WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cities across the United States are seeking ways to head off the kind of violence seen in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend when white nationalists and neo-Nazis clashed with counter-protesters over the planned removal of a Civil War-era statue.

As they step up efforts to pull such monuments from public spaces and brace for a right-wing backlash, municipalities are re-evaluating their approaches to crowd control, permits, weapon regulation and intelligence gathering.

Victor Davis Hanson: Offenders of the Western Faith

Davis Hanson, Jan. 15, 2015, Townhall

So far Obama has remained mum about the remarkable Cairo speech of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who called on imams and Islamic clerics to speak out against terrorist violence in their midst and to inculcate greater tolerance among Muslims. In Obama's own 2009 Cairo speech, he invited the illiberal Muslim Brotherhood to attend in order to hear mostly half-true claims about the historical glories of Islam, while Obama cited Western colonialism, globalization and the Cold War as understandable incitements to Muslims.

Dave Sheinin and Krissah Thompson, Nov. 9, 2014, Washington Post

This season, the National Football League is attempting the impossible, a reasoned but dubious mission that has already tripped up an institution as venerable as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, municipalities as large as New York City and countless parents of teenagers across the land. The goal: banning the n-word within the chalk-lined borders of its purview.

As with the previous attempts, the NFL’s “zero tolerance” policy — which gives referees leeway to issue a 15-yard penalty for a first offense and ejection for a second — comes with good intentions: to establish a field of play free of the most racially charged word in American history.

Houston Pastors Send Bold Message To Their Mayor: ‘Don’t Mess With The Pulpits Of America’

Dave Urbanski, Nov. 2, 2014, The Blaze

After Dr. Ed Young walked up to the microphone at Grace Community Church in Houston, Texas, Sunday night, the pastor of First Baptist Church had a stern message for the mayor of the city: ”Don’t mess with the pulpits of America.”

Those gathered in the sanctuary for “I Stand Sunday” — a spirited event in reaction to the now-withdrawn subpoena of pastors’ homosexuality-themed speeches and sermons that caused a nationwide uproar over freedom of speech and religion — cheered and clapped loudly in response.
