The seven young men sitting before some of Capitol Hill’s most powerful lawmakers weren’t graduate students or junior analysts from some think tank. No, Space Rogue, Kingpin, Mudge and the others were hackers who had come from the mysterious environs of cyberspace to deliver a terrifying warning to the world.

Your computers, they told the panel of senators in May 1998, are not safe — not the software, not the hardware, not the networks that link them together. The companies that build these things don’t care, the hackers continued, and they have no reason to care because failure costs them nothing. And the federal government has neither the skill nor the will to do anything about it.

“If you’re looking for computer security, then the Internet is not the place to be,” said Mudge, then 27 and looking like a biblical prophet with long brown hair flowing past his shoulders. The Internet itself, he added, could be taken down “by any of the seven individuals seated before you” with 30 minutes of well-choreographed keystrokes.

Union: Hackers Have Personnel Data On Every Federal Employee

WASHINGTON (AP) -- As many as 14 million current and former civilian U.S. government employees had their personal information exposed to hackers, according to two people who were briefed on the investigation, a far higher figure than the 4 million the Obama administration initially disclosed.

The newer estimates put the number of compromised records at between 9 million and 14 million going back to the 1980s, said one congressional official and one former US official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because information disclosed in the confidential briefings includes classified details of the investigation.

There are about 4.2 million federal employees, so the majority of the records exposed relate to former employees. Contractor information also has been stolen, officials said.

The apparent hack came as President Obama addressed the nation regarding cyber security. He is expected to propose two pieces of cyber security legislation and to address the effort in his upcoming State of the Union address.

The hackers subsequently tweeted images of spreadsheets containing the home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of dozens of current and former senior U.S. military officers.

We Still Don't Know Who Hacked Sony

No one has admitted taking down North Korea’s Internet. It could have been an act of retaliation by the U.S. government, but it could just as well have been an ordinary DDoS attack. The follow-on attack against Sony PlayStation definitely seems to be the work of hackers unaffiliated with a government.

Not knowing who did what isn’t new. It’s called the “attribution problem,” and it plagues Internet security. But as governments increasingly get involved in cyberspace attacks, it has policy implications as well.

The hackers are believed to have used a denial of service attack, where they bombard the targets servers with internet traffic forcing it to shut down and preventing legitimate access.

This comes as Christmas was ruined for thousands of children across the country who were forced to abandon plans to spend the holidays in a virtual world playing on their new Playstation or Xbox games systems due to cyber-hackers.

Kirsten Dunst has become the first celebrity to publicly criticize Apple after it emerged that a flaw in the 'Find My iPhone' function of its iCloud service may have helped an unknown hacker steal nude photos of her and '100 other celebrities'.

The Spiderman star tweeted 'Thank you iCloud' along with icons representing a slice of pizza and a pile of poo on Monday afternoon, the day after naked photos of her were published online.

The supposed hacker behind the scandal has claimed that they broke into stars' iCloud accounts, including those of Dunst, Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Rihanna, before publishing them on 4chan, the image-sharing forum.

Celeb Hacker On The Run: FBI Investigates As Mystery Man Claims Responsibility For Stealing Hundreds Of Stars' Nude Photos

The chief hacker who organized the theft of private nude pictures of actresses including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton has gone on the run.

The anonymous individual, who sparked the scandal on Sunday after dumping dozens of naked photographs of female celebrities onto the 4chan online forum, took to the ‘deep web’ where the images are thought to have first been posted a week ago to say he had to ‘move location’.

In an apparent attempt to evade the authorities, he said he would be relocating as he thanked his ‘supporters’ who apparently shared the images on AnonIB before they were reposted on forum 4chan on Sunday.

Jennifer Lawrence has reported the stolen image to the authorities, and the FBI is investigating amid an international hunt for the hacker.

The hacker, who is referred to by other posters as the 'original guy', also appeared to confirm that the hacking was a conspiracy involving more than just one individual and 'the result of several months of long and hard work'.

In the post thread written just after midnight on Monday, the anonymous hacker said that he will be moving to another location before seeming to threaten to upload more compromising images - asking for bitcoin (BTC) donations from those willing to pay to see.

'Guys, just to let you know I didn't do this by myself,' wrote the deviant hacker.

'There are several other people who were in on it and I needed to count on to make this happened (sic).

'This is the result of several months of long and hard work by all involved. We appreciate your donations and applaud your excitement.

'I will soon be moving to another location from which I will continue to post.'

And in a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the FBI confirmed that it had begun an investigation.

'The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter. Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.'

Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photos 'Leaked By 4chan': Explicit Pix Of 'Hunger Games' Star On Twitter

MailOnline: Nude photographs of Jennifer Lawrence - as well as photographs that purportedly show multiple celebrities - have leaked online.

According to Buzzfeed, the cell phone photos were obtained through iCloud before they were published on a 4chan thread.

A list of the alleged victims reportedly posted by the hacker has also appeared online, the news site noted. There are 101 names in total.

Reps for Lawrence confirmed to MailOnline the photos of her are real.

'This is a flagrant violation of privacy. The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence,' the emailed statement read.

The hacker wrote on 4chan he or she is accepting donations for a video which allegedly shows Lawrence in a sex act.

'Jennifer Lawrence' became a Twitter trend on Sunday afternoon.

Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who confirmed she was a hacking victim, wrote on Twitter 'To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves.'
