"Rick Perry Asks Black Voters To Give GOP A Second Chance"

Washington (CNN) Rick Perry on Thursday said the Republican Party lost some of its "moral legitimacy" by not vying for the black vote in past elections, adding that the GOP has "much to do" to earn the trust of African-Americans.

Perry, the former Texas governor and 2016 presidential hopeful, used a half-hour speech at the National Press Club in Washington to try and recast blacks' concerns as going beyond race, pitching his much-touted jobs record in Austin as the most enticing message to woo skeptical black voters.

Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-New York) comments on Wednesday about Democrats’ misguided focus on health care in President Barack Obama’s first term prompted backlash from top Democrats and left-leaning groups, who accused him of being politically craven.

At a speech before the National Press Club in Washington on Tuesday, Schumer said Democrats made a mistake by entering into a fight over health care after they passed the 2009 economic stimulus.

Jeh Johnson: U.S. Could Face New Surge Of Illegals

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson warned Wednesday that the country could face another spike in illegal immigration as the U.S. economy picks up and as seasonal patterns change, though he said they have made major progress in combatting the surge of illegal immigrant children that wrong-footed his department earlier this year.

“We’re determined that we need to do more ourselves for border security,” Mr. Johnson said in a speech at the National Press Club sponsored by Democratic group NDN. “I’m concerned about the possibility of another rise in illegal migration.”
