Dylann Roof’s Racist Manifesto: ‘I Have No Choice’

Authorities said Saturday that the man accused of killing nine African Americans in a venerable Charleston, S.C., church left a racist manifesto targeting blacks, Jews and Hispanics on his Web site, a white supremacist broadside that also appears to offer a rationale for the shootings.

The lengthy declaration, loaded with offensive racial characterizations of blacks and others, includes the conclusion that “someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.”

“I have no choice,” states part of that final section, titled “An Explanation.” “I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is [the] most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country.”

As Ebola Declines In Liberia, Health Officials Reassess Response Plans

The rate of new Ebola infections here has declined so sharply in recent weeks that even some of the busiest treatment facilities are now only half-full and officials are reassessing the scale of the response needed to quell the epidemic.

The turnaround has occurred without the provision of a single treatment bed by the U.S. military, which has promised to build 17 Ebola facilities containing 100 beds each across Liberia. Those treatment units will be constructed, said Bill Berger, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Disaster Assistance Response Team here. But the option of initially opening some with as few as 10 beds is “being discussed,” he said.

That would provide people in all parts of the country access to a nearby treatment unit should they become infected in the months to come. And each facility would be constructed so that it could be quickly expanded to as many as 100 beds if the need arises, he said. The United States has spent $360 million so far fighting Ebola in West Africa.

1st Lady Vows Again To Fight Delays In School-Lunch Standards --"We nag because we love"

First lady Michelle Obama vowed again Wednesday to fight attempts to delay enforcement of school lunch nutrition standards, expressing surprise and regret at proposals in Congress that would allow some school districts to seek waivers from requirements that they offer more healthful fare.

“I find myself surprised that we’re here,” Obama told a handful of health and medical reporters in her office, “because just a few years ago, everybody was around the table celebrating this victory, that school nutrition standards had been improved for the first time in 30 years. And everyone was on board.”

“Of course it’s hard” to wean students off pizza, French fries and other high-fat, high-sodium foods that had been staples of school lunches before passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010, she added. “We expected those challenges, particularly among our oldest kids, who’ve grown up eating junk food. But what we did not expect was for the grown-ups to…go along with them and say ‘well this is too hard, it costs too much money. So let’s just stop’.”

Last month, the House Appropriations Committee voted to allow school districts to temporarily opt out of school dietary requirements. Some school districts have complained that requiring whole wheat products and fruits and vegetables, in the name of reducing obesity among children and teens, has prompted older students to shun school lunches and breakfasts and is costing the districts money. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture to give waivers to any school district whose lunch programs saw a net loss over six months.
