Hillary Clinton’s Team Takes Another Hit On Media Briefings

Elise Amendola / AP
By Erik Wemple, May 29, 2015, Washington Post

As recounted here, the Telegraph of Nashua, N.H., last week published an editorial blasting the worthlessness of a Clinton campaign conference call. A taste:

Clinton operatives held a conference call about efforts the campaign is making to bulk up a social media outreach campaign and plans to build working groups that are – get this – based on specific issues rather than the traditional county-by-county breakdown.

We’ll give you a moment to recover from the impact of such revelatory news.

To keep this style of Clinton coverage going, CNBC Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood has turned in a piece titled, “How’s Hillary doing? Wish we could tell you.”

I’ve been inside Hillary Clinton’s national campaign headquarters in Brooklyn. I’ve talked with “senior officials” about her bid for the White House. They sat in these chairs. Wish I could tell you more. But they said very little. Notice that I typed very little and not “very little,” because under the ground rules of Thursday’s briefing reporters were not allowed to quote their words directly. You’re not missing much.

New York Times Responds To Criticism About Darren Wilson’s Address

Erik Wemple, Nov. 26, 2014, Washington Post

Howard Kurtz has accused the New York Times of a “reckless move” in identifying the street on which Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson resides. “Journalism is full of close calls. This is not one of them. The Times should apologize,” writes Kurtz.

On Monday, the Times published ascoop by Julie Bosman and Campbell Robertson reporting that Wilson had married fellow officer Barbara Spradling in a “quiet wedding” last month. It noted that the two “own a home together” and identified the town and the name of the street.

Sharyl Attkisson’s Computer Intrusions: ‘Worse Than Anything Nixon Ever Did'

Erik Wemple, Oct. 27, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

The intrusions into former CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson’s computers constitute the narrative spine of the reporter’s new book “Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington.” The book starts with not really a word, but a sound: “Reeeeeeeeeee.”

That’s the noise that Attkisson’s Apple computer was making at 3:14 one morning. A Toshiba laptop computer issued by CBS News did the same thing a day earlier, around 4 a.m. All this goes down in October 2012, right in the midst of the Benghazi story.

NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik arrived late to the story of former CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson on Monday’s Morning Edition. He found former NBC reporter Lisa Myers to agree with Attkisson’s point about TV news in the Obama years: “Overall, the mainstream media has been less eager to hold this administration accountable than it was to hold the Bush administration accountable.”

But Folkenflik also turned to how "Detractors say she sees conspiracies too readily." Washington Post media blogger Erik Wemple lashed out at Attkisson’s “act” of leaving CBS News:

ERIK WEMPLE: I don't buy her act. Especially the act of leaving CBS and emerging to basically call out her supervisors and call out CBS News for not having the guts to publish her stories.
That sounds harsh, questioning Attkisson’s sincerity. Wemple then blogged: “Just to clarify: This blog is fine with people calling out their former employers; the problem with Attkisson’s recent media tour, however, is that she hasn’t provided much in the way of specifics to support her claims, which would seem de rigueur for a journalist.”
