New Hillary Clinton Emails Show Expansive Role Of Sidney Blumenthal

By Josh Gerstein, Jun. 30, 2015, Politico

In her early months in office, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in contact with unofficial adviser Sidney Blumenthal more often and on a wider range of topics than was previously known, a set of about 3,000 Clinton emails released Tuesday night by the State Department revealed.

While Blumenthal’s role as a provider of off-the-books intelligence reports on Libya has stirred controversy, the newly disclosed emails show he also acted as an intermediary with officials involved in the Northern Ireland peace process and shared advice with Clinton on issues from Iran to British politics to how to blame China for the breakdown of global climate talks.

A series of emails show that in October 2009, Blumenthal sought to draw Clinton into efforts to elect former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to the presidency of the European Council.

Sidney Blumenthal Played Under-The-Radar Role At Young Daily Beast

By Rosie Gray, Jun. 28, 2015, Buzz Feed

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton’s confidant Sidney Blumenthal played a quiet role in shaping, and sometimes steering political coverage, in the early days of The Daily Beast.

Blumenthal’s role, early employees said, was touched with a bit of the conspiratorial haze that has emerged as a point of controversy in Clinton’s campaign. He wasn’t listed on the site’s masthead, and the site’s founder, Tina Brown, said she had “no idea” whether or not he was on Clinton’s payroll while helping to shape the site’s political coverage. In one case, he commissioned a hit piece on a potential Clinton rival, Caroline Kennedy, though his name appeared nowhere on the story.

Brown, who founded The Daily Beast, confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Blumenthal had been a “part time consultant” in 2008 and 2009 and had “assigned and connected us to some writers as asked.”

Sidney Blumenthal, Former Bill Clinton Aide, Set To Testify Before Benghazi Panel

By Kellan Howell, Jun. 6, 2015, Washington Times

Sidney Blumenthal, a former aide to President Bill Clinton and a key ally of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will testify before the House select Committee on Benghazi on June 16, the panel announced Friday.

Mr. Blumenthal will answer questions about memos he drafted on Libya when Mrs. Clinton ran the State Department, Politico reported Friday.

“This appearance before the Select Committee on Benghazi involves a witness deposition, which is typically done in private,” an advisory from the committee states, Politico reported.

The session will be closed to the media and the public.

Committee Chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, raised questions about Mr. Blumenthal’s involvement in the State Department’s response to the Benghazi attacks on Sept. 11, 2012. The Republican lawmaker did so after reviewing thousands of documents, which showed Mr. Blumenthal and the secretary traded frequent emails on the security and diplomatic climate in Libya before the attacks.

Clinton's Benghazi Emails Show Correspondence With Adviser

By Lisa Lerer, Matthew Lee, May 21, 2015, Associated Press

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton received monthly missives about the growing unrest in Libya from a longtime friend who was previously barred by the White House from working for her as a government employee, according to emails received on her personal account.

The messages show the role played by Sidney Blumenthal, who was working for the Clinton family foundation and advising a group of entrepreneurs trying to win business from the Libyan transitional government. Blumenthal repeatedly wrote dispatches about the events in Libya to Clinton, who often forwarded them to her aides at the State Department.

Clinton's earlier efforts to hire Blumenthal, who has spent nearly two decades working for the Clinton family, as a State Department employee had been rejected by Obama administration officials who said they feared his role spreading harsh attacks against Obama in the 2008 presidential primaries would cause discomfort among members of their new White House team.

Clinton is the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for president, which has heightened the scrutiny of her use of a private email account and server while serving as secretary of state.
