A man who was shopping at a suburban New Orleans mall on Christmas Eve was shot to death at close range and a suspect was in custody, police said.

The incident happened around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, less than two hours before the Oakwood Center mall in Gretna was scheduled to close for the holiday, said Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand.

Final US Senate Race Like A Louisiana Laugher--Landrieu Down 16 Pts

Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu is trailing her Republican challenger by a giant 16-point margin in a runoff for one of Louisiana's two U.S. Senate seats, according to poll results obtained by MailOnline.

The survey, commissioned by GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy's campaign, was leaked to media in order to fire a shot over the senator's bow and send a signal to energy lobbyists that her ship is taking on water.

Landrieu has lined up for what Republican Capitol Hill aides are calling the 'Hail Mary XL,' a legislative strategy to save her Senate seat by winning a vote to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring 700,000 barrels of oil daily from the Canadian province of Alberta to the Gulf coast.

In a series of TV ad buys totaling upwards to $330,000 and appearing on both broadcast and cable TV, Guillory's Free At Last PAC aired ads during major sporting events over the weekend before Election Day. Ads were aired in all three states including his home state of Louisiana where Guillory serves as a State Senator.

In Arkansas where Democrat incumbent Mark Pryor is seeking a third term in the Senate, the Free At Last PAC ad was featured during the nail-biting Mississippi State/Arkansas game. Senator Pryor's father held the same seat years before him and Guillory calls for the "Pryor dynasty" to come to an end in the Natural State.

Opelousas, La. — To kill a bear in single combat, you’ve just got to avoid its claws and teeth. That’s the first lesson Republican state senator Elbert Guillory, famous for urging black voters to join him in leaving the Democratic party, imparted over lunch at the kind of Louisiana restaurant that has crawfish enchiladas on the menu.

“Get in close,” inside of the paws and under its chin, he advises anyone confronted with such a challenge. The 70-year-old Guillory, wearing a three-piece suit and working on a cup of gumbo, doesn’t look like a bear-killer, but he offers this tactical advice without a hint of self-consciousness.

Guillory likes telling stories, especially the one in which a bear attacks while he and his then-young son camped in western Maryland years ago. Guillory says he killed it with a large knife.

This particular story is less surprising coming from someone looking, this election season, to wrestle a different kind of animal. Guillory wants to drive a wedge between African Americans and Louisiana’s vulnerable incumbent, Senator Mary Landrieu. Guillory has endorsed Representative Bill Cassidy (R., La.) for senator, and, though Democrats have had a lock on the African-American vote for decades, he hopes to help Cassidy receive 15 percent of it in November.

“Unfortunately, the black community over the last few decades, as a community, we have put all our eggs in one basket,” Guillory tells National Review Online. “For me, it’s not so much about helping Cassidy as it is helping my community. If I can get a United States senator who understands the issues and will address those issues, then I will have been successful for Louisiana.”

Mary Landrieu Replaces Campaign Manager

In what appears to be a significant October campaign shakeup, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu is replacing her campaign manager and bringing on her former chief of staff as a senior adviser.

The Democrat has pushed Adam Sullivan out of the manager role and replaced him with Ryan Berni, who ran her brother Mitch’s reelection campaign as New Orleans mayor. Berni is a former aide to Clintonista and Louisianan James Carville.

Polls show Landrieu falling short of the 50 percent she needs to avoid a December runoff, and Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy has a slight lead in head-to-head matchups.

“Like any of the Senator’s winning campaigns, we are tightening our senior strategy team and bringing on some of her long time advisers to help out during the last month of the race,” Landrieu spokesman Fabien Levy emailed POLITICO.

It could be one of those moments when a political career careens into a great big “Dead End” sign…when the needle of impending electoral doom swings into the red zone of “massive meltdown.”

In a picture that’s gone viral, embattled Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu is seen helping to force beer down the throat of a football fan at a tailgate gathering. Apparently, Landrieu, who is fighting for her political life in a very tight reelection campaign, must have thought she could win the hearts and votes of a certain hardcore party crowd when she helped a guy do a keg stand before the LSU-Mississippi State football game.

Bobby Jindal Suing Feds Over Common Core

Gov. Bobby Jindal planned to file a lawsuit Wednesday against the Obama administration, accusing it of illegally manipulating federal grant money and regulations to force states to adopt the Common Core education standards.

The U.S. Department of Education has used a $4.3 billion grant program and federal policy waivers to encourage states to adopt uniform education standards and testing. The Republican governor says that "effectively forces states down a path toward a national curriculum" in violation of the state sovereignty clause in the Constitution and federal laws that prohibit national control of education content.

A draft copy of the lawsuit was provided to The Associated Press by the governor's office. Jindal planned to file it Wednesday in the federal court based in Baton Rouge.

Jindal, one of the leading voices opposing Common Core, expressed his views on the program in a Newsmax exclusive, "Saving America's Students from the Federal 'Education Octopus.'"

Common Core is supposed to ensure that students in all states meet consistent expectations. But Jindal sees it as yet another federal incursion analogous to healthcare reform.

The legal challenge puts Jindal, who is considering a 2016 presidential bid, at the forefront of a dispute between conservatives and President Barack Obama, bolstering the governor's profile on the issue as he's trying to court conservative voters nationwide.

Pushback Continues: States Grow Increasingly Wary of Common Core --Dissent comes from left AND right

Common Core is on the ropes. More and more states are pulling back from the national standards as the 2014–15 school year implementation deadline looms near.

In Louisiana, Governor Bobby Jindal (R)—formerly a Common Core supporter—is now encouraging the legislature to remove the state from the Common Core aligned Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for Colleges and Careers (PARCC) test. And if they don’t act, he will.

Jindal’s new stance comes after eight members of the Louisiana State House of Representatives sent him a letter, informing him of his prerogative to opt out of the standards and encouraging him to do so. As The New Orleans Advocate reported:
"Gov. Bobby Jindal said Monday that a gubernatorial order for the state to drop controversial Common Core tests is a ‘very viable option’ if state lawmakers fail to act. Jindal made the comment in response to a letter from eight House members who said the governor can opt the state out of the exams and should do that… ‘We believe you have the authority, as governor, under the 2010 PARCC memorandum of understanding, to opt out of the consortium,’ state Rep. Brett Geymann, (R–Lake Charles), and seven other legislators wrote."

Freshman GOP Rep. Vance McAllister of Louisiana — who ran for office as a principled conservative Christian — has been caught on video in a romantic encounter with a woman believed to be on his congressional staff just before Christmas.

The Ouachita Citizen, a newspaper based in West Monroe, La., posted a Dec. 23 surveillance video purportedly from inside McAllister’s district office in Monroe.

The video shows McAllister kissing a woman identified by the newspaper as a congressional staffer for the first-term lawmaker. Federal payroll records show she is a part-time aide who began working for McAllister the day after he won his seat last year.

McAllister won a special election on Nov. 16 to replace Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-La.). McAllister won in the heavily Republican district by playing up his conservative credentials, including his Christian faith and his 16-year marriage.

McAllister’s Washington office door was locked Monday. He issued a statement in the afternoon apologizing for the incident and asking for forgiveness.

Felons cannot vote in the United States, but a record can’t stop someone from running for a seat in Congress. Ex-Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards might be the latest lawmaker to hit the campaign trail after a scandal, but he is hardly the first.
Welcome to U.S. News’ "Convicts for Congress: a brief history."
Former Rep. Mel Reynolds, D-Ill.: He was a rising star in the Democratic Party, a Harvard graduate and former Rhodes Scholar when he won his bid for Congress in 1992. However, Rep. Mel Reynolds’ congressional career was brief. In 1994, just a few months before his first run for re-election, the congressman was accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage campaign volunteer. While the scandal overshadowed his race, Reynolds denied the charges and kept campaigning. He ran unopposed for his seat and won re-election. A year later, Reynolds was convicted of obstruction of justice, sexual assault and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned from the House of Representatives and served more than seven years in prison on the sex abuse charges and a series of fraud convictions. President Bill Clinton commuted the end of his fraud sentence.
