Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's position toward the 2003 Iraq war is exactly the one GOP presidential campaign rival Jeb Bush should have firmly taken – and stuck to, according to talk show host Larry Elder.

In a panel discussion with "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV Monday, the Newsmax contributor defended the Florida Republican's position – outlined in a tough interview Sunday with Fox News' Chris Wallace.

Rubio Jumps To Top Of GOP Pack

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is the new leader atop the Republican presidential field, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Fifteen percent of GOP voters surveyed for a new Quinnipiac University poll said that Rubio would be their first choice if the 2016 primary were held today — a 10-point jump from the survey at the beginning of last month.

In the latest poll, 13 percent backed his onetime political mentor, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and 11 percent said they would support Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. In the March survey, Walker and Bush led with 18 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

Unlike Rubio, Walker and Bush have not officially announced that they will seek the nomination, but have been hiring campaign advisers and courting donors.

Asked who they would vote for if their favored candidate was not in the race, Bush and Walker supporters named Rubio more than any other candidate.

In a hypothetical general election match-up with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rubio garnered 43 percent to her 45 percent. Other Republicans fared worse against Clinton.

Is the term "illegal alien" racist? What is the appropriate term to describe the status of those who broke our laws either by illegally entering or over-staying the time allowed under a student, work or other temporary permit?

Cindy Rodriguez of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists considers the term "illegal" to be a pejorative, used by "reactionary commentators and politicians" and "radio talk shows."

"If you can control the words people use," Rodriguez says, "you can frame the issue... That's how propaganda works. Repeat the words continually until it reshapes the way people think."

Attorney Gloria Allred represented gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman's Mexican-born housekeeper. Allred said the term "alien" should apply only to those "from outer space."

Words matter.

The term "illegal alien" does not only apply, of course, to persons of Mexican or Hispanic heritage. "Illegal alien" is a race- and ethnicity-neutral term. The U.S. Code defines an "alien" as "any person not a citizen or national of the United States."

The word "alien" appears numerous times in the U.S. Code and is applied to those who live here legally (tourists, resident aliens, students on visas), as well as to those who live here illegally.

The term "illegal alien" is used throughout U.S. law in statutes and court cases - all referring to non-U.S. citizens who illegally enter and/or unlawfully stay here. The code painstakingly defines the procedures to grant "immigrant status" to an alien - a privilege reserved for those who follow the law.

Guess what term doesn't appear in U.S. immigration law? "Illegal immigrant."

People like Rodriguez worry - not without reason - that terms like "illegal alien" will harden attitudes and cause voters to oppose policies like the Dream Act, allowing driver's licenses for those here illegally and bilingual education. But changing words to advance one's political agenda does not make it right or fair. Calling people "racist" for using the term "illegal alien" to distinguish between those here legally and illegally is, well, racist.

Words matter. Words like "racist" and "anti-Hispanic" are used to attack people who raise fair questions about the costs and problems associated with "illegal aliens." This shuts down debate. When amnesty opponent Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a Hispanic son of Cuban exiles, is called "anti-Hispanic" by the CEO of Univision, we have a problem.

Debate gets shuts down when "comprehensive immigration reform" proponents call others "racist" for rejecting the politically correct term "illegal immigrant" or "undocumented worker." What is wrong with the legally accurate and more precise term "illegal alien"?

Guess that makes me a racist - and Sen. Rubio a Tio Taco.

(Newsmax) – The jihadist ISIS insurgents aren’t just hell-bent on dominating Iraq, their “expansionist ideology” will eventually lead to an attack on the United States, Sen. Marco Rubio says.

In his chilling assessment for Time.com Friday, the Florida Republican, a member of the Senate’s Foreign Relations and Select Intelligence Committees, says President Barack Obama was right to use military force to protect America’s diplomats and military personnel in Iraq.

“But this should not be our only goal,” he wrote.

“If we do not continue to take decisive action against ISIS now, it will be not just Iraqis or Syrians who continue to suffer, it will likely be Americans, as a result of a terrorist attack on the U.S. homeland or on our personnel overseas,” he warns.

“America was faced with the same choice President Clinton faced in the 1990s during the emergence of al Qaeda: take action now, or we will be forced to take action in the future.”

Rubio noted recent history shows “terrorist groups, once established, use safe havens to launch attacks on the United States and our interests.”

“We ignore this history at our own peril,” he warns.

The extremist ISIS, which emerged from al Qaeda, has been tormenting religious minorities in Iraq, even as they’ve seized bridges, dams and other infrastructure Iraqi towns and communities rely on.
