BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- When Army Sgt. Patrick Hart decided a decade ago that he would not serve in the war in Iraq, he expected to follow the same path as thousands of American war resisters during the Vietnam era and take refuge across the border.

But after five years of wrangling with the Canadian immigration system, he came back to the U.S. - and ended up in a military prison.

The country that once welcomed war resisters has developed a much different reputation during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan: Supporters say no U.S. soldier who has sought legal residence in Canada, either as a refugee or on humanitarian grounds, has been successful.

Condoleezza Rice slammed the Obama administration’s handling of Iraq and America’s lack of strength on the world stage, saying that “nobody listens” when the U.S. isn’t leading.

“What we’re seeing is that when the United States steps back and speaks softly, nobody listens,” the former secretary of state said in an interview with Fox News that aired Monday.

“Americans also don’t like the world that they get when the United States is not deeply engaged and deeply involved,” Rice continued, pointing to beheadings carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the recent attack in the Canadian parliament and tensions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

GOP Wave Could Turn Spigot On Keystone XL Pipeline

The Republican wave Tuesday could bring a gusher of oil down from Canada, as GOP gains in the Senate appeared to give backers of the Keystone XL pipeline a filibuster-proof majority.

The long-delayed final phase of the tube, envisioned as bringing oil from Alberta’s tar sands and North Dakota's Bakken formation oil fields to Gulf Coast refineries, moved a major step forward as Republicans took control of the Senate. While Canadian oil is already piped into the U.S. via the existing, circuitous portion of the pipeline, the final phase would create a nearly straight shot from Alberta to Houston.

Canada Won't Issue Visas To Resident Of Countries With Widespread Ebola

In a move that puts Canada at odds with the World Health Organization, the federal government said Friday it is suspending the issuance of visas for residents and nationals of countries with "widespread and persistent-intense transmission" of Ebola virus disease. As well, work on permanent residence applications for people from the affected countries is also being suspended.

The stress on countries with widespread transmission provides an out for the United States, which currently still has at least one active Ebola case within its borders. At present only three countries meet the definition of widespread and persistent Ebola transmission: Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Leaked DHS Report Reveals 13 Foreign Suspected Terrorists Illegally Entered Canada from US

At least 13 men from Africa with terrorist-related records illegally entered Canada from the U.S. since 2010, according to a leaked Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Intelligence Information Report exclusively obtained by Breitbart Texas. The data pertains only to one small region of the vast U.S.-Canadian border. The report reveals that as of September 9, 2014, there have been 155 encounters in the area “involving 344 ethnic Somalis, 21 ethnic Ethiopians, five ethnic Kenyans, two ethnic Djiboutians, two ethnic Nigerians, and one ethnic Sudanese and Congolese subjects who have attempted or succeeded in entering Canada illegally near the Pembina, ND Port of Entry (POE) since June 2010. These encounters INCLUDE 13 SUBJECTS WITH TERRORIST-RELATED RECORDS [Emphasis Added] who have utilized this method of circumventing designated POEs.”

The report lists several ethnic Somalis who have U.S. addresses and official Alien Registration Numbers issued by the U.S. government, who the report indicates are either included, or should be included, into the Terrorist Screening Database. The subjects’ addresses span from Southern California to Ohio.

 An Ontario mosque is coming under fire for using young Muslim children to conduct mock beheadings in a school play.

 Video footage of the Islamic Jaffari Center in Thornhill, Ontario, shows children as young as 4 years old watching and learning to conduct beheadings in a play that reportedly took place two years ago.

 The video was featured on the Canada’s Sun News Network television program, “Byline with Brian Lilley.”

 A young boy can be seen sitting on the floor as another boy approaches him from behind with a machete.

 At the end of the play, the boy playing the part of the executioner announces, “Here are the heads.”

Canada Revokes Passports Of Citizens Who Join IS

The Canadian government has begun invalidating the passports of citizens who have left the country to join Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq, the National Post has revealed.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said his department had also revoked the passports of several Canadians who had not yet left the country but who had intended to enlist in the militant group, the paper reported.

Mr. Alexander would not disclose the number of passports that have been revoked but said there were “multiple cases.” The government says about 30 Canadians are with extremist groups in Syria and 130 are active elsewhere, the National Post reported.

“Yes, I think it’s safe to say that there are cases of revocation of passports involving people who’ve gone to Syria and Iraq already,” he said. “I just don’t want to get into the numbers, but multiple cases.”

The action means the Canadian fighters’ passports are no longer valid and cannot be used to return to Canada or travel elsewhere.

Pressure is mounting for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to step down after a new video surfaced showing him with what may be crack cocaine.

Ford announced Wednesday that he will take a leave of absence and seek treatment for alcohol problems. Despite widespread criticism, he is running for re-election in October.

The Globe and Mail newspaper said it viewed a video from a self-professed drug dealer showing Ford taking a drag from a pipe early Saturday in his sister's basement.

News reports of an earlier video of Ford smoking crack first surfaced last May.

City Council member Gloria Lindsay Luby said she wants Ford to step down immediately. "Just a matter of days is not enough to get over any severe addiction," she said.

"When I travel and people ask where I am from, I don't want to say I am from Toronto," said Luby, who has been on the council since 1985. "It's embarrassing. It never stops. He is a dinosaur and the way he looks at women is disgusting."

The Toronto Sun said Wednesday that it had obtained an audio recording of Ford at a bar making lewd remarks about council member Karen Stintz, who is also running for mayor, and about his wife.

"Rob Ford's comments are disgusting," Stintz wrote on her website. "Rob Ford is not Toronto. Toronto is tired of City Hall being gripped by this sad mess."

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly will fill in for Ford, taking over his limited role as mayor. The city council suspended some of the mayor's duties and powers for the rest of his term when he refused to resign after a string of incidents in 2013, from public drunkenness to an appearance in another video that showed him threatening "murder" in an incoherent rant.

In a statement late Wednesday,Ford said: "I have a problem with alcohol and the choices I have made while under the influence. I have struggled with this for some time."
