Washington (AFP) - Both sides of the US political divide are defending Malia Obama's right to privacy after a video went viral showing the eldest daughter of former president Barack Obama apparently smoking.

Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump were among the numerous defenders of Malia, 19, on Twitter after the video on Friday seemed to show her blowing smoke rings in a bathroom.

A College Balks At Hillary Clinton’s Fee, So Books Chelsea For $65,000 Instead

When the University of Missouri at Kansas City was looking for a celebrity speaker to headline its gala luncheon marking the opening of a women’s hall of fame, one of the names that came to mind was Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But when the former secretary of state’s representatives quoted a fee of $275,000, officials at the public university balked. “Yikes!” one e-mailed another.

So the school booked the next best option: her daughter, Chelsea.

The university paid $65,000 for Chelsea Clinton’s brief appearance Feb. 24, 2014, a demonstration of the celebrity appeal and marketability that the former and possibly second-time first daughter employs on behalf of her mother’s presidential campaign and family’s global charitable empire.

More than 500 pages of e-mails, contracts and other internal documents obtained by The Washington Post from the university under Missouri public record laws detail the school’s long courtship of the Clintons.

Chelsea Clinton: Female President 'Absolutely' Important

By Jesse Byrnes, Apr.12, 2015, The Hill

Chelsea Clinton is reflecting on her desire to see women assume positions of leadership as her mother is expected to launch a presidential campaign this weekend.

"When you ask about the importance of having a woman president, absolutely it's important," Chelsea Clinton said in an interview with Elle magazine, citing the symbolism of whom society elevates.

"One of our core values in this country is that we are the land of equal opportunity, but when equal hasn't yet included gender, there is a fundamental challenge there that, I believe, having our first woman president — whenever that is — will help resolve," Clinton said, adding it would made a "substantive difference."

A new survey suggests President Obama is just as unpopular as former President George W. Bush.

Just over half of those polled, 51 percent, have an unfavorable view of Obama, and 51 percent currently feel the same about Bush, according to a CNN/ORC International poll released Thursday.

Forty-seven percent of the public has a favorable rating of Obama, which CNN said is a new low for him, and roughly identical to Bush’s favorable rating of 46 percent.

Days before leaving the White House in January 2009, Bush had a favorable rating of 35 percent. After the 2008 election, Obama had a 78 percent favorable rating.

Bush and Obama now have lower favorable ratings than their two predecessors. Nearly 70 percent have a positive view of former President Bill Clinton and nearly 60 percent have a favorable view of former President George H.W. Bush.

Hillary Clinton’s favorable ratings have slipped since she left the State Department in 2013. After her departure, 67 percent viewed her positively. Fifty-five percent view her that way now, the new poll found.

Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, joins her dad in having a higher rating than her mom, with nearly 60 percent holding a favorable view.

The poll surveyed 1,003 adults between May 29 and June 1 and has a 3 percentage point margin of error.
