Wealthy Donors Sided With Democrats In Midterms

Among the top 100 individual donors to political groups, more than half gave primarily to Democrats or their allies. Among groups that funneled more than $100,000 to allies, the top of the list tilted overwhelmingly toward Democrats — a group favoring the GOP doesn't appear on the list until No. 14.

The two biggest super PACs of 2014? Senate Majority PAC and House Majority PAC — both backing Democrats.

Enough, Donna Brazile told White House political director David Simas the day after the midterms.

Democrats are in worse shape than when President Barack Obama came into office — the number of seats they have in Congress, the number of governors, a party approval rating that’s fallen behind Republicans for the first time in recent history, enthusiasm, energy. The White House, Brazile said when she came to meet with Simas, has got to focus for the next two years on getting the party into better shape, and Obama’s the best and most effective person to get out the message.

The Democrats' sinking fortunes have been pretty accurately charted in the declining ratings at MSNBC, the party's house network, which culminated, on election night, in a 22% fall from the last midterm election in the all-important 25-to-54 age group.

MSNBC's problem is almost exactly the same as the Democrats' problem: It built its future around a vivid and dramatic hero who, unfortunately, turned out to be both opaque and conflict averse. MSNBC now has a lineup of ever-righteous and often sulky defenders of President Barack Obama, who seem, not just to conservatives but to many liberals, too, bizarrely tone deaf and lost in time.

This is just the sort of bad zeitgeist bet that can so often happen in television programming.

Just 4 In 10 Ferguson Voters Cast Ballots

 (CNN) -- Charles Davis didn't sense a great deal of excitement leading up to Ferguson, Missouri, elections on Tuesday.

His Ferguson Burger Bar & More is situated along the primary protest route in the city. People have streamed in and out of the eatery since it opened just before Michael Brown was shot in August.

Along with handmade burgers and milkshakes, his patrons have been able to pick up voter registration forms from the counter where they place their orders. While Davis saw voters wearing stickers and some customers mentioned the elections, it wasn't a regular point of discussion in the days before the polls opened.

"A lot of people didn't talk about it," he said. "It was a dead conversation."

Davis, who is registered to vote in Illinois but whose wife voted in Ferguson on Tuesday, concedes that general and midterm elections don't excite him. But in April 2015, when city elections are held? When three of the six City Council seats will be up for grabs? Now, that's a different story.

The narrative was that now that the Republicans have control of both chambers of Congress, it is incumbent upon them to work with Obama and the other Democrats in the service of “getting things done” and “fixing the broken system.”

I was at the Texas Capitol on June 25, 2013. I waited for hours to get into the Senate gallery so I could see Wendy Davis stand on the floor in her hot pink sneakers, doing her best to protect the rights of the thousands of women who were watching her from above, rooting for her from the rotunda and depending on her from the farthest-flung reaches of the state. In what was literally the 11th hour, state guards shut the doors to the viewing gallery and locked them from inside. I was at the very front of the line and would have been the next person allowed entry.

I wasn’t, though, so I stayed in the hallway with the other people dressed in orange, huddled around a stranger’s phone and trying to glean from the Internet what all the yelling inside was about. It’s difficult to describe what it felt like to listen to a chorus of people screaming “let her speak” from just outside the Senate chamber that night, or what it felt like to be quite literally shut out of my government — to be shut out of the process by which a predominantly male Legislature ostentatiously attempted to strip Texas women of our rights. It was exhausting.

Bill Maher Does Not Flip A District

Bill Maher’s “flip a district” campaign failed to toss Republican Minnesota Rep. John Kline from his House seat.

“I am humbled and honored to once again serve Minnesotans in the 2nd District for the next two years,” Kline tweeted late Tuesday evening.

With nearly 70 percent of precincts reporting, Kline was leading his opponent, Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate Mike Obermueller by 20 points — 57 to 37 percent, the Associated Press reported.

Maher responded to Kline’s victory on Wednesday.

 “Well, i guess we picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue. And flipping Republicans. Enjoy it John Kline, at least people are on to U now,” Maher tweeted.

The host of HBO’s “Real Time” took to Twitter on Tuesday as well to urge voters, and specifically college students, to show up and cast a ballot.

No Obama Pivot After Midterms

Voters demanded change from Washington on Tuesday, and Republicans say it’s now up to President Barack Obama to deliver it.

But don’t count on that happening.

The White House that emerges after the midterm elections won’t look, act or sound drastically different than the one battered for months by Republicans and abandoned by Democrats desperate to hang onto power. The president will seek some common ground with Republicans, but there are limits to how far Obama wants to go — and Senate Democrats will let him go.

Despite losing the Senate, Obama doesn’t think too much should be read into election results from a handful of states that never approved of his job performance in the first place. Obama acknowledges that he needs to do better, and he will make modest adjustments to his staffing, messaging and legislative strategy in response. But he won’t pivot to the right, as he did after his self-proclaimed shellacking in 2010, White House officials said in interviews this week.

Rather than accept the election results as a repudiation of his own administration, the president said voters were disenchanted with Washington as a whole. And rather than offering dour assessments of his party's electoral thrashing, as he did after the 2010 midterms, the president insisted repeatedly that he was optimistic about the country's future.

"It doesn't make me mopey," he said of the election during a news conference in the East Room of the White House. "It energizes me because it means that this democracy's working."
