First Lady Notes Personal Struggles In Chicago Graduation

Christian K. Lee / AP
By Sophia Tareen, Jun. 9, 2015, Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama drew on her hometown connections and personal struggles from college and the White House Tuesday during a Chicago high school graduation speech to the classmates of an honor student gunned down in 2013 near the Obama family home.

A boisterous crowd of thousands attended the commencement ceremony for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School, a school that garnered headlines when teenager Hadiya Pendleton was fatally shot on the way home from class. Days earlier she had been in Washington, D.C., to perform with her drill team during President Barack Obama's second term inauguration festivities.

Pendleton would have graduated Tuesday. A chair — draped in purple fabric, her favorite color; a feather boa; and a bouquet of flowers — was reserved in her honor among her cap-and-gown-clad classmates. Her family was presented with an engraved class ring.

Michelle Obama Complains About Comments From Fox News, Michelle Malkin, Rudy Giuliani And Rush Limbaugh

Source: Tuskegee University
By Charles Spiering, May 11, 2015, Breitbart.com

With less than two years left in the White House, Michelle Obama is taking time to respond to her critics, accusing them of treating her differently because she is the first African-American First Lady.

She made her remarks during a commencement speech at Tuskegee University over the weekend, comparing her experience as the wife of the first African-American president to the experiences of historical civil-rights leaders.

The First Lady recalled her experience on the campaign trail, accusing the media of giving her unique attention thanks to the “fears and misperceptions of others” who questioned whether she was “too loud, or too angry, or too emasculating.”

She alluded to Fox News personalities discussing her “terrorist fist jab” and referring to her on-screen as “Obama’s baby mama” as well as Rush Limbaugh suggesting that she had“a little bit of uppityism” thanks to her nanny state food polices.

Michelle Obama speaks of emotional toll of being first black first lady

Screen grab via TheHill.com
By Elise Vielbeck, May 10, 2015, TheHill.com

Michelle Obama gave a candid view Saturday of the challenges and emotional toll of being the country’s first black first lady.

Obama, speaking to graduates at Tuskegee University in Alabama, described insensitive media questions and derogatory remarks from political pundits that she said have kept her up at night.

“You might remember the on-stage celebratory fist bump between me and my husband after a primary win that was referred to as a ‘terrorist fist jab,’ ” she said.

“And over the years, folks have used plenty of interesting words to describe me. One said I exhibited ‘a little bit of uppity-ism.’ Another noted that I was one of my husband’s ‘cronies of color.’ Cable news once charmingly referred to me as ‘Obama’s Baby Mama.’ ”

Obama said she was subjected to a different set of expectations on the campaign trail in 2008 compared with other candidates’ wives.

“ ‘What kind of First Lady would I be? What kinds of issues would I take on?’ … The truth is, those same questions would have been posed to any candidate’s spouse,” she said.

“But, as potentially the first African-American First Lady, I was also the focus of another set of questions and speculations; conversations sometimes rooted in the fears and misperceptions of others. Was I too loud, or too angry, or too emasculating? Or was I too soft, too much of a mom, not enough of a career woman?”

Michelle Obama Lets Loose On Race in Graduation Speech

First Lady Michelle Obama isn't holding back.

During a commencement speech at Tuskegee University on Saturday, Obama spoke frankly about the role her racial identity played during the 2008 presidential campaign.

"As potentially the first African-American first lady, I was also the focus of another set of questions and speculations, conversations sometimes rooted in the fears and misperceptions of others," she told the class of 2015. "Was I too loud or too emasculating? Or was I too soft? Too much of a mom and not enough of a career woman?"

Michelle Obama: Blacks Have Been 'Frustrated And Invisible' For 'Decades'

Source:  Yahoo.com
By Zack Colman, May 9, 2015, Washington Examiner

First Lady Michelle Obama urged students at Tuskegee University, a historically black university in Alabama, to remain involved in civic life during a time of tension regarding race relations across the country.

At the school's commencement address, the First Lady listed scenarios in which African-Americans feel they encounter systemic discrimination, such as "nagging worries that you're going to get stopped or pulled over for absolutely no reason." She said those feelings are "real," but disengaging is not an option.

"I want to be very clear that those feelings are not an excuse to just throw up our hands and give up. Not an excuse. They are not an excuse to lose hope. To succumb to feelings of despair and anger only means that in the end, we lose," Obama said.

The comments come a week after violent riots brought Baltimore to a halt following the arrest and death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a black man who died as a result of injuries sustained during his apprehension. Maryland State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has charged all six Baltimore Police Department officers involved in Gray's arrest for offenses including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.

Michelle Obama--Vote And Then Celebrate By Eating Chicken

By Derek Hunter, Nov. 4, 2014, Dailycaller.com

First lady Michelle Obama has a message to black voters: Don’t worry about what candidates have done or said– just vote for the Democrats.

On TV One, a network operating under the motto “Where Black Life Unfolds,” the first lady told “News One Daily” host Roland Martin, “And that’s my message to voters, this isn’t about Barack, it’s not about person on that ballot– its about you. And for most of the people we are talking to, a Democratic ticket is the clear ticket that we should be voting on, regardless of who said what or did this– that shouldn’t even come into the equation.”

In the full audio of the interview, Michelle Obama gives everyone who votes permission to eat fried chicken.

Why Is 1st Lady Scarce In Campaign? Her Last Name Is Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama
By Jackie Calmes, Oct. 3, 2014, Nytimes.com

MILWAUKEE — She can rouse a crowd as she did here this week, connect with women and drive turnout among African-American voters. Yet despite the nail-biting closeness of state contests to decide which party will control the Senate,Michelle Obama has been largely absent from the campaign trail so far.

She has her reasons, Democrats say: Mrs. Obama hates to be away from her daughters. She loathes Washington’s toxic politics. She resents Republicans for their opposition to her husband’s agenda. But she also believes some Senate Democrats have been insufficiently supportive of her own efforts to end childhood obesity.

This month, though, Mrs. Obama is emerging to rally voters, mostly, it seems, on behalf of candidates for governor. On Friday, she was in Maine and Massachusetts for rallies, and later she will return to Wisconsin for another voter-mobilization event like the one she led here on Monday.

But unlike Hillary Rodham Clinton, who as first lady crisscrossed the country for Democrats in 1998, visiting about 20 states, Mrs. Obama will keep to a fairly limited path. In a measure of how deeply unpopular her husband is in Republican-leaning battleground states, Democratic Senate candidates there worry that Mrs. Obama’s presence would tie them too closely to the president they are trying to distance themselves from, just as undecided voters are making up their minds.

Michelle O: U.S. Has Improved 'By Almost Every Economic Measure'

First Lady Michelle Obama

By Warren Todd Huston, Oct. 3, 2014, Breitbart.com

In a speech in Boston, First Lady Michelle Obama left behind talk of exercise and school lunches, exchanging it all for bald politics by claiming that under her husband the US economy is now better off "by almost every economic measure."

The First Lady appeared at the Strand Theater Friday to stump for Martha Coakley's campaign for Governor of Massachusetts. Coakley needs help badly, as even in blue, blue Massachusetts, the race between Democrat Coakley and Republican Charlie Baker is essentially a toss up.

In her remarks, Obama pushed the President's newest campaign line that he has saved the economy based on reports that unemployment is at an all-time low since he took office—as well as his purported "longest streak" of jobs created.

"We were in full-blown crisis mode," Obama told her appreciative audience. "Our economy was literally on the brink of collapse: Wall Street banks were folding; businesses were losing 800,000 jobs a month--800,000 jobs a month; folks on TV--all the pundits were panicking about whether we were headed for another Great Depression. And that wasn’t just talk, that was actually a real possibility."

Michelle Obama: Americans May Take For Granted Barack's Positive Impact

First Lady Michelle Obama
By Andrew Kirell, Sept. 20th, 2014, Mediaite.com

During a speech in Washington, D.C., this week, First Lady Michelle Obama wholeheartedly defended her husband’s record as president, asserting that younger Americans may take for granted the positive impact he has had on the country.

Speaking before the Women’s Leadership Fund Conference, Obama said her husband first entered office when the United States was on the brink of a “Depression.” Six years later, she said, “overall unemployment is the lowest it’s been” and the president’s policies have “cut our deficit by more than half.”

She also noted the cultural changes that have happened since her husband took office. “[J]ust think about how different our country looks to children growing up today,” she said. “Think about how our kids take for granted that a black person or a woman can be President of the United States. They take it for granted that for the first time in history, there are three brilliant women serving on our Supreme Court. They take for granted that their president will end hurtful policies like ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ they’ll speak out for gay marriage.”

Michelle O: USA Has Not Achieved 'Anywhere Near Full' Equality

First Lady Michelle Obama
Jeryl Bier, Aug. 4, 2014, Weeklystandard.com

First Lady Michelle Obama created buzz with her remark at the recent Summit of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders that "the blood of Africa runs through my veins." But later in her speech, she had some observations about the country of her birth as well. Mrs. Obama cited the progress made by and for women in the United States, particularly over the last century:

A century ago, women in America weren’t allowed to vote. Decades ago, it was perfectly legal for employers to refuse to hire women. Domestic violence was viewed not as a crime, but as a private family matter between a man and his wife.

But in each generation, people of conscience stood up and rejected these unjust practices. They chained themselves to the White House gates, waged hunger strikes in prison to win the right to vote. They took their bosses to court. They spoke out about rape and fought to prosecute rapists, despite the stigma and shame. They left their abusive husbands, even when that meant winding up on the streets with their children. (Applause.)

Michelle Obama: In '14, We Need You 'Passionate And Hungry'

By Edward-Isacc Dovere, Jul. 27, 2014, Politico.com

In a new video recorded for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, first lady Michelle Obama says Democrats need to take this year’s midterms more seriously than they did either of her husband’s presidential elections.

The video, her first effort on behalf of Democrats beyond a few scattered fundraisers so far, launches the DCCC’s 1millionvotesfor2014.com website, timed to coincide with the 100-day countdown until the elections.

By Lenny Bernstein, Jun. 18, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

First lady Michelle Obama vowed again Wednesday to fight attempts to delay enforcement of school lunch nutrition standards, expressing surprise and regret at proposals in Congress that would allow some school districts to seek waivers from requirements that they offer more healthful fare.

“I find myself surprised that we’re here,” Obama told a handful of health and medical reporters in her office, “because just a few years ago, everybody was around the table celebrating this victory, that school nutrition standards had been improved for the first time in 30 years. And everyone was on board.”

“Of course it’s hard” to wean students off pizza, French fries and other high-fat, high-sodium foods that had been staples of school lunches before passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010, she added. “We expected those challenges, particularly among our oldest kids, who’ve grown up eating junk food. But what we did not expect was for the grown-ups to…go along with them and say ‘well this is too hard, it costs too much money. So let’s just stop’.”

Last month, the House Appropriations Committee voted to allow school districts to temporarily opt out of school dietary requirements. Some school districts have complained that requiring whole wheat products and fruits and vegetables, in the name of reducing obesity among children and teens, has prompted older students to shun school lunches and breakfasts and is costing the districts money. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture to give waivers to any school district whose lunch programs saw a net loss over six months.
