguson.

Police officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect us have a right to self defense.

Recently, a fellow blogger cited a few of the riots since the days of civil rights protests. In 1989 there was the Overton riot in Miami, Florida, in reaction to the shooting of a black motorcyclist by a Hispanic police officer in that predominantly black community. In 1992, there were the Los Angeles riots in reaction to the acquittal of LAPD officers involved in the videotaped beating of Rodney King.

In 1996 there was a riot in St. Petersburg after a police officer stopped 18 year old Tyron Lewis for speeding and his car lurched forward toward the officer. In 2001 there was a riot in Cincinnati in reaction to the acquittal of Steven Roach after the fatal shooting of an unarmed young black male, Timothy Thomas, during a foot pursuit. And in 2009 there was a riot in Oakland, California, after another fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, Oscar Grant, by a BART transit policeman.

All of these riots have in common the shooting of a black man by a white or Hispanic officer, presumably in fear for his life, with the exception of the response to the Rodney King beating following a high speed car chase.

Lost amidst these events is the fact that black men are more likely to be murdered by other black men, fully 94 percent of such deaths, despite the fact that blacks are 13 percent of the population. They account for more than 50 percent of homicide victims in America, some 7,000 annually.

Commentator, Juan Williams, in his book "Enough," wrote "Very few leading black voices in the pulpit or on the political stage are focused on having black people take personal responsibility for the exorbitant amount of crime committed by black people against other black people. Today's black leaders sing like a choir when they raise their voices against police brutality and the increasing number of black people in jail...but any mention of black American's responsibility for committing the crimes, big and small, that lead so many to prison is barely mumbled if mentioned at all."

That puts the latest riots in Ferguson in perspective and is an indictment of men like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and others who have profited from keeping blacks in a mental state of victimization when the real problem of too many in the black community is rooted in a culture of violence and criminality. The statistics do not lie.

Whites who witness such riots since the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and Voting Rights Act in 1965 can be forgiven for concluding that too many in America's black community have not taken advantage of the rights those laws represent. The good news, generally ignored, is the way many black Americans have focused on the benefits of education and have moved into the middle and upper classes of our population.

These riots do nothing to advance the black community and no doubt are an embarrassment that, regrettably, have occurred too often in the years since America took dramatic steps to reverse the discrimination of the past.

"Sheriff Milwaukee County: 'Liberal Policies Have Destroyed the Black Family'" --An awakening?

 The latest attempt by liberals to help black people is underway in our K-12 urban public schools.

 These do-gooders are now defining down socially acceptable behavior for black students in school. Bad behavior is being excused and attempts to hold black kids accountable by enforcing codes of conduct are called racist.

 Having a sense of discipline has always been considered a virtue, a redeeming quality, but now its roots are claimed to lie in racism.

 White liberal elites have chimed in about school codes of conduct.

 The Capital Times newspaper of Madison, Wis., recently chronicled bad behavior by black students in its public schools. In the story, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that racial discrimination in school discipline codes “is a real problem today.”

 The white superintendent of the Madison public schools believes that “we need to address head-on our racial bias and the assumptions we make of students who are in the classroom.”

 Really? Where I come from, bad behavior has always been unacceptable and is codified not by race but by societal norms to keep chaos from reigning.

 These watered-down student codes of conduct sweeping across urban public school systems will not help black parents, kids or communities. Like every other display of liberal empathy, they will have a reverse effect, and it will not be positive.

 All anti-social behavior and social pathology is normalized, and to disagree is racial stereotyping.

 What these race provocateurs do not want to admit is the reason we are seeing more disruptive behavior in schools is because of poor and ineffective parenting, manifested by liberal policies.

 There is a government program today for everything in the black community that used to be the responsibility of the individual, such as parenting. Because of this system, many parents have abdicated what is their most important responsibility and turned it over to the government.

 Uncle Sam is now raising their kids.

 We take kids out of the home with early childhood education programs, and the government feeds them breakfast, lunch and dinner, and provides after-school programs.

 Who needs parents in the black community anymore?

 It is a sad reality that more and more parents have turned over their duty to raise their kids to federal and state government programs.

 As a result, large numbers of black kids arrive ill-prepared for a social setting such as a school. They simply do not enter a classroom in a state of readiness to learn.

 These kids suffer from a lot of emotional baggage spawned by ineffective parenting, which is worsened by white bleeding-heart liberals who use these troubled kids for their liberal agenda. Social liberalism is a sadistic ideology.

 White liberal social policies have become the new racism in America.

 According to liberal orthodoxy, no one is accountable anymore — except for conservatives, of course. Conservatives get blamed for all the failed liberal initiatives that were designed to help black folks.

 Notice how Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin received the dreaded R-word clubbing by the left when he pointed out in his 50-year review report how the failed anti-poverty initiatives started by liberals to help blacks have instead made their lives worse.

 Every attempt liberals have made to help black people, with their reliance on government-centered public-policy ideas, has worsened their lot in life.

 I write this letter directly to you. No one else received copies.

 Your power in America, and especially in the black community, is substantial.

 I honestly, and sincerely, urge you to rethink your positions on several issues.

 I have, so far, kept this letter private. I hope that after you read this letter, you will agree to have a one-on-one, sit-down, private conversation with me about the future and direction of black America.

 But given the stakes, our personal feelings towards each other are inconsequential. I reach out in good faith, based on my sincere concern for the black community. I see an erosion of community standards, values, hopes and aspirations.

 By the way, despite my acknowledged harsh criticisms of you, I never once attacked you personally. I said, on many occasions: I don’t question her heart, but I question her head. I called you a hardworking, tireless warrior for your views.

 I’m not grandstanding, not doing this for ratings. Again, at least, until I hear from you, I am reaching out. I hope to hear from you soon.

 I recently received an invitation to an event at a private residence to celebrate the election of Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn.

 Frankly, the invitation surprised me, given my harsh criticism of the then-candidate Hahn’s position on several issues. Nevertheless, I accepted, only to receive a phone call, dis-inviting me. I understand that the host received pressure from you, among others, that I be barred from the event.

 Again, as I said, the invitation surprised me, and I don’t blame you or others for not wanting me there. After all, this presumably celebrated your hard work in getting Hahn elected.

 I hoped, by accepting, to finally talk with you and other black "leaders" about problems in the black community. My producer called your office on several occasions to get you on my show, but each time you refused. Recently, a caller to my show said that she called your office in hopes that she might convince you to appear on the show. She said your office told her that "you had never heard of Larry Elder." Again, I think I understand the tactic—the tactic of ignoring me, in hopes to minimize that you perceive what I suspect you perceive as a growing influence. Again, I understand.

 I write this letter, however, to issue a call. Your position on major issues affecting the black community is simply, and flat out, wrong. Not only do your positions fail to advance the interests of blacks, but also, in many cases, they actually hurt them. Let’s go over them.

 Gun Control

 You, the NAACP, and the majority of the "black leadership" routinely call for more gun control legislation. Powerful evidence, however, indicates that restrictive gun laws do nothing to deter bad guys, while making it more and more difficult for good people to defend themselves. Violent crime rates have fallen faster and further, for the most part, in the thirty-two states allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons, vs. non-carry states. Japan and England now see crime rates increasing, despite bans on private ownership of guns.

 Washington, D.C., a city with perhaps the nation’s most restrictive gun laws, ranks No. 1 in per capita murders. As former D.C. mayor Marion Barry once incredibly put it, "Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest rates in the country."

 Crime in America remains disproportionately an urban affair. Therefore, those who most need protection from bad guys remain—due in large measure to your policies—most vulnerable to crime.

 Affirmative Action

 In America in Black and White, Stephen and Abigail Thernstrom clearly show that the black middle class preceded affirmative action. Moreover, it insults the hardworking black men and women of this country who, since slavery, built the black middle class, day by day, brick by brick, backache by backache. The first black member of the Federal Reserve Board, Arthur Brimmer, studied affirmative action’s impact. By affirmative action, I mean preferences, the lowering of standards to achieve "diversity" or "multi-culturalism" or "inclusion." I do not include outreach, or using efforts to inform others, irrespective of race, gender, etc., of available opportunities.

 Brimmer concluded, "I would say that most blacks I know did not get [their jobs] because of affirmative action, but it’s impossible [to determine the exact number]."

 In 1962, Ebony magazine ran a series of motivational articles called, "If I Were Young Today." Each month, they asked a black achiever—Federal District Judge Herman Moore, union leader A. Philip Randolph, famed Los Angeles architect Paul Williams—to provide advice to today’s youth. Each spoke of drive, vision, hard work, and preparation. Not one even implied the need or desire for preferential treatment.

 In 1963, Whitney Young, then head of the Urban League, proposed a kind of a "Marshall Plan" for blacks. A member of the league, however, objected to what he called "the heart of it--the business of employing Negroes [because they are Negroes]." Moreover, Whitney Young suggested his "Marshall Plan" for a period of ten years. This means, if Young prevailed, affirmative action would have ended in 1973!

 The Detroit News recently wrote that, at seven Michigan colleges and universities, blacks within six years graduate at a rate of 40% compared to 61% for whites and 74% for Asians. Blame lowered standards to achieve to achieve campus "diversity." This mismatching of students—placing someone in a major league school when he or she would have been better at Triple A ball—causes, according to one study a loss of $5 billion a year to the black community. Moreover, affirmative action, in the educational field, masked the real problems, substandard education K-12. Yet you, the Democratic Party, and the unions all resist many changes urban parents want, including vouchers.

 Besides, hard work wins. Back in 1901, thirty-six years after slavery, Booker T. Washington said, "When a Negro girl learns to cook, to wash dishes, to sew, to write a book, or a Negro boy learns to groom horses, or to grow sweet potatoes, or to produce butter, or to build a house, or to be able to practise medicine, as well or better than some one else, they will be rewarded regardless of race or colour. In the long run, the world is going to have the best, and any difference in race, religion, or previous history will not long keep the world from what it wants.

 "I think that the whole future of my race hinges on the question as to whether or not it can make itself of such indispensable value that the people in the town and the state where we reside will feel that our presence is necessary to the happiness and well-being of the community. No man who continues to add something to the material, intellectual, and moral well being of the place in which he lives is long left without proper reward. This is a great human law which cannot be permanently nullified."

 Welfare

 You fight any attempt to roll back the welfare state, and voted against the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. This act caused a 50% reduction in the welfare rolls, without a corresponding increase in abortion. It reduced teen pregnancy, without a corresponding increase in abortion.

 Census records from 100 years ago found blacks, in some cases, more likely than whites to marry and have children within a traditional family structure. As recently as 1960, 22% of black children were born to unwed parents. Today, the figure stands at 70%, with 85% spending at least some time living without a father in the house, at least for part of their lives. Racism? Blame Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty, coupled with a "you-owe-me" victicrat mindset that creates dependency and fosters irresponsibility.

 In 1985, the Los Angeles Times polled poor people and asked conducted a poll, asking poor people whether poor young women "often," or "seldom," have children in order to get on welfare. More poor people (64 percent) than non-poor (44 percent) agreed that welfare recipients "often" have children to get additional benefits. More poor people than non-poor people agreed that welfare fosters dependency.

 War on Drugs

 You recently condemned the CIA for its alleged role in the creation of urban America’s drug problem, bellowing at a Town Hall meeting: "If I never do anything else in this career as a member of Congress--I’m gonna make somebody pay for what they’ve done to my community and to my people."

 Never mind that the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times all wrote stories debunking the notion that the CIA had played anything other than an incidental role in the creation of a drug war.

 Furthermore, what about personal responsibility? Did some strange mystical racist force cause black people to ingest or inject drugs?

 Many young blacks, convicted of drug-related offenses, waste away in jail.

 Many never committed violent crimes. Yet, you do not call for the end of the War on Drugs.
You claim you condemn drugs, but you wrote a letter to Janet Reno to back off of a joint federal joint Justice Department local DEA probe. The probe centered on James A. Prince, a childhood friend of your husband’s. The authorities suspected him of drug trafficking, and some DEA agents working on the probe suddenly got yanked off. Some, on the record, accused you of interfering with a legitimate probe. For all these reasons, I suspect that you question the legitimacy of the government’s War on Drugs. Why not, then, publicly call for an end to this expensive, unfair, corrupting War on Drugs?

 In 1979, former Black Panther, Joanne Chesimard, gunned down a New Jersey State Highway Patrol Officer. A jury convicted her of murder, and sentenced her to life in prison. In a daring breakout, Chesimard escaped from prison and fled to Cuba. Congress passed a unanimous resolution urging Castro to send Chesimard back to America and face charges. You, however, wrote Castro a letter, urging him to let her stay, stating "she was persecuted as a result of her political beliefs and affiliations." You further likened her to Martin Luther King!

 The War on Drugs requires a growing use of informants, thus compromising the integrity of our criminal justice system. Under the guise of fighting the War on Drugs, President Clinton authorized more wiretaps and asset forfeitures than under the Bush and Reagan administrations combined. Economist Milton Friedman said, "Today in this country, we incarcerate 3,109 black men for every 100,000 of them in the population. Just to give you an idea of the drama in this number, our closest competitor for incarcerating black men is South Africa. South Africa—and this is pre-Nelson Mandela and under an overt public policy of apartheid—incarcerated 729 black men for every 100,000."

 Janet Reno estimates that nearly half of all street crime is directly related to criminals seeking money to support drug habits. I urge you to take a courageous stand and publicly pressure the government to end this war.

 Racism

 Black leaders refuse to acknowledge the good news: Racism no longer remains a potent threat in American life. Most blacks remain solidly middle class, with blacks forming businesses at a faster rate than whites. The black domestic product, were it a separate country, makes it one of the fifteen wealthiest nations in the world.

 Harvard’s Orlando Patterson, a liberal Democrat, said, "The sociological truths are that America, while still flawed in its race relations…is now the least racist white-majority society in the world; has a better record of legal protection of minorities than any other society, white or black; offers more opportunities to a greater number of black persons than any other society, including all those of Africa…"
In one recent year, three out of four blacks, with SAT scores between 1250 and 1300 received admissions into the nation’s 28 most elite colleges. Only one in four whites with comparable SAT scores received admission.

 SAG, the Screen Actors Guild, reports roles going to blacks equal the percentage of our population in the nation. Unemployment rates for married black men just about equal those for married white men.
Yes, black net worth remains but a fraction of white net worth, but government programs cannot close that gap without forcibly taking money away from somebody and giving it to someone else. Instead, hard work, personal responsibility, avoiding slovenly behavior, getting an education, and focus create growth and opportunity. You display precisely these qualities in your life and career, and form the basis for your success.

 As mentioned before, 70% of today’s black children are born outside of wedlock. Nearly 25% of young black men possess criminal records. In many urban schools, the dropout rate exceeds 50%. Because of these problems, there are only 100 eligible, marriageable black men for every 111 eligible, marriageable black women. Nearly three-quarters of inner-city kids at the elementary school level fail to read, write, and compute at grade level.

 In America, we see two black Americas. The majority black world reflects increased prosperity, growing homeownership, and steady asset accumulation. The other, the so-called black underclass, remains disturbing. Quite simply, we see too many children having children. It stands, far and away, as America’s No. 1 problem. Whatever role racism played, the complete abolition of white racism would leave these problems unresolved.
