FOX Sports: NFL Rejects Adrian Peterson's Immediate Reinstatement

The NFL has informed Adrian Peterson that his case will now be reviewed under the league's personal conduct policy, FOX Sports 1 NFL insider Mike Garafolo reports. The league has reportedly asked the Minnesota Vikings running back and his representatives for relevant information on his child abuse case and plea agreement.
Peterson has a right to a hearing before any discipline is levied, Garafolo reports. Until this review process is complete, Peterson will remain on the commissioner's exempt list.

Poll: Voters Punt On NFL Scandals, WBUR Poll

Political campaigns are used to football interfering with campaign season; good luck getting a voter to answer either the door or the phone when the Patriots are on. But this year the NFL — or more specifically, the league’s handling of alleged domestic violence by players — is impacting the political campaign in another way.
Almost two-thirds of the state’s likely voters (64 percent) call themselves football fans, according to the latest WBUR tracking poll, conducted Sept. 24-27. The vast majority (84 percent) of voters have been following the domestic violence story very or somewhat closely. And by a 3-to-1 margin, voters think the NFL has bungled the job. Just 20 percent approve of the NFL’s handling of the issue, compared to 61 percent who disapprove.
With numbers that high, it’s not surprising that the issue made its way into the Massachusetts governor’s race. The major party candidates initially differed on whether NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should resign over the the league’s handling of Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice, who was shown on a hotel surveillance video knocking his then-fiancee unconscious in an elevator. Republican candidate Charlie Baker equivocated initially but then later called for Goodell’s resignation, as Democrats and women’s groups pounced.

The only thing unusual about this case is that the battery
was caught on videotape.
Seeing a woman hit hard -- particularly hard enough to knock
her out -- is shocking. Even TV dramas don’t show women being hit. I have heard
that TV scriptwriters are instructed not to put in scenes depicting violence against
women. It is too upsetting to viewers. So it is the showing of the videotape where
Mr. Rice punched his fiancé in the face that has so shocked the public and made
this case so newsworthy.
But as far as the actual violence goes, this is a routine
case. The victim was hit once, did not require medical treatment, and doesn’t want
her (now) husband prosecuted. This happens all the time. And in Los Angeles, if
a case of misdemeanor battery is filed in this sort of situation, it is very commonly
held in abeyance -- called “diversion” -- while the defendant attends anger management
classes. If he (or, rarely, she) completes the classes and has no further violations,
then the charges are dismissed.
So this would not be a case of celebrity justice in Los Angeles.
Diversion of such a case out of the criminal justice system while the defendant
attends anger management classes is routine.
But if the victim is injured and requires medical treatment
or shows extensive bruising, or if the perpetrator has a record of committing domestic
violence, then the case will be handled as a straight criminal case. There will
be no diversion. But even in this instance, the victim very often refuses to cooperate.
This is particularly true if she is still living with the perpetrator/defendant.
So unless there is other evidence -- such as photos of the injuries, or witnesses
to the battery, or a recorded 911 call reporting the battery in an excited voice,
the case might not even be filed.
Regarding Mr. Rice being fired from his football team, I think
this is excessive. Ray Rice losing his livelihood for this punishes the victim
-- his wife -- as much as it punishes him.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Below is the full text of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s statement, which he released Monday. He has been charged with child abuse for striking his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch.
"My attorney has asked me not to discuss the facts of my pending case. I hope you can respect that request and help me honor it. I very much want the public to hear from me but I understand that it is not appropriate to talk about the facts in detail at this time. Nevertheless, I want everyone to understand how sorry I feel about the hurt I have brought to my child. I never wanted to be a distraction to the Vikings organization, the Minnesota community or to my teammates. I never imagined being in a position where the world is judging my parenting skills or calling me a child abuser because of the discipline I administered to my son.
I voluntarily appeared before the grand jury several weeks ago to answer any and all questions they had. Before my grand jury appearance, I was interviewed by two different police agencies without an attorney. In each of these interviews I have said the same thing, and that is that I never ever intended to harm my son. I will say the same thing once I have my day in court. I have to live with the fact that when I disciplined my son the way I was disciplined as a child, I caused an injury that I never intended or thought would happen. I know that many people disagree with the way I disciplined my child. I also understand after meeting with a psychologist that there are other alternative ways of disciplining a child that may be more appropriate…"

"The allegation of another investigation into Adrian Peterson is simply not true. This is not a new allegation, it's one that is unsubstantiated and was shopped around to authorities in two states over a year ago and nothing came of it. An adult witness adamantly insists Adrian did nothing inappropriate with his son. There is no ongoing or new investigation."
HOUSTON (KHOU) -- New accusations against Adrian Peterson come from another mother who has another four-year-old son of Peterson, and also involve Peterson striking his boy as a form of discipline.

Adrian Peterson: Not A Child Abuser, But Sorry About 'Hurt I Have Brought ' To Son

(CNN) -- Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson said Monday that he is "not a perfect parent, but I am, without a doubt, not a child abuser."
Peterson, one of the NFL's marquee players, will practice this week and can play in Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, despite facing a child abuse charge, team officials said.
Peterson, who was kept out of Sunday's game against the New England Patriots, turned himself in to East Texas authorities Saturday, two days after an indictment alleged the 29-year-old father did "recklessly or by criminal negligence cause bodily injury" to his son, a felony.
Peterson quickly posted $15,000 in bail and was released, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
In his first comments on the case, the reinstated NFL star told fans in a written statement posted on his Twitter feed, "I never imagined being in a position where the world is judging my parenting skills or calling me a child abuser because of the discipline I administered to my son."

Barkley: 'Every Black Parent In The 'South' Would Be In Jail For Disciplining Kids

On Sunday’s broadcast of CBS’s “NFL Today,” former NBA great and current TNT basketball announcer Charles Barkley reacted to Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s child abuse allegations by suggesting there are cultural customs in black communities in the South that have made some forms of discipline the norm.
Barkley told CBS’s Jim Rome that if tough standards were applied, that would lead to a lot of black parents potentially being in jail.
Partial transcript as follows:
BARKLEY: I’m from the South, I understand Boomer's rage and anger, but I have – listen we have to accept, he's a white guy, I’m a black guy. I don't know where he's from, I’m from the South. Whipping, we do that all the time. Every black parent in the South is going to be in jail under those circumstances. I think we have to be careful letting people dictate how they treat –
ROME: It doesn't matter where you're from, right is right, and wrong is wrong. It doesn't matter where you're from –
BARKLEY: I don't believe that because listen we spank kids in the South. I think the question about did Adrian Peterson go overboard. But listen Jim we all grew up in different environments. Listen, every black parent in my neighborhood in the South would be in trouble or in jail under those circumstances.
ROME: See my thing is I don't want to tell anybody how to raise their kids and I don't want anybody telling me how to raise my kids. But let's make a distinction between child rearing and child abuse. That was child abuse, there's no fine line here.

Adrian Peterson Indicted For Child Abuse

4:12 PM PT -- According to the police report, Peterson allegedly sent text messages to the child's mother saying he "felt bad" because he struck the kid in the testicles.
"Got him in the nuts once I noticed. But I felt so bad, n I'm all tearing that butt up when needed!" the text said.
Peterson allegedly sent a follow up text saying, "Never do I go overboard! But all my kids will know, hey daddy has he biggest heart but don't play no games when it comes to acting right."
4:10 PM PT -- According to the police report, the child told authorities he had also been hit by a belt and there were "a lot of belts in daddy's closet."
The child also said AP had put leaves in his mouth when he was being struck and that his pants were down.
3:50 PM PT -- The Vikings have deactivated Peterson for Sunday's game.
3:34 PM PT -- Peterson has issued a statement through his lawyer saying, "The charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son."
"This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgement as a parent to discipline his son."
"He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in East Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened."
"He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours."
"Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury."
3:00 PM PT -- The police report on the case includes photos of cuts on the boy's thigh and hands. He also had bruises on his lower back and buttocks, and according to the report ... Peterson admitted punishing him.
