PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia's mayor is promising a review of the city's July Fourth concert after several acts used expletives during their performances.

Mayor Michael Nutter tells KYW-AM that concert organizers are contractually obligated to make the free concert suitable for families. He says the city will work to make next year's "Welcome America" concert more family-friendly.

Friday night's televised concert featured Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran and other performers.

Nutter apologized to anybody in the audience who was offended but also pointed out they were free to go.

  1. Will somebody please look into this? It was a total disgrace! I live in southern New Jersey and this is our local 4th of July concert aired on ABC affiliate WPVI Channel 6 out of Philadelphia, PA. I turned it on for my 7-year-old daughter to watch at 7 PM during family television hour. I left the room for a little bit when one of the performers named Vicci Martinez was singing. When I came back, my daughter told me she sang the s word. While I watched with her for a little while, the host Marlon Wayans came on using the n word and making jokes about getting drunk, smoking pot and white people being in the crowd. This concert is known locally as Wawa Welcome America (Vh1 airs it as Philly 4th of July Jam), but these comments were more divisive than welcoming. The rest of the program was filled with long silent stretches of the TV station's logo on the screen as they tried to censor obscenities from almost every other performer one by one or out of fear that more might come. Sometimes, they did not cut away when they should have and maybe sometimes they cut away when it wasn't needed. I know we're going to hear bad words sometimes, but does it have to be during a family holiday event. When people complain to the FCC, sometimes I think they should have known what they were watching, but this was a 4th of July concert. In an interview, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said don't participate if you don't like your family hearing the n word or curse words. On social media, the concert sponsor Wawa responds to compliments about the concert but not complaints. Some of the performers are annoyed that people are complaining. Was this concert supposed to be a holiday celebration or a slap in the face?
