'It’s Going To Be Bad, Whatever Happens': Greece On Edge As Eurozone Exit Looms

By Jon Henley, Jun. 16, 2015, The Guardian

“Everybody’s doing it,” said Joanna Christofosaki, in front of a Eurobank cash dispenser in the leafy Athens neighbourhood of Kolonaki. “Our friends have all done it. Nobody wants their money to be worthless tomorrow. Nobody wants to be unable to get at it.”

A researcher in the archaeology department at the Academy of Athens, Christofosaki said she knew plenty of people who had “€10,000 somewhere at home” and plenty of others who chose to keep their stash at the office. Was she among them? “If I was, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.”

It was not too hard, in central Athens’ plushest district on Tuesday, to find people worried that the latest breakdown of talks between Greece and its creditors over a new aid-for-reforms deal may have implications for the security – and accessibility – of their savings.

Nobel Winning UK Science Nobel Prof Force To Resign Over "Sexist" Remarks

By Robin McKie, Jun. 13, 2015, The Guardian

As jokes go, Sir Tim Hunt’s brief standup routine about women in science last week must rank as one of the worst acts of academic self-harm in history. As he reveals to the Observer, reaction to his remarks about the alleged lachrymose tendencies of female researchers has virtually finished off the 72-year-old Nobel laureate’s career as a senior scientific adviser.

What he said was wrong, he acknowledges, but the price he and his wife have had to pay for his mistakes has been extreme and unfair. “I have been hung out to dry,” says Hunt.

His wife, Professor Mary Collins, one of Britain’s most senior immunologists, is similarly indignant. She believes that University College London – where both scientists had posts – has acted in “an utterly unacceptable” way in pressuring both researchers and in failing to support their causes.

Daniel Ek: Spotify And Free Music Will Save The Industry, Not Kill It

By Stuart Drege, Jun. 6, 2015, The Guardian

The chief executive of Spotify, Daniel Ek, has predicted that the free online music service will help the industry grow to as much as 10 times its current size, in a future where old distinctions between providers break down.

Having paid out $3bn to music rights holders so far, Spotify is pitching itself as a competitor to traditional broadcasting, having recently added news, weather, podcasts and videos to its service. “The old-world paradigms we used to have are no longer true. When I think about music in the future, I don’t make a distinction between what’s radio, what used to be the music library, and so on,” Ek told theObserver in a rare interview. “It’s only going to be listening – and, as that goes forward, this old notion of these different industries or different competitors will collapse and merge together.”

Spotify is stepping up its efforts to appeal to mainstream radio listeners by emphasising its collection of playlists “programmed” by an in-house editorial team and suggested to users based on the time of day, popular activities and their listening habits. “We’re getting better and better at giving upcoming artists exposure on the service and creating tools to give those new artists a way to market themselves.

Free-speech Activists To Drop DVD Copies Of The Interview Into North Korea

By Ben Child, Feb. 10, 2015, The Guardian

A coalition of human-rights activists is to airdrop DVD copies of the Kim Jong-un baiting comedy The Interview over North Korea.

The Cinema For Peace Foundation, which is leading the project, said it would use hydrogen balloons to transport the controversial film to the country, in a symbolic gesture aimed at encouraging free speech. North Korea has attacked The Interview for scenes of violence against Kim Jong-un, and the FBI said in December that it believed hackers linked to the regime were responsible for a recent cyber attack on studio Sony that saw entire movies, sensitive private emails and salary details of Hollywood luminaries released publicly onto the web.

“We will start sending hydrogen balloons with DVDs of The Interview to North Korea, so that the people there can watch the movie.

Kid Rock: ‘I’m Not Just Wealthy, I’m Loaded’

Ed Cumming, Jan. 3, 2015, The Guardian

I can say that because I’m not embarrassed – I’ve made a f***-ton of money, but I’ve never made a dishonest dollar. I try to do right by the people around me.

I don’t smoke much weed, it makes me dumb. But they should legalise and tax everything: pot, cocaine, heroin. Has it not been proven that people will always find a way to get what they want?

I’m always buying more guns. I have everything from a Civil War cannon to an MP5 machine gun and old police guns. If someone invades your house, yeah, you can shoot them. I don’t think crazy people should have guns.

Hillary Clinton Questions Argentine President Cristina Kirchner's Mental Health

Rory Carroll, Nov. 29, 2010, The Guardian

Clinton's preoccupation may stem partly from the fact that Kirchner's career has mirrored her own: both are lawyers and tough political operators whose husbands became president and campaigned for their wives to inherit the sash after they left office. Before being elected in 2007 Kirchner welcomed the comparisons and called the then New York senator an inspiration.

Vladimir Putin Invites Kim Jong-un To Moscow

Reuters, Dec. 19, 2014, The Guardian

It would be Kim’s first foreign visit since taking the helm of the reclusive east Asian state in 2011. His personal envoy travelled to Moscow last month as part of efforts by the two Cold War-era allies to improve relations.

“Yes, such an invitation was sent,” a Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told the state news agency, Tass. Russia marks the former Soviet Union’s 1945 victory every year on 9 May.

US Backed Talks Between Jihadi Clerics And ISIS In Effort To Save Hostage's Life

Ali Younes, Shiv Malik, Spencer Ackerman, and Mustafa Khalili, Dec. 18, 2014, The Guardian

The ultimately unsuccessful initiative to save him was the brainchild of a controversial New York lawyer, Stanley Cohen, who has represented Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law and members of Hamas in US courts.

Cohen persuaded two senior clerics aligned with al-Qaida to intervene with Isis on behalf of the American. One, Abu Muhammed al-Maqdisi, is regarded as the world’s most influential living jihadi scholar, while the other, Abu Qatada, was once branded by a Spanish judge as al-Qaida’s “spiritual ambassador” in Europe.

Bill Cosby's Lawyers Strong-Armed Tabloid Into Ditching Story On Rape Claims

Ed Pilkington, Nov. 21, 2014, The Guardian

The National Enquirer’s investigation was carried out in 2005, just weeks after it first emerged that Cosby had been accused of drugging and molesting a female friend, Andrea Constand. The tabloid magazine dispatched its senior reporter Robin Mizrahi to look into the story.

Mizrahi made contact with a second woman, Beth Ferrier, who alleged that she too had been drugged and sexually molested by the entertainer. The Enquirer brought Ferrier to Los Angeles from her home in Denver, where she was then working as a model, and Mizrahi interviewed her and arranged for her to undergo a lie detector test.

Congressman Warns Of 'Civil War' Among Democrats Unless Obama Acts On Immigration

Paul Lewis, Nov. 3, 2014, The Guardian

A Democratic congressman who has led the drive for immigration reform said Monday that Latino voters could punish the party’s candidates in the midterm elections and warned of a “civil war” among Democrats unless Barack Obama uses his executive authority to suspend deportations of undocumented migrants.

Speaking on the campaign trail in Colorado on the eve of the elections, Representative Luis Gutiérrez, a key figure in the push for immigration reform on Capitol Hill, said the president’s decision to delay action on immigration has sapped enthusiasm among Hispanic voters.

Richard Branson Failed To Deliver On $3Bn Climate Change Pledge

Richard Branson and President Bill Clinton
Source:  www.theguardian.com
By The Guardian, Sept. 13, 2014

Richard Branson has failed to deliver on his much-vaunted pledge to spend $3bn (£1.8bn) over a decade to develop a low carbon fuel.

Seven years into the pledge, Branson has paid out only a small fraction of the promised money – “well under $300m” – according to a new book by the writer and activist, Naomi Klein.
The British entrepreneur famously promised to divert a share of the profits from his Virgin airlines empire to find a cleaner fuel, after a 2006 private meeting with Al Gore.

Branson went on to found a $25m Earth prize for a technology that could safely suck 1bn tons of carbon a year from the atmosphere. In 2009, he set up the Carbon War Room, an NGO which works on business solutions for climate change.

But by Klein’s estimate, Branson’s “firm commitment” of $3bn failed to materialise.

“So the sceptics might be right: Branson’s various climate adventures may indeed prove to have all been a spectacle, a Virgin production, with everyone’s favourite bearded billionaire playing the part of planetary saviour to build his brand, land on late night TV, fend off regulators, and feel good about doing bad,” Klein writes in This Changes Everything, Capitalism vs The Climate.

UK Accused Of Harbouring Libyan Cleric Who Helped Aid Islamist Insurgency

Chris Stephen and Josh Halliday, Aug. 29, 2014, Theguardian.com

Britain has been accused of housing a possible war crimes suspect after the Guardian learned that Libya's highest spiritual leader, the grand mufti Sheikh Sadik Al-Ghariani, helped orchestrate the Islamist takeover of Tripoli from the UK.

On a day when David Cameron announced tougher measures to tackle the threat from terrorists, the Foreign Office confirmed that Ghariani was residing in the UK, from where he is encouraging his followers to overthrow the Libyan government.

Earlier this week, the radical cleric celebrated the violent capture of Tripoli by Islamist militia force Libya Dawn and called for a widening of the rebellion using an online television channel registered by a close family relative in Exeter.

The day after Tripoli fell to the Islamist group Libya Dawn, Ghariani sent congratulations to the Islamist militants using his internet channel, Tanasuh: "I congratulate the revolutionaries in their victory, I give blessing to the martyrs," he said.

Ghariani's presence in Britain will prove acutely embarrassing for the government, emerging on the day the prime minister warned of a "greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before" from Islamist extremists as the security threat level was raised from substantial to severe.

The matter is also likely to strain relations with Washington. American officials are understood to be furious that he has been allowed a pulpit to preach in the UK, particularly following his praise in June of the militant group Ansar Sharia, which the US blames for the killing of its ambassador Chris Stevens in Bengazi in 2012.

Elton John
Credit:  David Shankbone
By The Guardian, Jun. 29, 2014, Theguardian.com

Jesus would have been a supporter of gay marriage, Sir Elton John has claimed.

The musician, who plans to marry his civil partner David Furnish next year in a "very quiet" ceremony, said that rules preventing gay clergy from marrying and requiring Catholic priests to be celibate were "old and stupid things".

He told Sky News's Murnaghan programme: "The church hierarchy, the traditionalists, might be up in arms about it but times have changed.

"If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen.

"He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the church should be about."

Sir Elton said he believed the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, was "doing a good job" and Pope Francis was "wonderful".

"He's excited me so much by his humanity," the singer said of the pope.

"He's taken everything down to the humility of faith.

"He's stripped it down to the bare bones and said it's all basically about love and inclusiveness. That has to be encouraged by the Church of England as well."

By Michael Goodwin, Apr. 19, 2014

It’s official: Treason is cool and traitors are acceptable sources for journalists. The Pulitzer Prize says so.

In giving the 2014 Public Service award to The Washington Post and The Guardian for publishing stories based on Edward Snowden’s stolen documents, the Pulitzer judges gave their stamp of approval to news organizations that cooperate with criminals and compromise national security. No doubt the lesson will trickle down to scoop-hungry young journalists that they should cultivate people willing to betray America.

And why not? Those scribes whose sources steal the most important documents could win a Pulitzer and be the toast of anti-Americans around the world. No responsibility for catastrophe is required.

Other ambitious young people might conclude there is glory in being the next Snowden. If they’re really successful, they might get to be part of a propaganda event with Vladimir Putin, as the fugitive Snowden was last week.

Indicted by a federal grand jury under the Espionage Act, he lives under the tender mercies of Putin and the warm embrace of the Communist state. He’s safe as long as he’s useful, as he was when Putin took time out from carving up his neighbors to use Snowden to mock America. Because the former NSA contractor didn’t bat out a secret message with his eyes that he was being tortured, we must assume that he’s voluntarily burnishing Putin’s image during the campaign to crush the freedom of millions of Ukrainians.

Snowden’s video appearance with the dictator, where he asked the ex-KGB agent a softball question about Russian surveillance, should have embarrassed the Pulitzer people. Coming days after they sanctified his dirty work, they were reminded that Snowden is no whistleblower.

He didn’t stay to make his case to the American public or to fight the charges in court. He ran first to China and then to Russia to spill his national-security secrets about programs that aim to stop the next 9/11 before it happens.

Snowden stole thousands of documents in part by tricking colleagues into surrendering their security passwords to get access beyond his clearance level.

What are the odds?

I mean, Vladimir Putin does a call-in show and one guy who happens to get through—to ask a question in English—is Ed Snowden?

That is one amazing coincidence—almost as amazing as those soldiers who mysteriously materialized in Crimea turning out to be Russian.

In a few moments, Snowden became part of a Soviet-style propaganda machine, even though he clearly views himself as a public-spirited crusader.

After Snowden leaked all those NSA documents to the Guardian and the Washington Post, which shared a Pulitzer Prize this week, he fled to Hong Kong and then to Moscow, which was more than happy to tweak President Obama by harboring him.

But Snowden is clearly drawn to the spotlight, and he played a starring role in Putin’s political theater on Thursday.

He gave the Russian leader a chance to beat his chest about how moral he is, compared to the bad old USA.

Keep in mind that Snowden is not just some zealous activist. Some people think he’s a traitor, others think he’s a hero sparking a global debate. But there is no dispute that he is a fugitive from justice.

Nor did he just ask a question. He gave a little speech, saying that White House and other reviews of the NSA surveillance program had concluded “that these programs are ineffective in stopping terrorism. They also found that they unreasonably intrude into the private lives of ordinary citizens.”

Having delivered his anti-NSA spin, Snowden serves up the pitch for Putin to hit: “Does Russia intercept, store, or analyze in any way the communications of millions of individuals? And do you believe that simply increasing the effectiveness of intelligence or law enforcement investigations can justify placing societies, rather than subjects, under surveillance?”

What a coup for Putin. And he did not miss the opportunity.
