Ex-Ferguson Police Chief: Unlikely That Officer Wilson Will Be Charged

Frmr. St. Louis County
Police Chief Tim Fitch
By CBS St. Louis, Oct. 20, 2014

FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOX) – Information about the Michael Brown fatal police shooting is beginning to leak out, and former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch says it’s no accident the feds are allowing the information.

Fitch discussed a New York Times article indicating, according to federal investigators, there was a struggle that led up to the fatal police shooting of Brown, with KMOX’s Mark Reardon on Monday.

Fitch calls the information from the investigation coming out as phase two – to “coordinate leaks to the media, and to start getting some of the facts out there to kind of let people down slowly,” he says. “When I say this is phase two – phase one was really Eric Holder’s announcement how they were going to basically do a complete review and take over the Ferguson Police Department.”

Fitch says he thinks the feds recognize that it’s “probably very unlikely” that there’s going to be charges against Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.

“There was a struggle over the weapon. Law enforcement, we know that about half the officers killed every year with firearms are killed with their own,” he says. “So the fact that he didn’t have his own doesn’t mean there wasn’t a weapon there available that could be used in deadly force use.”

Missouri Authorities Planning For Riots If Ferguson Officer Not Indicted

By CBS St. Louis, Oct. 4, 2014, Stlouis.cbslocal.com

FERGUSON, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — Missouri officials are reportedly planning for possible riots if a Ferguson police officer is not indicted in the death of an 18-year-old African-American.

Reuters reports that state authorities are meeting two to three times a week to draw up contingency plans in case of riots if Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson is not charged in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown. A grand jury is expected to decide next month whether Wilson will face criminal charges.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar fears violence will not only encompass Ferguson, but that riots could spread to other meetings.

“We know outside groups visited us in August. We are expecting that different people will come in from outside the St. Louis area,” Belmar told Reuters.

Protests and unrest have been common in Ferguson since Aug. 9, when Brown was shot and killed. Hundreds have been arrested in the unrest since Brown’s death, including journalists and clergy.

Ferguson Mayor James Knowles told Reuters he fears “the unrest is going to be far beyond the city of Ferguson” if Wilson is not indicted.

Ferguson Looter: ‘I’m Proud Of Us, We Deserve This’

By CBS St. Louis, Aug. 18, 2014

FERGUSON, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — The National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer.

Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades.

One looter who came out of a QuikTrip told The Washington Post that he was proud of what he was doing.

“I’m proud of us. We deserve this, and this is what’s supposed to happen when there’s injustice in your community,” DeAndre Smith told The Post. “St. Louis — not going to take this anymore.”

A police officer who asked not to be identified labeled it “looting tourism.”

“It’s like they are spending their gas money to come down here and steal,” the officer told The Post.
