Former Obama White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, now a political commentator for CNN, casually admitted that, yes, his party uses race to convince minorities that Republicans seek to oppress them.
Before the midterm election, Carney said: "Republicans are going to pick up seats in the Senate and the House, and they may win control of the Senate. So (Democrats) need to mobilize their base voters, and that is especially true of minority voters."
Carney also admitted that the use of the race card is cynical: "Equating support for stand-your-ground law ... doesn't mean you supported the action that took Trayvon Martin's life. So that's the kind of, you know, rough ad -- similar to the one we saw from the Republican. I think we've come to expect that, and hopefully a lot of voters ... kind of tune it out."
Carney claims both sides use race to gin up their base. But when Republicans do it, he insists, they do so out of racism. Consider this exchange with Bill Kristol, the conservative publisher of the Weekly Standard. Carney claims that the Republicans' push for voter ID is motivated by the racist Republican desire to suppress the black vote:
Kristol: I voted in Virginia last Saturday. Since I was going to be in New York next week, I voted early absentee in person, and I had to show my driver's license. Do you think that's really a problem?
Carney: You know what the statistics say. You know who is most affected by the requirements, essentially poll tax-type requirements.
Kristol: Poll tax? Showing an identification is like charging people a fine, a tax?
Carney: Bill, you know that the fraud isn't substantial and real. You know it doesn't have a significant impact, because it's so minimal, on election results and you know what the motivation is behind it. You know it.
Kristol: I just totally disagree. But that's OK.
Carney: No, you don't.
So here we have two white guys -- three counting host Jake Tapper -- discussing black-white relations. White Democrat accuses white Republican of being racist against blacks. White Republican denies it. White Democrat says: Oh, yes, you are, and you can deny it all you want. But you are a bigot unless and until I say otherwise. White Republican meekly denies the charge. The subject is changed. Let's move on.
Conservative commentator Ben Stein recently called out Obama and the Democrats on their vulgar use of the race card: "What the White House is doing is trying to racialize all politics, and they're especially trying to tell the African-American voter that the GOP is against letting them have a chance at a good life in this economy. And that's just a complete lie. ... The President is the most racist president there has ever been in America. He is purposely trying to use race to divide Americans." Memo to RNC Chair Reince Priebus: Stein has just shown how to counter the race card -- with facts.
How pathetic is Obama's use of it? When running for president in 2008 -- and to prove he wasn't at all like the Reverend Al Sharpton, Obama refused to even appear with the race-hustling flamethrower. Today, they are BFF's.
Six years in, the Obama administration cannot brag about growth. This recovery is the nation's worst in 80 years, arguably ever. Dems cannot talk about declining black poverty because the rate is about where it was when Obama took office. Black Inner-city teenage unemployment exceeds 50 percent in some cities.
A black 82-year-old grandmother, a lifelong Democrat, recently called C-SPAN to explain why this time she "voted straight Republican": "I have noticed ... what the Democratic Party has done to my people. Unemployment is high in the black community -- we are double with unemployment -- than it is anywhere else. ... And I'm not talking about the people that need help -- because with so many people getting help that doesn't need help, it prevents the people that really need help from getting it. ... I hear my people calling in all the time saying that every time you say something against the ideology of President Obama, that you're doing it because he is black. We need to stop that foolishness. This man is destroying this country, and it's what he intended to do. He said he was going to transform America, and that's what he's doing."
More alarming for Democrats, it's not just 82-year-old black grannies who are reconsidering their allegiance to the Party. Young black people, the "hope and change" voters who turned out in record numbers for Obama, have also been mugged by the reality of uncommonly high unemployment and underemployment. They see that government, even when led by a young, progressive, empathetic black President, will not solve their problems. Among black 18- to 29-year-olds, nearly one-third of them now self-describe as political "independents."
After Tuesday's election, Democrats better order some new race cards. The deck is getting thin.

Former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney admitted on CNN today that Democrats are “going to have a bad election day” any way you look at it, considering how well the Republicans are doing and how likely it is they will make some significant gains in both chambers of Congress.
Carney said, “No matter how you slice it Republicans are gonna pick up seats in the Senate and the House, and they may win control of the Senate.”

House Republicans accused the Obama administration Thursday of “perhaps criminal” behavior for having withheld for months key email that sheds light on how the administration framed its post-Benghazi talking points, potentially violating a congressional subpoena.
House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, said Secretary of State John F. Kerry will have to come before Congress to explain why his department refused to release the email until forced to do so by a judge.
Meanwhile, a retired Air Force brigadier general who was in the U.S. Africa Command’s headquarters the night of the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic post in Benghazi testified that he and others quickly realized the assault was spawned by terrorists. The general said it was either negligence or willful ignorance that led the White House, amid a re-election campaign, to say the violence was ignited by anger over a video.
Several high-profile Republican senators said the revelations, combined with questions still unanswered, should spur Congress to create an independent investigative committee to get the answers.
“If the White House won’t explain it, Secretary Kerry should come to the Capitol to explain why he defied an official congressional subpoena. And the White House needs to understand that this investigation will not end until the entire truth is revealed and justice and accountability are served,” Mr. Boehner said.
Judicial Watch, a public interest law firm, obtained the email under an open-records request enforced by a court order. The email shows a top White House national security official shaping how U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice should talk about the attack on a round of Sunday political talk shows. The email said blame should be placed on an Internet video.
The White House dismissed the rekindled questions.
“This is a conspiracy theory in search of a conspiracy,” press secretary Jay Carney said.

In today's press briefing, Jay Carney was asked about the number of Obamacare premium payments that have been made. In other words, the total number of people actually, factually covered, not including window shoppers and unpaid accounts.
"We dispute their numbers. We don't have hard, concrete numbers, but we dispute them," the press secretary reasonably explained.
The question followed a report from the House Energy Committee on how many enrollees had actually paid for their chosen Obamacare plans. The report stated, “as of April 15, 2014, only 67 percent of individuals and families that had selected a health plan in the federally facilitated marketplace had paid their first month’s premium and therefore completed the enrollment process.” Just one quarter of those who had paid into the system were young people aged 18 to 34 – the group the Obama administration most requires to sign up in order to provide solvency to the failing system. The bulk of those who signed up came from the 35-64 age group.
Carney says this is not data that is traditionally shared with government and emphasizes that the data is coming from "profit-making" companies. Chuck Todd was asking specifically about how many people included in the White House's own reported numbers as successful Obamacare enrollees - the number 8 million that is being touted and bragged about every day - aren't actually covered by insurance at this time, and whether that might change their success line by up to or in excess of one million people.
Carney's answer is that he doesn't know, but also no. They don't have the answer, but they dispute the answer anyone else might have. That's like having your cake anddenying it, too.

Yesterday I wrote about the most significant email that the Obama administration produced in response to a FOIA request by Judicial Watch. It was sent by White House political operative Ben Rhodes to a variety of administration officials whose duties related to PR, not policy. Among the recipients were David Plouffe, Dan Pfeiffer, Dag Vega and Jay Carney. Sent on the Friday before Susan Rice made her infamous tour of the Sunday morning talk shows, it set the talking points for the prep session that the group had scheduled with Rice for Saturday afternoon. While the White House has argued that the wage gap between
men and women in the White House is better than the national average, it is far
worst than the average in the District of Columbia. The pay gap among women in the White House is more than
twice as large as the average in the nation’s capital.
While female White House staffers earn about 88 cents
for every dollar men in the White House make, women in the District earn about
95 cents for every dollar a men make, according to the most
recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 12-cent pay gap at the White House compared to a
five-cent pay gap in the District of Columbia.
The metric used to derive both pay gaps is the same the
government has used to arrive at the 77-cent national average. Nevertheless, White House press secretary Jay Carney spent
this week arguing that there is no pay discrimination at the White House.
“It is absolutely true that there is equal pay for equal work
at the White House,” Carney said Tuesday.

Responding to comments regarding a Phoenix television reporter
yesterday who initially claimed that the White House pre-screens questions from
reporters, Attkisson said, “I wouldn’t surprised if sometimes there is that
level of cooperation with some questions. If I need something answered from the
White House and they won’t tell me, I’ll call our White House Correspondent.
They’re friendlier with the White House Correspondents in general. So the White
House Correspondent may ask Jay Carney or one of his folks about an issue and
they will be told ‘ask that at the briefing and we’ll answer it.’ They want to
answer it in front of everybody. They do know it’s coming and they’ll call on
you. There’s that kind of coordination sometimes. I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s
sometimes more coordination. I don’t think it’s everybody on every briefing,
every day. I’m pretty sure it’s not. But I think people would be surprised at
the level of cooperation reporters have in general with politicians.”

mistake and I own up to it': Phoenix reporter reverses course, says White House
Press Secretary Jay Carney DOESN'T get daily briefing questions in advance

House Press Secretary Jay Carney denied on Thursday a television news
reporter's day-old claim that reporters often 'provide the questions to him in
advance,' before his daily briefings, and that he sometimes provides answers on
paper before taking the podium.
WIthin
hours, the Phoenix reporter at the center of a quick-drying controversy
admitted she got the whole thing wrong.
Phoenix
news anchor Catherine Anaya reported Wednesday night on KPHO-TV5 that in an
'off the record' meeting, Carney had told a handful of local TV reporters that
White House correspondents often tell him before daily briefings what they'll
be asking.
'If
only this were true,' Carney told MailOnline Thursday morning.
By
mid-afternoon Anaya, fresh of a Washington-to-Phoenix flight, walked parts of
her story back in an email to MailOnline. But she insisted that she herself was
asked to submit a question in advance for Carney on Wednesday afternoon.

A
CBS reporter from Arizona reveals that President Obama's press secretary, Jay
Carney, receives questions from the press in advance of his daily press
briefing. In fact, she says, the reporters often receive the answers in advance
of the briefing, too.
According
to the reporter, Jay Carney told her this yesterday at the White House:
"It
was a very busy day. We started here shortly after 8 o'clock with a coffee with
press secretary Jay Carney inside his office in the West Wing," says the
reporter.
"And
this was the off-the-record so we were able to ask him all about some of the
preparation that he does on a regular basis for talking to the press in his
daily press briefings. He showed us a very long list of items that he has to be
well versed on every single day.
"And
then he also mentioned that a lot of times, unless it's something breaking, the
questions that the reporters actually ask -- the correspondents -- they are
provided to him in advance. So then he knows what he's going to be answering
and sometimes those correspondents and reporters also have those answers
printed in front of them, because of course it helps when they're producing
their reports for later on. So that was very interesting."
