Even As Nuclear Talks Get Extension, Crowds Denounce America At Tehran Rally

While U.S. and Iranian negotiators gave themselves more time Friday to reach a nuclear deal that could improve the countries’ ties, crowds of Iranians here chanted “Death to America,” just as they have for 36 years.

The occasion was Quds Day, an annual holiday observed since the Iranian revolution to express support for the Palestinians in their struggle with Israel. The United States, as well as Israel, has always been a target.

In Vienna, where negotiations have been dragging on for days, Iran, the U.S. and five other world powers agreed to extend their current, temporary nuclear deal through Monday, giving themselves more time to try to reach a breakthrough.

Earlier in the day, a crowd of about 50,000 people took part in the rally in sizzling heat at Tehran's Palestine Square, while others celebrated in hundreds of towns and cities across the country.

Iran Says World Powers Are Divided And Backtracking In Nuclear Talks

Pope Francis on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the "new colonialism" of austerity, describing unfettered capitalism as “the dung of the devil” and apologising for the Catholic church's role in the conquest of indigenous populations in the Americas.

He delivered a powerful mea culpa on the part of the church in the highlight of his South American pilgrimage, "humbly" begging forgiveness during an encounter in Bolivia with indigenous groups and other activists and in the presence of Bolivia's first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales.

The first Latin American pope noted that church leaders in the past had acknowledged that "grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God." St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continent's indigenous for the "pain and suffering" caused during the 500 years of the church's presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.

An Iranian': Nuclear Talks Get Feisty

VIENNA: A top-level meeting at the Iran nuclear talks this week was a stormy affair, Iranian media reported Wednesday, with the country's foreign minister warning: "Never threaten an Iranian."

The altercation happened Monday evening as foreign ministers from Iran and six major powers including US Secretary of State John Kerry met in Vienna seeking to nail down a historic nuclear accord.

They failed to overcome their remaining differences, and have given themselves until Friday to finalize the accord to end a 13-year standoff over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The spark, during a discussion on lifting an arms embargo as part of the nuclear deal, came when other ministers expressed concerns about Iran being a destabilizing influence in the Middle East, Iranian media reported.

This prompted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to threaten to drag the others before an international court for supporting former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, an arch enemy of Iran, the reports said.

Diplomats stopped short of confirming the comments, but one senior Western envoy said the meeting saw a "very heated exchange of views."
