Mia Love On CNN: Hosts Try To Make Win About Race--Mia Not Having It

Conservative candidate Mia Love made history on Tuesday by becoming the first black female Republican elected to Congress. While it’s a major milestone, Love hit back against suggestions that her election victory was the result of her race or gender during a Wednesday CNN appearance.

CNN host John Berman asked Love a seemingly back-handed question aimed at Republicans regarding why it took so long for the party to elect a black woman. Love was clear that her campaign and victory had “nothing to do with race.”

Love was previously the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah. She was born in Brooklyn to Haitian parents, and moved to Utah in 1998. Love eventually became a Mormon, then moved to Utah in 1998.

Mia Love defeated Doug Owens to become the first black Republican congresswoman in history [via BuzzFeed]. Love will represent the 4th congressional district of Utah, where she's spent most of her life (she moved there with her family from Brooklyn in 1998). Love is Mormon, like the majority of Utah residents, and has called herself a "nightmare" for democrats.

Utah Woman Blames Race For Fatal Shooting Of Her Son By Saratoga Springs PD

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – A woman has criticized police in the Utah County city of Saratoga Springs over the fatal shooting of her 22-year-old son, saying she believes the outcome would have been different had he not been black.

Susan Hunt of Saratoga Springs said her family wants answers about what happened leading up to Wednesday's shooting by officers of her son, Darrien Hunt.

On Saturday afternoon, law enforcement authorities issued a statement saying that the man lunged at officers with a sword.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/XfgtTx) that police say they were called about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a "suspicious" man walking near businesses along Redwood Road while carrying a "Samurai-type sword."

"When the officers made contact with Mr. Hunt, he brandished the sword and lunged toward the officers with the sword, at which time Mr. Hunt was shot," Utah County Chief Deputy Attorney Tim Taylor said in a statement.

Before the statement was issued, Susan Hunt told the Deseret News: "They killed my son because he's black. No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he's running away.

"Those stupid cops thought they had to murder over a toy. This is my baby. This is my family. And they ruined my family."

Crips In Utah: Gang Culture Invades An Unlikely Turf --Utah?!

Just before gunfire rang out last month in a heavily guarded federal courtroom, Hema Katoa saw the defendant suddenly rise from his chair and charge the man in the witness box who was testifying against him.

It was a stunning development that played out in full view of the judge and jury on the first day of a racketeering conspiracy trial involving an accused gang member who would ultimately collapse on the courtroom floor, fatally wounded by a U.S. marshal.

A month later, the incident is shining a harsh spotlight on the unusual origins of a criminal gang that continues to thrive in a most unlikely place — Salt Lake City — and raises new questions about the extraordinary strategies law enforcement officials are employing to combat the group.

The weight of the morning's trauma did not fully register until hours later, when Katoa learned that his nephew, part of Salt Lake City's tightly knit Tongan community who had been swept into the ranks of a brutal affiliate of the Crip street gang, was dead.

Since Siale Angilau's dramatic courtroom death, Katoa's days are a mix of grief and the ongoing struggle to "protect'' other Pacific Islander children — many ironically brought by families from gang-infested Southern California neighborhoods to be closer to their Mormon faith — from sliding into the ranks of the Tongan Crip Gang.

The courtroom shooting is even more difficult to reconcile with Salt Lake City, home to the Mormon church and the gateway to some of America's most exclusive ski resorts. Yet the presence of Angilau's so-called TCG has been an unfortunate reality for more than two decades.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota has recorded the highest personal income growth among all states for the sixth time in the last seven years.
Statistics released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis indicated that the state's personal income grew 7.6 percent in 2013. Utah ranked behind North Dakota with a 4 percent growth.
The federal report tied the state's income to various business sectors including agriculture, construction and energy development.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the report shows that the state's efforts to create jobs and career opportunities are getting results.
The national average of growth declined last year. The bureau reports the national average as 2.6 percent in 2013, down from 4.2 percent in 2012.
Earnings grew in 2013 in every industry nationwide except civilian federal government, which fell $6.7 billion.
