Obama To Host Illegal Immigrant Dreamers At White House

President Obama will host a half-dozen Dreamers — illegal immigrants here under his temporary deportation amnesty — at the White House on Wednesday as he tries to fight back against Republicans’ efforts to cancel his immigration policies.

A White House official said the president would meet with Dreamers from Texas, Maryland, Nevada, Connecticut, New York and Virginia, using them as evidence for why congressional Republicans should relent and allow his amnesties to remain in effect.

Military To Allow Undocumented Immigrants To Serve

A small number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. will have an opportunity to join the military for the first time in decades under a new Department of Defense policy unveiled Thursday.

The new rules will expand an existing program allowing recruiters to target foreign nationals with high-demand skills, mostly rare foreign language expertise or specialized health care training.

For the first time, the program — known as Military Accessions in the National Interest, or MAVNI — will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16. More specifically, they must be approved under a 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA.

The new Pentagon policy may be the first phase of a broader government-wide effort to ease pressure on immigrants and create new paths to citizenship. President Barack Obama, frustrated with the failure of Congress to pass any substantial immigration reform, has vowed to aggressively use his presidential authority to change the way immigration policies are carried out.

The Pentagon program is capped at 1,500 recruits per year. Officials say it's unclear how many of those might be unlawful DACA status immigrants as opposed to others who are also eligible for military service under MAVNI, including those with legal, nonpermanent visas such as students or tourists.

Cinthya Garcia-Cisneros, 19 years-old, was convicted in January of this year in the killing of two young girls in a felony hit-and-run accident in Oregon. An illegal immigrant, Garcia-Cisneros had temporary permission to be in the country through the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — the result of a 2012 executive order.

Now, though she is both a convicted felon and in this country illegally, Garcia-Cisneros has not only avoided prison time, she’s reportedly been released from custody after her immigration case was dismissed. Apparently, she has even avoided deportation, thanks to a judge whose name is not being disclosed.

On Friday, the House of Representatives finally passed an emergency spending bill in response to the humanitarian crisis at the border. The bill was a reworked version of the one that was pulled off the floor Thursday after it was obvious that it did not have enough votes to pass. House Republicans also pushed through another bill that would effectively end DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which the President put into place in 2012 to provide a reprieve from deportation to certain undocumented immigrants who were brought here as children prior to 2007. Neither bill is going anywhere as President Obama has already said he’d veto both and the Senate will not even bring them to the floor for a vote.

The spending bill that the House Republicans were finally able to agree on Friday evening provided a fraction of the funding the President requested weeks ago and less than half of what Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) had initially proposed. The bill essentially just provides more resources to southern states to send the National Guard to the border and helps deport detained immigrants at a faster pace. It does nothing to actually address any of the actual issues surrounding the humanitarian crisis. However, due to an extreme portion of the House Republican Caucus, along with a couple of meddling GOP Senators, this was the best that the House Republican leadership could get.
