President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to jumpstart a bill in Congress that would ban the Muslim Brotherhood by declaring it a terrorist organization.
 
 Trump foreign-policy adviser Walid Pheres told Egyptian news outlet Youm7 that the legislation, introduced a year ago by U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was held up due to the Obama administration’s support of the group. But Trump plans to back the bill.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson asked a judge not to find him and other Obama administration officials in contempt after his agency recovered work permits mistakenly issued after the court halted a controversial immigration initiative.

Johnson said the government reclaimed all but 22 of the 2,500 offending permits and corrected federal computer databases to invalidate the rest, according to a report filed late Friday in federal court in Brownsville, Texas. Administration lawyers said the effort should prove Johnson and other top immigration officials have been sufficiently compliant to head off a contempt hearing set for later this month.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen ordered President Barack Obama’s program halted until a trial can be held over a lawsuit by 26 states. Hanen has repeatedly chastised White House lawyers and immigration officials for their “cavalier attitude” about violating his order and accused them of dragging their feet.

Obama Administration Stops Work On Immigrant Program

A series of legal setbacks have halted the government’s intensive preparations to move forward with President Obama’s executive actions shielding millions of illegal immigrants from deportation, even as community organizations continue a rapid push to get ready for the programs, according to U.S. officials and immigrant advocacy groups.

Since a federal judge first blocked the new programs in February, the Department of Homeland Security has suspended plans to hire up to 3,100 new employees, most of whom would be housed in an 11-story building the government has leased for $7.8 million a year in Arlington, Va. That building, in the Crystal City area, is now sitting mostly unused, DHS employees say.

Yet inside and outside the Beltway, community groups are mobilizing, educating immigrants and training volunteers to help them apply for relief, even though it remains unclear whether the program will ever begin. Most recently, a foundation headed by billionaire George Soros, undaunted by the court rulings, pledged at least $8 million to that effort.

DHS Broke Judge’s Order, Approved Amnesty Applications Despite Injunction

President Obama’s lawyers admitted to a federal judge late Thursday that they had broken the court’s injunction halting the administration’s new deportation amnesty, issuing thousands of work permits even after Judge Andrew S. Hanen had ordered the program stopped.

The stunning admission, filed just before midnight in Texas, where the case is being heard, is the latest misstep for the administration’s lawyers, who are facing possible sanctions by Judge Hanen for their continued problems in arguing the case.

The Justice Department lawyers said Homeland Security, which is the defendant in the case, told them Wednesday that an immigration agency had approved about 2,000 applications for three-year work permits, which was part of Mr. Obama’s new amnesty, even after Judge Hanen issued his Feb. 16 injunction halting the entire program.

If you cannot execute a surrender, well, then you’re in real trouble. And if you can’t execute a surrender when you control both houses, you ought to think of a different line of work. The Republicans lost on this. There was a way out, it would have been a radical way, and that would have been to abolish the filibuster and to pass it in the Senate and to pass it in the House. That would have worked, nobody wanted to go radical, that’s okay. But if you don’t, you can’t get anything through because the Democrats would stop it in the Senate. If it’s stopped in the Senate, it’s futile to attempt to do it in the House because it will go nowhere. So, at this point, if you’re not going to go radical in the Senate, you throw in the towel, you don’t prolong the agony, and you fight somewhere else on firmer ground.

John Boehner Has No Idea How Republicans Will Get Out Of Their Immigration Mess

For the third straight day, Democrats filibustered the Senate GOP’s effort to pass the House GOP bill that funded the Department of Homeland Security while rolling back Obama’s executive actions shielding millions from deportation. What happens now is unclear.

One thing is clear, however: John Boehner has no idea how Republicans are going to get out of this mess. Ed O’Keefe reports:

How exactly Republicans plan to proceed remains unclear. The impasse has once again exposed deep differences between hard-line conservatives strongly opposed to Obama’s immigration actions and more moderate Republicans who disagree with what the president did, but realize that they can do very little to reverse the president’s moves without super-majorities in the House and Senate.

Asked by reporters on Thursday if he knows how McConnell plans to proceed after three days of failing to advance the bill, House Speaker John A. Boehner shrugged his shoulders and said: “No.”

DHS Renews Non-Deportation Policy For 'Dreamers' --Welcome mat for illegal alien kids

 The Obama administration announced Thursday that it will renew the non-deportation for young adult illegal immigrants, meaning the more than 560,000 so-called “Dreamers” in the program can continue living and working in the U.S. with no fear of deportation.

 “Despite the acrimony and partisanship that now exists in Washington, almost all of us agree that a child who crossed our border illegally with a parent, or in search of a parent or a better life, was not making an adult choice to break our laws, and should be treated differently than adult law-breakers,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in announcing the program’s renewal for another two years.

 Lauded by immigrant rights groups as a humanitarian gesture, the program, which the government termed Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, has been wildly popular with Hispanic voters, and polls show it receives generally good marks with the public at large.

 Critics, however, call it President Obama’s “mini-amnesty” program and say it is contributing to a new surge in illegal immigration — including driving up the number of young children crossing the border alone. Homeland Security officials have termed that a crisis.

 Those on both sides view DACA as a trial run for a broader legalization program — whether done by executive action or by law, if Congress can agree on something.

 To qualify under DACA, immigrants had to have been in the U.S. before age 16, had to have been 30 or younger as of June 15, 2012, and had to prove some degree of educational attainment. Applicants were also put through a background check in an effort to weed out those with serious criminal charges on their records.

 More than 96 percent of those who have gone through the DACA process have been approved, which some analysts say shows how little screening is done. The program’s backers, though, say that shows just how prepared and deserving this population is.

 Under the program, when Dreamers encounter authorities they can show papers proving they are not going to be deported.
