U.S. Supreme Court Rules For Muslim Woman Denied Job At Clothing Store

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who sued for discrimination after being denied a sales job at age 17 at an Abercrombie & Fitch Co clothing store in Oklahoma because she wore a head scarf for religious reasons.

In an 8-1 decision in the important religious rights case, the court backed Samantha Elauf, who had been rejected under Abercrombie's sales staff "look policy" after coming to her job interview wearing the head scarf, or hijab, used by many Muslim women.

The decision marked a victory for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency that sued the company on Elauf's behalf after she was turned down in 2008 at an Abercrombie Kids store in Tulsa.

Men Brace For Beard Patrol In ISIS Held Mosul

By Jean-Marc Mojon, Jn. 1, 2015, Yahoo

Baghdad (AFP) - Every time he looks in a mirror, Laith Ahmed is worried. As of Monday, the young Iraqi's hopelessly hairless chin could land him in an Islamic State group jail.

The jihadist group has handed out leaflets in their stronghold of Mosul in recent weeks announcing that full beards become compulsory on June 1 and explaining why shaving is punishable.

"My facial hair is just slow to come out for my age," said the 18-year-old, who like others in this story did not give his real name for fear of retribution.

"I'm scared because they deal ruthlessly with anyone who opposes or ignores their instructions," he told AFP from Mosul, the de facto Iraqi capital of IS's self-proclaimed caliphate.

"My work in a bakery means I have to leave home every day and interact with Daesh militants," he said, using an Arabic acronym for the jihadist group.

Mosul is Iraq's second city and used to have a population of around two million before IS swept in a year ago and made it their main hub.

The Troubling Math Of Muslim Migration

Ian Tuttle, Jan. 13, 2015, National Review

Consider: Said and Chérif Kouachi — the brothers responsible, along with a third accomplice, for the Charlie Hebdo murders — were native Frenchmen whose parents hailed from Algeria. So was Farid Benyettou, the man who drew Chérif Kouachi to radical Islam. So was Mohammed Merah, who shot seven people dead, including three children at Jewish day school, in Toulouse and Montauban in March 2012.

Why Is The Milwaukee Jewish Federation Objecting To A High School Sukkah?

Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin.

By Yair Rosenberg, Oct. 15, 2014, Tablemag.com

During the week-long festival of Sukkot, which is currently being celebrated by Jews around the world, observant Jews are required to eat all of their meals in the Sukkah–the temporary hut from which the holiday takes its name. This can pose problems in professional and educational settings where a Sukkah is not readily available, forcing Jews to choose between having lunch or observing their religion. Thankfully, in recent years, businesses and schools have become sensitive to this concern, and Sukkot can now be found everywhere from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to Google headquarters across the globe.

But one place you won’t find a Sukkah, reports the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, is at Nicolet High School in Wisconsin, despite the fact that Jewish students built one there last year without a problem. The reason? The Milwaukee Jewish Federation objected to the hut as a violation of the “separation of church and state,” and forced it to move off campus.

This stance by the federation, backed by some students and vehemently opposed by others, raises some unsettling questions. If a Muslim pupil sought space in school for his private daily prayers, would the federation advocate against it? If a Jew sought kosher food from the school meal plan–which her family funds with their taxes–would the federation denounce her? If not, why then is the federation acting to prevent observant students from being able to eat meals at school over the holiday of Sukkot?
