Hillary: Capitalism Needs A “Reset”

By Jazz Shaw, July 25, 2015 Hot Air

Hillary Clinton visited New York University’s Stern School of Business this week to give a speech on economic policy. On the surface that sounds roughly as interesting as watching paint dry, but she dropped a few gems into the otherwise standard, liberal dogma which caught the attention of analysts around the country. Echoing some familiar sentiments of more fire breathing socialists, Clinton said that capitalism itself was “out of balance” and in need of a “reset.” (Fortune Magazine).

Hillary Clinton wants to hike capital gains taxes as part of her plan to discourage short-term thinking among corporate executives and investors…

To bring what she called “hit-and-run” activist shareholders to heel, Clinton exhorted institutional investors to exert their leverage as a counterweight on management. And she pledged to order a review of regulations on shareholder activism and to push for the same-day disclosure of buybacks already in force in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

Pope Says He Wasn’t Offered By ‘Communist Crucifix’

By Nicole Winfield, July 13, 2015 AP

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) -- Pope Francis says he wasn't offended by the "Communist crucifix" given to him by Bolivian President Evo Morales during his South American pilgrimage.

Morales surprised the pontiff with the unusual gift, a crucifix attached to a hammer and sickle, when Francis arrived in La Paz on Wednesday.

The crucifix was a replica of one designed by a Jesuit priest, the Rev. Luis Espinal, who was tortured and killed by Bolivian paramilitary squads in 1980. Francis prayed at the site of Espinal's assassination upon his arrival in Bolivia.

Pope Rails Against Unbridled Capitalism, 'Idolatry Of Money'

By Philip Pullella and Daniela Desantis, July 11, 2015 My Fox News

ASUNCION (Reuters) - Pope Francis appealed to world leaders on Saturday to seek a new economic model to help the poor, and to shun policies that "sacrifice human lives on the altar of money and profit."

It was the second time during his trip to South America that Francis, the first pope from the region, used a major speech to excoriate unbridled capitalism and champion the rights of the poor.

In Bolivia last Thursday, he urged the downtrodden to change the world economic order, denouncing a "new colonialism" by agencies that impose austerity programs and calling for the poor to have the "sacred rights" of labor, lodging and land.

Pope Calls Unfettered Capitalism 'The Dung Of The Devil'

By Agencies Evans-Pritchard, Mehreen Khan, July, 21, 2006, Telegraph

Pope Francis on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the "new colonialism" of austerity, describing unfettered capitalism as “the dung of the devil” and apologising for the Catholic church's role in the conquest of indigenous populations in the Americas.

He delivered a powerful mea culpa on the part of the church in the highlight of his South American pilgrimage, "humbly" begging forgiveness during an encounter in Bolivia with indigenous groups and other activists and in the presence of Bolivia's first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales.

The first Latin American pope noted that church leaders in the past had acknowledged that "grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God." St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continent's indigenous for the "pain and suffering" caused during the 500 years of the church's presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.

'Poverty, The Rule of Law, And Human Flourishing'

Samuel Gregg, Dec. 3, 2014, Acton Institute

Back in 2012, the financier George Soros and the head of one of the world’s largest anti-poverty NGOs, Fazle Hasan Abed, pointed out in the Financial Times that, despite the Great Recession, the number of people living in extreme poverty had dropped in every region of the world for the first time since record-keeping had begun. That story—and many others concerning measurable declines in poverty and economic inequality as more people participate in global markets—is often given short shrift these days. Such developments don’t fit the populist narratives that sometimes obfuscate discussion of such matters.

How The Free Market Can Save American Education

Justin Haskins, Nov. 14, 2014, Heartland Institute

Only one week after Election Day, Washington, DC’s focus has shifted from furious campaigning to National Education Week and the Thought Leader Summit (held from Nov. 10–13), “a gathering of the leaders from education, business, and government who define and shape trends in public and private education.”

McDonald's Key Sales Figure declines In October

AP, Nov. 10, 2014

President and CEO Don Thompson said in a statement that consumers are increasingly looking for food where they have the option to customize it to their liking, as well as places that have convenient ways to order and pay. McDonald's previously announced that it plans to expand its "Create Your Taste" offering that lets people pick the buns and toppings they want on burgers by tapping a touchscreen.

The chain said that its U.S. restaurants were hampered by strong competition. Thompson previously said that McDonald's plans to combat this in party by simplifying its menu so that its restaurants have room to offer options best-suited for their regions. This process is expected to start in January.

True Reason Gas Prices Falling (Hint: It's Not Due TO Green Energy)

Stephen Moore, Oct. 26, 2014, Daily Signal

American workers and motorists got some badly-needed relief this week when the price of oil plunged to its lowest level in years. The oil price has fallen by about 25 percent since its peak back in June of $105 a barrel. This is translating to lower prices at the pump with many states now below $3 a gallon.

At present levels, these lower oil and gas prices are the equivalent of a $200 billion cost saving to American consumers and businesses. That’s $200 billion a year we don’t have to send to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other foreign nations. Now that’s an economic stimulus par excellence.

How We 'Won' In Vietnam--But Are Losing At Home

Photo via Flickr
Glenn Harlan Reynolds, Oct. 27, 2014, usatoday.com

So I guess we won that war after all. According to the Pew Global Poll, 95% of people in Vietnam agree that most people are better off under capitalism, even if there is inequality.

By contrast, only 70% of Americans believe the same thing. (America is out-performed by such other less developed countries as Nigeria, China, Turkey, Malaysia, the Philippines and India). Maybe, quipped an Internet commenter, the Vietnamese should send us some advisers.

But there are some lessons to be learned here, one of which is that history plays out slowly. (Though it's probably a myth, Chinese premier Zhou Enlai supposedly once said about the French Revolution, it's "too early to say" how it has turned out.) Had you asked people in 1974 about support for capitalism in Vietnam 40 years later, few would have predicted that 95% of Vietnamese would support capitalism today. The lower level of support in America might have surprised some folks, too, though maybe not.

‘Blue-Collar, Anti-Capitalist Everyman’ Michael Moore Owns NINE Homes, Divorce Reveals

Michael Moore / via www.spyhollywood.com
By Washington Free Beacon Staff, Jul. 22, 2014

The divorce between filmmaker Michael Moore and his wife is bringing many details to surface, including that the two own nine homes in New York and Michigan, according to the Detroit News.

By reaching a settlement, Moore avoids a trial that could have aired dirty laundry common in high-proile breakups and impugned his long-hewn image as a common man by disclosing details of his comfortable life.

His hit movies and best-selling books have begat a lifestyle far from most ballcap-wearing, duck-waddling denizens of Flint.

Moore and Glynn own nine properties in Michigan and New York, including a Manhattan condo that once was three apartments. CelebrityNetWorth.com pegs their wealth at $50 million.
