‘The View’ May Cut Rosie Perez, Nicolle Wallace in Latest Revamp (EXCLUSIVE)

ABC executives are finalizing a plan to reboot “The View” next fall, for the second consecutive year, with a flurry of changes that could include the departure of at least one of its regular hosts, Varietyhas learned.

While moderator Whoopi Goldberg will remain as the face of the struggling daytime talker, the future of two of her co-hosts, Nicolle Wallace and Rosie Perez, is in doubt. One or both women could be dropped because network execs are underwhelmed with their contributions to the show’s signature Hot Topics segment, which is expected to shift focus permanently toward more lighthearted celebrity fluff.

The changes come as instability behind-the-scenes at the show continues, say insiders, which probably isn’t what Disney/ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood was hoping for when heshifted oversight of the program from ABC’s daytime division to its ABC News unit as part of a previous reboot effort that brought in Wallace and Perez last September.

Why Gay Movie Stars Are Staying Locked In The Closet

There’s a vast and growing list of prominent gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender media and entertainment figures — just don’t count movie stars among them.

Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres, Caitlyn Jenner and Neil Patrick Harris have kicked open the closet door with little to no damage to their careers. In some cases, they’ve found themselves more in demand after revealing their sexual preferences or gender identification.

Yet there’s one glass ceiling that remains stubbornly resistant to cracks.

No A-list film actor has yet to come out publicly while at the pinnacle of his or her career. Sure, Jodie Foster gave an elliptical Golden Globes speech about being a lesbian, and out actors Ian McKellen and Zachary Quinto helped anchor the “X-Men” and “Lord of the Rings” series, and the rebooted “Star Trek” films, respectively. Yet despite their prodigious talents, none of them has the power to secure a greenlight on their name alone.

In some cases, business concerns, not personal comfort, lead to silence.

Michael Moore: Gay Marriage Decision Ends Bad Week for 'Angry White Guys'

For Michael Moore, the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage provides the perfect capstone to a week that’s seen justices uphold the Affordable Care Act and South Carolina lawmakers call for the Confederate flag to be taken down at the state Capitol.

“It’s a very bad day for the angry white guy,” Moore joked during an interview with Variety shortly after gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states. “Already this week we’ve seen the Supreme Court uphold semi-socialized medicine that was put forward by a black president. We’ve seen the Confederate Flag being taken down at Walmart and at Nascar. Now they’re going to have to live in a world where two people of the same gender, that love each other, can get married.”

Moore, the documentary filmmaker behind “Fahrenheit 911″ and “Bowling for Columbine,” marveled at the speed with which attitudes on gay rights have changed. He noted that in 2004 gay marriage was a wedge issue during the presidential race and that President Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, two proponents of marriage equality, opposed same-sex unions when they ran for the White House in 2008.

Hours after delivering a statement on the shooting massacre of nine people at an historic church in Charleston, S.C., President Obama and a group of entertainment industry donors had a lengthy discussion about the roots of gun violence in the first of two Hollywood-centric fundraisers in Los Angeles on Thursday, according to an attendee who was present.

About 30 people attended the event at the Pacific Palisades home of Chuck Lorre, executive producer of “Two and a Half Men.” Tickets for what was billed as an intimate discussion with the president sold for up to $33,400 each, with proceeds going to the Democratic National Committee.

Among those attending were Kiefer Sutherland, Matthew Perry, Conan O’Brien, UTA’s Jay Sures, Bob Broder, Tennis Channel CEO Ken Solomon and writer-producer James Burrows.

The attendee described the meeting, which lasted an hour and 15 minutes, as different from other events in that it offered an opportunity for Obama to have a “long, thoughtful” and serious discussion about issues, including gun violence and his presidency, in a much more “macro” sense than in other forums. The discussion about gun violence touched on gun laws, mental health and race, among other factors, the attendee said. Obama talked about being an optimist, especially about the country’s place in history.

In a Tuesday article, Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein slammed NBC for its series of exclusive interviews with ex-NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal: “...the most absurd aspect of NBC News’ Dolezal Day was how straight-faced its interviewers sat as their subject grew loonier the more she spoke.” Dolezal sat down for a live interview with co-host Matt Lauer on Tuesday’s Today, a taped interview with MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry, and another taped interview with Today co-host Savannah Guthrie that was aired on NBC Nightly News that evening.

Wallenstein observed:

Lauer and Harris-Perry somehow didn’t ask a single question that really challenged Dolezal, who was given free rein to self-mythologize a story that even the most sympathetic observer would have to concede is just begging for some tough questions. Instead, it was as if the sheer peculiarity of an eloquent woman professing to be black despite being born white had knocked them so off-balance that they might have been better off just standing there slack-jawed.

ABC Accidentally Shows LeBron James’ Penis During NBA Finals

 ABC got a little too close to LeBron James on Thursday night. Prior to the start of Game 4 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, James adjusted his shorts during a team huddle, briefly exposing his penis on live television.

 Viewers quickly took to Twitter to talk about the incident.

 Ten years ago, nearly 90 million people watched Justin Timberlake briefly expose Janet Jackson’s breast during a halftime performance. The FCC fined CBS a record $550,000 for the flashing, which was later voided by the Supreme Court in a long and very public indecency battle.

Film Review: ‘Tomorrowland’

In his Pixar triumphs “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille,” writer-director Brad Bird proved himself not just a wizardly storyteller but also an ardent champion of excellence — of intelligence, creativity and nonconformity — in every arena of human (and rodent) accomplishment. All the more disappointing, then, that the forces of mediocrity have largely prevailed over “Tomorrowland,” a kid-skewing adventure saga that, for all its initial narrative intrigue and visual splendor, winds up feeling like a hollow, hucksterish Trojan horse of a movie — the shiny product of some smiling yet sinister dimension where save-the-world impulses and Disney mass-branding strategies collide. 

 A sort of “Interstellar Jr.” in which the fate of humanity hinges on our ability to nurture young hearts and minds, the picture runs heavier on canned inspirationalism than on actual inspiration, which won’t necessarily keep it from drawing a hefty summer audience with its family-friendly elements, topnotch production values, Imax rollout, endless tie-in potential and a top-billed George Clooney.

There’s something to be said, of course, for a big-budget studio entertainment sly enough to retain a proper sense of mystery over its story and concept; much of the early buzz around “Tomorrowland” has swirled around the question of what it’s about — and exactly how much it has to do with its namesake neighborhood at Disneyland. With one mercifully brief, tongue-in-cheek exception, scribes Bird and Damon Lindelof (who together conceived the story with Jeff Jensen) avoid exploiting such theme-park attractions as Space Mountain, Star Tours and the dearly departed PeopleMover; if anything, their vision of Tomorrowland draws more heavily on Epcot Center, the ultimate representation of Walt Disney’s guiding belief in science and technology as a force for good in the world.

Sony Cancels Theatrical Release For ‘The Interview’ on Christmas

In announcing the decision to cancel the holiday debut, Sony also hit back at the hackers who threatened movie theaters and moviegoers and who have terrorized the studio and its employees for weeks.

“Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like,” the statement reads.

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s” Larry Wilmore has been tapped to host “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore,” a new Comedy Central show to air in the 11:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday timeslot currently occupied by soon-to-be “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert.

“The Minority Report” premieres in January and promises to “offer a comedic look at news, current events and pop culture from unique perspectives not typically on display in late night television.” It was created by Jon Stewart and will be produced by Stewart’s Busboy Prods., with Stewart and Wilmore serving as exec producers.

The selection of the African-American Wilmore breaks up the white-male homogeneity to most of latenight TV. The lack of diversity in the latenight talk-variety show arena has been in focus in recent months amid the generational shift of hosts at NBC (where Jimmy Fallon took over “The Tonight Show” from Jay Leno in February) and CBS (where Colbert is to succeed David Letterman next year).

“We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Jon Stewart and Busboy Productions, and are looking forward to the world getting to know Larry Wilmore even better. He’s a spectacular talent in front of and behind the camera,” said Michele Ganeless, Comedy Central prexy. “‘The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore’ follows in the Comedy Central tradition – bringing new perspectives to the day’s events and breaking ground in the world of late night television.”

Bryan Singer, Gary Goddard--New Sex Abuse Lawsuit --More allegations

 “X-Men: Days of Future Past” director Bryan Singer and Gary Goddard are the targets of another lawsuit, filed by an anonymous British teenager who alleges they sexually assaulted him.

 The suit is filed by Jeff Herman, the same lawyer who has filed four suits in the past two weeks. According to the Daily Beast, Herman intends to announce the suit at 2 p.m. Monday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. According to the suit, Goddard used social media to contact the teen when he was 14, telling him he was good looking and that Goddard could help him in Hollywood.

 The suit contends that nude webcam sessions began and, when the teenage was 15 or 16, Goddard insisted that they lay on a bed and kiss naked. When the teenager was 17, the suit alleges that at a “Superman” after-party, Singer had sex with him, despite his refusal. Reportedly, when the teenager refused, Goddard brought a “large, musclebound man” who smacked him around.

 According to the suit, Singer called him the next morning to apologize for “last night.” It reads that the plaintiff has only recently become cognizant of the “psychological and emotional injuries, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life” as a result of the alleged sexual abuse.

 Bryan Singer’s lawyer Marty Singer (no relation) told the Daily Beast that the allegations are “totally untrue.”

 “After the substance of Mr. Herman’s previous defamatory and fabricated filing in Hawaii was disproved based on unassailable evidence, Mr. Herman’s desperation has led him to fabricate these new anonymous accusations against Mr. Singer, which we will also prove to be completely false,” Marty Singer said.

Variety: IRS Grants Non-Profit Status to Hollywood Conservative Group Friends Of Abe--Leftist Hollywood=1/3rd of Axis of Indoctrination

Hollywood’s largest fellowship of conservatives and right-of-center independents, Friends of Abe, has been granted 501(c)3 non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service, about three years after it first sought the designation. 


Jeremy Boreing, lead organizer for the group who has been serving as its executive director, said their attorney received word late on Friday that they had been granted the status. 

The organization has operated as a fellowship for conservatives in an industry with a leftward tilt. Launched almost 10 years ago, it has included such figures as Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight and Gary Sinise among its members, and a roster of speakers that has included Paul Ryan, Herman Cain, Eric Cantor and, most recently, Ted Cruz.
