CNN's Original Programs Draw Younger Viewers Despite Network's Poor Overall Ratings

Randy Hall, Dec. 27, 2014, Newsbusters

The median age of an average CNN viewer during prime time fell from 60 to 58 years old.

At the same time, states Reuters reporter Rick Kissel, the Fox News Channel held steady at a median age of 68 while MSNBC skewed slightly older this year (61 versus 60 last year).

'Liberal Lions' Stewart & Colbert Slammed For Hypocritical Lack Of Diversity In Guests

Jon Stewart / Stephen Colbert
By Randy Hall, Aug. 29, 2014, Newsbusters.org

We've all heard the never-ending cry from liberal Democrats that conservative Republicans dodge diversity by favoring white males as hosts and guests on their television programs to the detriment of people in such groups as women and blacks.

However, in an article on the Reuters news service, writer Chloe Angyal charges that such “liberal lions” as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of the Comedy Central cable channel are obviously hypocritical regarding this topic since “their guest rosters more closely resemble a GOP national convention than they do the liberal vision of a diverse and equitable America.”

After describing the past few months as “one of the most news-heavy summers in decades,” Angyal stated that “Ukraine, Gaza and now Ferguson have gripped the attention of those who cover and consume the news.”

She added that “millions of Americans, especially younger ones, will have their understanding of these international and domestic crises filtered through the lens of political satire, thanks to the efforts of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and relative newcomer John Oliver. “

The reporter stated that “Stewart and Colbert are darlings of the left, icons of contemporary American liberalism.” However, “the majority of their guests are just as white and male as they are.”

“Colbert’s track record, in particular, is simply pitiful,” Angyal noted. “This is both surprising and dismaying, given his status as one of the most visible liberal comedians performing political satire today, and the place he holds in the hearts of so many left-leaning American viewers.

“All 10 hosts of late-night television programs are white, though that's going to change at the end of the year,” she noted. “That's when Colbert takes over The Late Show on CBS and The Colbert Report is replaced with The Minority Report, which will be hosted by The Daily Show's longtime senior black correspondent, Larry Wilmore.”

Meanwhile, Angyal stated:

Most surveys regarding cable news channels focus on ratings and the opinions of their viewers. However, a recent poll conducted by the Brookings and Public Religion Research Institute sought the views of all Americans toward all news sources in the nation.

A mere 5 percent of the respondents called the left-wing MSNBC cable channel their “most trusted” TV news outlet. On the other end of the spectrum, the Fox News Channel was named by 25 percent of the people surveyed, surprisingly more than the 23 percent who pointed to the “mainstream media” broadcast networks and the 21 percent who said they trust the Cable News Channel.

Demonstrating just how far the “Lean Forward” network has fallen, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central drew 8 percent of the positive responses, three points more than MSNBC.

In an article on the survey, Andrew Kirell of Mediaite stated: “Now, of course, the argument could be made that MSNBC’s just trusted by the fewest because of exposure. (CNN and Fox are much bigger household names; and broadcast networks are still the dominant news outlets in the ratings.)"

Nevertheless, Independent voters also choose Fox News first, over MSNBC with a 26 percent to 4 percent margin. The broadcast networks came in at 17 percent, while CNN draws a total of 16 percent from those viewers.

While the main goal of the survey was to determine the respondents' views on immigration reform, the poll also produced interesting data regarding where people get their news.

When asked where they get trusted information about politics and current events, 76 percent said they watch local television news, while 24 stated that they do not.

Turning to talk radio programs, only 42 percent said that they trust such programs as those hosted by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, while 57 percent do not tune in to those sources of information.

However, when asked about public radio, 54 percent of the respondents said they trust the news they receive from these outlets, but 46 percent said they do not.

Apparently a sign of the times, 62 percent indicated that they get at least some of their news online, though 37 percent don't trust what they find on the Internet.

Nevertheless, 57 percent of those surveyed still trust their print newspapers and news magazines to provide reliable information.

Finally, 69 percent of the people polled said they trust cable television news, while 31 percent do not.

Twins David and Jason Benham were working on a pilot for a series to be called Flip It Forward in which they would assist families in building dream homes and fixing up run-down houses when the Home & Garden Television cable channel abruptly canceled the project when the producers learned that the brothers have a history of preaching against homosexuality, abortion and divorce.

As you might expect, gay organizations hailed HGTV's decision while the brothers – sons of evangelical minister Flip Benham – released a statement that said: “If our faith costs us a television show, then so be it.”

Former CBS investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson had some harsh words to share about the Obama administration and its supporters while she was a guest on Monday morning's Fox & Friends program.

After viewing some clips from Sunday's edition of ABC's This Week With George Stephanopoulos in which conservative pundit Laura Ingraham and Democratic analyst David Plouffe clashed over the death of four Americans in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012, Attkisson said she believes that a concerted effort is taking place to divert investigations into that deadly attack, an effort that is being orchestrated by people close to the White House. From January through December of 2013, “the cable news audience, by nearly all measures, declined,” the Journalism Project staff noted. “The combined median prime-time viewership of the three major news channels -- CNN, Fox News and MSNBC -- dropped 11 percent to about 3 million, the smallest it has been since 2007.”

Meanwhile, the daytime audience for cable news “was more stable, holding flat at about 2 million viewers across the three news channels,” the staff stated. “CNN (up 12 percent) and Fox (up 2 percent) actually experienced growth,” which “was counterbalanced by more deep losses at MSNBC (down 15.5 percent).”

According to a new report released on Wednesday by the Pew Research Center, the liberal MSNBC channel's prime-time audience fell 24 percent to 619,500 during the last calendar year, more than the Cable News Network -- which dropped 13 percent to a viewership of 543,000 – and the Fox News Channel, which lost 6 percent but still easily held onto first place with 1.75 million viewers.

As if that weren't bad enough, the “Lean Forward” network's revenue in 2013 lost 2 percent to total only $475 million. During the same period, CNN's income grew 2 percent to reach $1.11 billion, and the revenue for Fox News increased 5 percent to a tidy sum of $1.89 billion.
