RALEIGH - Billionaire businessman Donald Trump all but confirmed he’ll run for the Republican presidential nomination during a stop Saturday at the N.C. GOP convention.

Trump says he’ll make his formal announcement on June 16. “I think a lot of people are going to be very happy” with the decision, Trump told The News & Observer before a sold-out speech Saturday night. “They’re tired of watching America go down. ... It’s about making America great again. I can do it, and nobody else can do it.”

He made a point of using the phrase “if I run” in his speech but voiced frustration with a disclaimer: “June 16, will you come, please, fast – I’m so tired of saying that.”

Trump referred to the constantly growing field of Republican candidates as “clowns,” and said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio have already made major gaffes.

“After watching Bush make a total ass---- of himself, Rubio makes an ass---- of himself,” Trump said of his potential opponents.

Addressing criticism that he lacks the political experience to be president, Trump said he’d be strong on foreign policy.

“I’ve made a lot of money beating China and other countries,” he said. “I only have experience beating other countries. Is that good experience?”

Baltimore Police Union: Cops More Afraid Of Going To Jail Than Getting Shot

The president of the Baltimore police union on Thursday said that criminals have become "empowered" following the recent unrest and that, with six officers charged in Freddie Gray's death, city police are more "afraid" of being arrested than shot on duty.

Gray, 25, died a week after suffering a severed spinal cord and other injuries in police custody. His death led to more than a week of protests and later rioting, that prompted a citywide curfew and the deployment of the National Guard.

"The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest," said Gene Ryan, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3. "Criminals feel empowered now. There is no respect. Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty."

Clearly the police are pouting a bit, but can you blame them? That is a dangerous-ass city to patrol, irrespective of the political climate. Now they feel resentment from the public they protect and abandoned by slimy politicians. Hard to keep your game face on under those circumstances.

The union released the statement on Twitter a day after the officers charged in Gray's death filed a motion to have the trial moved out of Baltimore. Police commissioner Anthony W. Batts apologized to the union Monday night for putting officers in harm's way.

Ted Cruz Says Net Neutrality Is 'Obamacare For The Internet

Cruz, who is mulling a run for president in 2016, compared the entire concept of "net neutrality" — which posits that internet companies should not be allowed to speed or slow down their services for certain users — to Obama's much-maligned healthcare reform.

'"Net Neutrality' is Obamacare for the Internet; the Internet should not operate at the speed of government," Cruz wrote on Twitter.

Cruz's spokeswoman, Amanda Carpenter, added that net neutrality would place the government "in charge of determining pricing, terms of service, and what products can be delivered. Sound like Obamacare much?"

Charlie Rangel: Some Republicans 'Believe That Slavery Isn't Over'

Veteran Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) had some harsh words for the Republican Party during a Thursday campaign rally for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

As he has done repeatedly before, Rangel compared some members of the GOP to confederates from the Civil War era. But at the Thursday evening event, he added that they "believe that slavery isn't over."

"We have to win. We have to be able to send a national message with Andrew Cuomo. And the thing is: Everything we believe in — everything we believe in — they hate. They don't disagree — they hate! They think if you didn't come from Europe 30 years ago, you didn't even make it. Some of them believe that slavery isn't over and they and think they won the Civil War!" Rangel shouted.

In contrast, Rangel said the Democratic Party is doing "God's work" on issues important to the American people.

Al Sharpton Says He's Helping Pick The Next Attorney General

The Rev. Al Sharpton said his civil rights organization, the National Action Network, is "engaged in immediate conversations" with the White House as they work to name a successor to Attorney General Eric Holder, who is set to announce his resignation Thursday afternoon.

"We are engaged in immediate conversations with the White House on deliberations over a successor whom we hope will continue in the general direction of Attorney General Holder," Sharpton said in a statement.

Sharpton praised Holder, the first African-American attorney general, as the "best" one in history when it comes to civil rights.

"The resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder is met with both pride and disappointment by the Civil Rights community," he said. "We are proud that he has been the best Attorney General on Civil Rights in U.S. history and disappointed because he leaves at a critical time when we need his continued diligence most."

According to a Politico profile in August, in the aftermath of the racially charged protests in Ferguson, Missouri, Sharpton has become Obama's "go-to man" on race issues.

Rev. Al Sharpton gave a passionate speech in St. Louis on Sunday morning, where he sharply criticized the release of video allegedly depicting Michael Brown, the black teen recently killed during a police encounter, robbing a convenience store before the fatal incident.

"Michael Brown is gone. You can run whatever video you want. He is not on trial. America is on trial!" Sharpton declared at the Greater St. Marks Family Church, according to video posted by Fox 2. "I have never in all my years seen something as offensive and insulting as a police chief releasing a tape of a young man trying to smear him before we even have his funeral."

The relatively small city of Ferguson, Missouri, has been the epicenter of racially charged protests since Brown's death just over a week ago. Local police have aggressively cracked down on the demonstrations, wielding military-style weapons, issuing curfews, and arresting a number of protesters and at least two reporters.

Sharpton argued the U.S. faces a "defining moment" for how police authorities manage the protests.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) traveled down to Texas on Saturday, where she addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis of thousands of unaccompanied children who have attempted to cross the border.

Pelosi, using cautious language around the word "crisis," labeled the problem an "opportunity" for America to demonstrate its values. Many of the children have been kept in shocking conditions as federal officials scrambled to provide them basic necessities.

"This is a community with a border going through it. And this crisis — that some call a 'crisis' — we have to view as an opportunity," Pelosi told reporters at a press conference.

Pelosi stressed the children involved are worthy of basic human respect as they are being moved "as quickly as possible into another setting."

"What we just saw was so stunning. If you believe as we do that every child, that every person, has a spark of divinity in them and is therefore worthy of respect, what we saw in those rooms was [a] dazzling, sparkling array of God's children, worthy of respect. So ... we have to use the crisis — that some view as a crisis, and it does have crisis qualities — as an opportunity to show who we are as Americans, that we do respect people for their divinity and worth," she said.

 Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun control group backed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is calling on the Chipotle restaurant chain to crack down on guns in its stores.

 In an email sent Monday titled "Burritos, not bullets," the group sounded the alarm over a recent incident where gun rights advocates took advantage of Texas' open carry laws and reportedly displayed their firearms openly in a Chipotle restaurant.

 "A group of gun extremists flocked into a Dallas-area Chipotle over the weekend with semiautomatic rifles strapped to their backs, alarming customers and raising serious questions about public safety at the restaurant chain's 1,600 locations," the group wrote, urging supporters to sign a petition to Chipotle's CEO, Steve Ells, demanding the company create a "clear policy prohibiting guns in restaurants."

 Bloomberg's group said the issue of guns potentially being carried in Chipotle was even more important since the restaurant serves beer and margaritas.

 "Making matters worse, most Chipotle locations serve alcohol, a potentially dangerous mix with guns," the email said. "Chipotle has no policy on guns in its stores, which means they're putting their customers -- including our children and families -- at risk."

 Chipotle responded to criticism online.

 "We recognize that it's a sensitive issue and we respect that people have very different points of view," the company wrote on Facebook. "That said, we have no position on the issue and simply comply with local laws."

 Update (6:05 pm): Chipotle provided the following statement to Business Insider after this story was published:

"The issue of gun ownership or gun rights has become one of the most contentious debates in the country. Chipotle has never taken a position on this issue, as we focus instead on our mission to change the way people think about and eat fast food…"
