Politifact Rules Chris Cuomo's First Amendment Claims Were 'False'

By Curtis Houck, May 8, 2015, Newsbusters

The reliably liberal Politifact (through its Punditfact site) surprisingly took CNN’s New Day co-host Chris Cuomo took task on Thursday for his rather suspect claim on Twitter from Wednesday that “hate speech is excluded from protection” under the First Amendment.

Through its Punditfact site, Politifact’s Lauren Carroll noted his numerous attempts to clarify his remarks and citations of case law, but still came to the conclusion that Cuomo’s original statement was “false” (as opposed to “pants on fire”):

The Supreme Court has ruled that certain categories of speech are excluded from constitutional protection, such as a threat or "fighting words." Sometimes, speech can be both a threat and hate speech, in which case it would not necessarily have First Amendment protection.

Democrats Want “Disrespectful” Anti-Obama Halloween Decorations Taken Down

By Dom The Conservative, Oct. 13, 2014, Universalfreepress.com

Many people are unhappy with the current administration, and those that want to express their disgust with the commander-in-chief are getting a little creative.

Of course, not everyone is on board with demonstrations of discontent with President Obama. In fact, one Oklahoma woman is “absolutely offended” at her neighbors’ Halloween decorations, which she believes have gone too far, KOCO reports.

“I saw it for myself and I was absolutely offended,” Jamilla Phillips said, referring to a fake tombstone with Obama’s name on it.

Phillips, an Edmond resident, was afraid the marker might send the wrong message to children, although, she wasn’t too worried about the demonic baby doll, shredded torso, or bloody crosses.

“He is the president of the United States and it’s about respect,” Phillips added. “This person is still alive. I just thought it was an absolute disrespect.”

(VIDEO) ‘Sat Night Live’ Skits Illegal? Ted Cruz Warns On Campaign Finance Reform

By Lisa de Moraes, Sept. 10, 2014, Deadline.com

A new proposal for campaign finance reform would make Saturday Night Live’spolitical skits illegal, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has warned. The Senate is debating a bill that would add a constitutional amendment allowing Congress reverse a 2010 Supreme Court decision and restore limits on corporate campaign spending. Republicans say the bill, proposed by Dems, is an attack on free speech. Cruz, however, went one step further and connected the dots to NBC’s late-night sketch comedy show, and its exec producer Lorne Michaels.

“Lorne Michaels could be put in jail under this amendment for making fun of any politician. That is extremely dangerous,” Cruz argued yesterday afternoon — tossing in a Dana Carvey impression to drive home his point. That’s because, Cruz insisted, the bill would give congress the “constitutional authority to prohibit” corporations “from engaging in political speech” and, “NBC, which airs Saturday Night Live, is a corporation.”

By Joel Gehrke, Apr. 15, 2014, Washington Examiner

Ron Paul's nonprofit Campaign for Liberty will fight the Internal Revenue Service's demand that it reveal its donor list to the agency, despite having already been fined for refusing to do so.

"There is no legitimate reason for the IRS to know who donates to Campaign for Liberty," Megan Stiles, the communications director at Campaign for Liberty, told the Washington Examiner in an email on Tuesday. "We believe the First Amendment is on our side as evidenced by cases such as NAACP v. Alabama and International Union UAW v. National Right to Work. Many 501(c)(4) organizations protect the privacy of their donors in the very same way as Campaign for Liberty. For some reason the IRS has now chosen to single out Campaign for Liberty for special attention. We plan to fight this all the way."

Ron Paul suggested that the group will refuse to pay the IRS fine in an fundraising email to supporters about the agency's request for information.
