Eric Holder: The 'Possibility Exists' That Edward Snowden Could Come Home

By Dustin Volz, July 6, 2015, National Journal

In a subtle yet remarkable shift in tone, former Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday that the "possibility exists" that the Justice Department could forge a deal with fugitive leaker Edward Snowden that could bring him home.

Speaking to Yahoo News, Holder said "we are in a different place as a result of the Snowden disclosures," adding that Snowden's revelations about the size and scope of the National Security Agency's sweeping surveillance programs "spurred a necessary debate.

"I certainly think there could be a basis for a resolution that everybody could ultimately be satisfied with. I think the possibility exists," Holder said.

Exclusive: China Warns U.S. Surveillance Plan

By Jim Sciutto, Chief National Security Correspondent, May 21, 2015, CNN

Above the South China Sea (CNN)The Chinese navy issued warnings eight times as a U.S. surveillance plane on Wednesday swooped over islands that Beijing is using to extend its zone of influence.

The series of man-made islands and the massive Chinese military build-up on them have alarmed the Pentagon, which is carrying out the surveillance flights in order to make clear the U.S. does not recognize China's territorial claims. The militarized islands have also alarmed America's regional allies.

Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CNN's Erin Burnett Wednesday night that the confrontation indicates there is "absolutely" a risk of the U.S. and China going to war sometime in the future.

A CNN team was given exclusive access to join in the surveillance flights over the contested waters, which the Pentagon allowed for the first time in order to raise awareness about the challenge posed by the islands and the growing U.S. response.

WikiLeaks: US, Italy Had 'Aggressively Monitored' Muslims In Italy

Sneha Shankar, Jan. 17, 2015, International Business Times

"Muslims comprise approximately two percent of the [Italian] population. The majority are moderates; only five percent of Muslims in Italy attend mosque; and many are itinerant workers… The Italian Government closely monitors this community and expels those who preach violence," according to the cable dated Sept. 26, 2005.

The U.S. had also been conducting a "Muslim Outreach" program in Italy led by Milan's Consulate General. The mission of the program was “utilizing a combination of our U.S. Speakers and Exchange programs together with Embassy resources to promote our agenda," a 2007 cable read, according to Sputnik News.

What Happens When Spies Can Eavesdrop on Any Conversation?

Patrick Tucker, Dec. 1, 2014, Defense One

Imagine having access to the all of the world’s recorded conversations, videos that people have posted to YouTube, in addition to chatter collected by random microphones in public places. Then picture the possibility of searching that dataset for clues related to terms that you are interested in the same way you search Google. You could look up, for example, who was having a conversation right now about plastic explosives, about a particular flight departing from Islamabad, about Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in reference to a particular area of Northern Iraq.

Sharyl Attikisson: We're Being 'Manipulated' By Media

Ginni Thomas, Nov. 9, 2014, Daily Caller

Sharyl Attkisson, who rejects having any political allegiance while focusing on the truth, discusses here how powerful, hidden special interests in the media increasingly hide the truth and homogenize American news. The media, to her, seem nonplussed by government privacy invasions, even when it happens to themselves.

In Part 1 of our exclusive video interview with Attkisson, she tells us how she found and reported the sophisticated, remote intrusions in her own computer and how she used her own forensic specialists to confirm the government’s intrusions prior to public awareness of similar offenses to media outlets and reporters. She even identified that someone planted classified documents in her computer, seemingly to frame her or her sources.

Harvard: OK'ed Study That Photographed Faculty, Students In Class Without Their Notice

Dev A. Patel and Steven R. Watros, Nov. 5, 2014, The Crimson

Vice Provost for Advances in Learning Peter K. Bol admitted at Tuesday’s meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to using cameras placed in classrooms to take photographs of attendance without telling the surveilled faculty and students.

Bol’s comments came in response to a question from Computer Science professor Harry R. Lewis ’68, who said he learned of the photographing—which took place during the spring 2014 semester—from two of his colleagues.

The two unidentified colleagues, neither of whom are tenured, first learned about the surveillance when a senior Central Administration official called them in to discuss the results, Lewis said in his question. The students who were enrolled in these courses and photographed have not yet been told of the study

Sharyl Attkisson’s Computer Intrusions: ‘Worse Than Anything Nixon Ever Did'

Erik Wemple, Oct. 27, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

The intrusions into former CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson’s computers constitute the narrative spine of the reporter’s new book “Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington.” The book starts with not really a word, but a sound: “Reeeeeeeeeee.”

That’s the noise that Attkisson’s Apple computer was making at 3:14 one morning. A Toshiba laptop computer issued by CBS News did the same thing a day earlier, around 4 a.m. All this goes down in October 2012, right in the midst of the Benghazi story.

Convenience store surveillance footage
By CBS St. Louis, Aug. 15, 2014

FERGUSON, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — Ferguson police released the name of the officer that fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, while also revealing that Brown was a suspect in a convenience story robbery over a $48.99 box of cigars.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said Friday morning that Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot the unarmed African-American teen last Saturday following a convenience store robbery call. Wilson has been with the Ferguson Police Department for the past six years and previously had no disciplinary action taken against him.

Wilson has been on administrative leave since the shooting.

Jackson added that Wilson was treated for injuries that occurred on Saturday.

Jackson said Wilson, along with other officers, was called to the area after a 911 call reporting a “strong-arm robbery” at a nearby convenience store.

By Tim Cushing, Apr. 17, 2014, Techdirt.com

As we've noted several times before, law enforcement and investigative agencies tend to roll outexpanded surveillance systems without bothering to run it by the citizens they're planning to surveil. The systems and programs are deployed, FOIA battles are waged and, finally, at some point, the information makes its way to the public. It is only then that most agencies start considering the privacy implications of their surveillance systems, and these are usually addressed by begrudging, minimal protections being belatedly applied.

Now, it's obvious why these agencies don't inform the public of their plans. They may uses terms like "security" and "officer safety" and theorize that making any details public would just allow criminals to find ways to avoid the persistent gaze of multiple surveillance options, but underneath it all, they know the public isn't going to just sit there and allow them to deploy intrusive surveillance programs.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is using a new surveillance program utilizing the technology of a private contractor doing business under the not-scary-at-all name of "Persistent Surveillance Systems." This gives the LASD a literal eye in the sky that provides coverage it can't achieve with systems already in place. But it does more than just give the LASD yet another camera. It provides the agency with some impressive tools to manipulate the recordings.
