Social media erupted in outrage and counter-attacks Friday after US comedian Stephen Colbert used language that mocked Asian Americans in what was intended as an anti-racist jibe.
Colbert, who is liberal but parodies a blustery conservative on his late night talk show, took aim at the Washington Redskins football team whose name is considered offensive by many Native Americans.
Colbert mocked team owner Dan Snyder who has announced a fund to support Native Americans while rejecting calls to change the name.
On Twitter and on his "Colbert Report" show on the Comedy Central network, Colbert said: "I am willing to show the Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever."
Activists voiced outrage at the remark, which played on mocking imitations of East Asian languages. A conversation, under the hashtag #CancelColbert, was near the top of topics trending on Twitter Friday.

  1. Something very wrong about a society when you can't laugh at something a comedian says... on a Comedy network. Or wait, something very wrong about a society that gets its valued news and opinions from a comedian on a Comedy network.

I guess there's just something wrong with society. Who'd a thunk it? Although I've never heard of any "Italian-American" group ever get outraged when something derogatory or racist is said about them.

Maybe we can just get rid of the term "white" and break it down into all it's various Anglo-American or Nordic-American or Mediterannean-American or whatever and then everyonce can be a minority, and then everyone can get special treatment. And so then no one gets special treatment. The way it should be.

Sorry, tangent. Colbert is not really that funny anyway. But they tiptoe the line of being politically and intellectually relevant so they get what they deserve, I suppose.

Or was it that something is wrong with society? I forget. Either way. Probably a lot of both.
