Japan Won't Give In To Terrorism--But No Troops

Japan told the world's nations Thursday it will never give in to terrorism and will continue providing non-military assistance for the fight against the Islamic State and other extremist groups — but not military troops or equipment "at this point."

Japan sent Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura to the United Nations to deliver the message that following the "outrageous and inhumane" beheading of two Japanese hostages by Islamic State fighters "we will stand resolutely as a member of the international community combating terrorism."

Kawamura said Japan intends to exercise leadership to increase international coordination in tackling terrorism, noting that it will chair the G-7 group of major economic powers in 2016.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan condemned with outrage and horror on Sunday an online video that purported to show an Islamic State group militant beheading Japanese journalist Kenji Goto.

The video posted on militant websites late Saturday Middle East time ended days of negotiations to save the man and heightened fears for the life of a Jordanian fighter pilot also held hostage.

"I feel indignation over this immoral and heinous act of terrorism," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters after convening an emergency Cabinet meeting.

"When I think of the grief of his family, I am left speechless," he said. "The government has been doing its utmost in responding to win his release, and we are filled with deep regret."

He vowed that Japan will not give in to terrorism and will continue to provide humanitarian aid to countries fighting the Islamic State extremists.

The White House released a statement in which President Barack Obama also condemned "the heinous murder" and praised Goto's reporting, saying he "courageously sought to convey the plight of the Syrian people to the outside world."

US Offers Japan Condolences Over ISIS Killing

"He also expressed appreciation for Japan's significant contributions of humanitarian assistance to the Middle East region. The two leaders agreed to continue their cooperation on a range of regional and global issues."

Mr Abe condemned the apparent killing, telling Japanese television: "Such an act of terrorism is outrageous and unforgivable. I condemn it strongly and resolutely."

ISIS claims the ransom amount is the same as the financial aid pledged by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to countries affected by the militant group.

Japanese officials have repeatedly stressed that their military, which is constitutionally forbidden from taking action other than for self-defense, isn't involved in the international airstrikes against ISIS positions in Syria and Iraq.

ISIS Threatens To Kill 2 Japanese Hostages, Asks For $200M

“You have proudly donated $100 million to kill our women and children, to destroy the homes of the Muslims," the militant says, emphasizing his points with the wave of a knife. “So the life of this Japanese citizen will cost you $100 million."

That was a reference to the $200 million in non-military aid that Japan had just pledged to several countries fighting ISIS.
