Nobel Winning UK Science Nobel Prof Force To Resign Over "Sexist" Remarks

By Robin McKie, Jun. 13, 2015, The Guardian

As jokes go, Sir Tim Hunt’s brief standup routine about women in science last week must rank as one of the worst acts of academic self-harm in history. As he reveals to the Observer, reaction to his remarks about the alleged lachrymose tendencies of female researchers has virtually finished off the 72-year-old Nobel laureate’s career as a senior scientific adviser.

What he said was wrong, he acknowledges, but the price he and his wife have had to pay for his mistakes has been extreme and unfair. “I have been hung out to dry,” says Hunt.

His wife, Professor Mary Collins, one of Britain’s most senior immunologists, is similarly indignant. She believes that University College London – where both scientists had posts – has acted in “an utterly unacceptable” way in pressuring both researchers and in failing to support their causes.

Malala Yousafzai Becomes Youngest Recipient Of Nobel Peace Prize

By Inae Oh, Oct. 10, 2014, Motherjones.com

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot by the Taliban at the age of 14 for her advocacy work promoting girls' education, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, along with children's rights activist from India, Kailash Satyarthi. Satyarthi is 60-years-old, Yousafzai is 17, the youngest recipient ever. She was at school doing her thing when she learned she had won the honor.

The announcement from the Norwegian Nobel Commmittee:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 is to be awarded to Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzay for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. Children must go to school and not be financially exploited. In the poor countries of the world, 60% of the present population is under 25 years of age. It is a prerequisite for peaceful global development that the rights of children and young people be respected. In conflict-ridden areas in particular, the violation of children leads to the continuation of violence from generation to generation.

Obama Has Bombed 7 Countries Since Accepting Nobel Peace Prize

Christine Rouselle, Sept. 24, 2014, Townhall.com

An editorial published yesterday on CNN pointed out the irony of how Barack Obama, the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has bombed seven countries since receiving the award.

The seven countries are: Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria. The airstrikes were carried out with both drones and manned aircraft.

By Tina Daunt, Apr. 2, 2014, The Hollywood Reporter

Al Gore might need to dust off his projector. The creative forces behind the Oscar-winning environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth are hatching plans for a sequel to the film that raised global awareness of climate change. "We have had conversations," producer Lawrence Bender tells THR. "We've met; we've discussed. If we are going to make a movie, we want it to have an impact."

The first film certainly did. Released in 2006 by Paramount and Jeff Skoll's Participant Media, the Davis Guggenheim-directed doc grossed nearly $50 million worldwide and helped propel Gore, its narrator, to a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. But Bender believes that during the ensuing years, the fossil-fuel industry has changed the dialogue with a misinformation campaign. "They did a really good job of pushing back and confusing people," he says. "Some people actually believe global warming doesn't exist."
