Mike Flynn’s ascension to lead the National Security Council was instantly controversial and short-lived, but it has been a continuing source of frustration for the Trump administration. Barely a week goes by without a scandalous new revelation regarding his conduct, but yesterday’s twin revelations were by far the most disturbing.

On Wednesday night, the New York Times reported that Donald Trump’s transition team was fully aware that Flynn was facing a federal investigation into the suspicion that he was working on behalf of the Turkish government without having registered as a foreign agent. The Trump team made him national security advisor anyway.

Obama Strikes Again

By Caroline B Glick, July 30, 2015 Jerusalem Post

While Israel and much of official Washington remain focused on the deal President Barack Obama just cut with the ayatollahs that gives them $150 billion and a guaranteed nuclear arsenal within a decade, Obama has already moved on – to Syria.

Obama’s first hope was to reach a deal with his Iranian friends that would leave the Assad regime in place. But the Iranians blew him off.

They know they don’t need a deal with Obama to secure their interests. Obama will continue to help them to maintain their power base in Syria though Hezbollah and the remains of the Assad regime without a deal.

Erdogan Says Muslims, Not Columbus, Discovered Americas

AFP, November 15, 2014, Yahoo! News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there.

"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.

"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.

US Sailors Hit By 'Hood Attack' In Turkey

Several dozen members of the nationalist youth group Turkiye Genclik Birligi (Turkish Youth Union/TGB) attacked the sailors in the Eminonu district on the Istanbul waterfront, a popular tourist hub.

They sought to force white sacks onto the heads of the sailors, who were in civilian dress, and chased them across the quayside, shouting "Yankee Go Home" and "Down with US Imperialism".

WaPo: U.S.-led Air War Off To A Difficult Start

By Liz Sly, Oct. 10, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

REYHANLI, Turkey — The U.S.-led air war in Syria has gotten off to a rocky start, with even the Syrian rebel groups closest to the United States turning against it, U.S. ally Turkey refusing to contribute and the plight of a beleaguered Kurdish town exposing the limitations of the strategy.

U.S. officials caution that the strikes are just the beginning of a broader strategy that could take years to carry out. But the anger that the attacks have stirred risks undermining the effort, analysts and rebels say.

The main beneficiary of the strikes so far appears to be President Bashar al-Assad, whose forces have taken advantage of the shift in the military balance to step up attacks against the moderate rebels designated by President Obama as partners of the United States in the war against extremists.

Biden Apologizes To Turkey President In Phone Call

By Liz Sly, Oct. 4, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

SANLIURFA, Turkey — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not known as the kind of leader who readily admits mistakes, and Vice President Biden is well known for his capacity to make them.

So after Biden claimed that Erdogan had acknowledged fault in enabling the flow of foreign fighters across the Turkish border, it was inevitable that a firestorm would ensue.

Biden swiftly responded Saturday to a demand by Erdogan for an apology, saying he regretted the criticism of Turkey and also a suggestion that other U.S. allies had helped facilitate the rise of the extremist Islamic State group in Syria.
