Fox's Wallace Challenges Santorum: If Pope Shouldn't Talk Science Why Should You?

After Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum said Pope Francis should "leave science to the scientists" last week, "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace challenged: If the Pope shouldn't talk about science, why should Santorum?

"The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science," Santorum had said in a previous interview. "I think we are probably better off leaving science to the scientists and focusing on what we're really good at."

"Two points, if he's not a scientist, and, in fact, he does have a degree in chemistry — neither are you," Wallace said.

"I agree," said Santorum.

"And the second point is that ... 80-90 percent of scientists that have studied this say that humans, human activity contributes to climate change," said Wallace. "I guess the question would be, if he shouldn't talk about it, should you?"

Rick Santorum Says Pope Francis 'Not Credible' On Topic Of Climate Change

GOP presidential candidate and devout Catholic Rick Santorum has called out his faith's leader for voicing his concerns about global climate change.

Speaking to a radio station in Philadelphia, the former U.S. Senator said that while he loves Pope Francis and is a "huge fan of his," the Catholic Church is not qualified to speak about climate change, and if the pontiff issues an encyclical on the topic it could hurt his credibility.

The Vatican Thursday took the unusual step of announcing the release date in advance of its environmental cyclical "to avoid confusion over the diffusion of unconfirmed information."

During his interview with Philadelphia's WPHT 1210 host, Dom Giordano, Santorum said, "The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science, and I think we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists, and focus on what we're really good at, which is theology and morality."

He added: "And I think when we get involved with political and controversial scientific theories, then I think the Church is probably not as forceful and credible."

No papal document in recent times has elicited quite as much anticipation. The Vatican has helped fuel interest by mounting an unprecedented roll-out including conferences, speeches and book launches tied to it.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum launched a new presidential bid in Butler County last week, hoping to recapture the grassroots support he enjoyed during his 2012 campaign. But many of those who rallied to his cause three years ago have been backing him ever since — whether they’ve known it or not.

According to campaign-finance records, in just over two years, Mr. Santorum’s 2012 election committee earned nearly $281,000 by lending out contact information for his supporters. The money was paid by “data brokers” who repackage such information for other politicians and causes.

“Lots of campaigns do that,” said John Brabender, a longtime political strategist for Mr. Santorum.

“A lot of the folks that ran in 2012, their lists are on the market,” agreed Ryan Meerstein, senior director for Client Strategy for Targeted Victory, a Virginia-based Republican technology firm. In January, the company paid more than $1.1 million to rent list information from Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

“ISIS wants to establish a 7th century caliphate. They want to behead, crucify, burn, torture and slave. In response, the Obama-Clinton foreign policy team refuses not only to acknowledge it, but they insist that the greatest threat to American security is global climate change.

Ladies and gentleman, we don’t need weatherman-in-chief we need a commander-in-chief to run this country. (Applause) And, yes, we need to do airstrikes, not five or ten a day, not a public relations stunt that the president is doing today. We need to take serious destroying ISIS. We need to hit ISIS to defeat them. If ISIS wants to establish a 7th century caliphate, well let’s oblige them by bombing them back to the 7th century!”

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said Republicans need to support a minimum wage so as to not alienate working-class voters.

Santorum, who recently came out for increasing the national minimum wage, said he supported a smaller increase than the $10.10 an hour that President Obama has proposed. "More in the range of a dollar," he said, adding that Republicans can't be labeled as the party that always opposes raising it.

"I think it does," he told CNN's Candy Crowley when asked if he thought opposing a minimum wage hurt the party with blue-collar voters.

"You don't see too many Republicans arguing against a minimum wage. A few have, but I don't think too many do. So, if you're going to have a minimum wage, I think you just have to be reasonable about it and offer an alternative. In the past, Republicans have offered alternatives to minimum wage increases, and most of them are the ones that have been successful," he said.

Santorum said he's "looking at it" when asked about a 2016 presidential run.
