MSNBC host and legal analyst Ari Melber called Chief Justice John Roberts the "most pivotal legal defender" of President Obama's healthcare law after it was announced the Supreme Court voted to uphold Obamacare subsidies.

ARI MELBER, MSNBC: He has become the most pivotal legal defender of the Affordable Care Act. And, again, this is what's so interesting about the Court, especially not only for Court junkies like us but for people around the country. The fact that you might think from Justice Roberts' history and from the president that appointed him, he might be skeptical of Obamacare. That may or may not be true.

The Chief Justice saying today, that does not matter, that's not what moved him in this case. What moved him was the simple question, what was this law supposed to do, fund health care or defund it? Was it supposed to fund it nationally or only in certain states? He says it's clear to him that as drafted by the Democratic majority in Congress and signed by President Obama, it was clearly dined to fund and advance health care, not yank it away.

Poll: Christie Approval Rating At New Low In N.J.

Chris Christie’s approval ratings continue to drop in his home state, according to a new poll.

Only 30 percent of registered voters surveyed by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind Poll said they approved of the job the possible Republican presidential candidate is doing, while 55 percent disapproved. The approval rating is a six percentage-point drop from April.

The new poll also marks the two-term governor’s lowest approval ratings since he took office in 2010, when he registered 48 percent approval. His rating peaked in November 2012 (just one month after Hurricane Sandy ravaged his state’s coastal areas) at 77 percent and has been on a steady decline ever since. September 2014 was the last time his approval ratings were “above water” (46 percent approval-40 percent disapproval).

The percentage of respondents who said they “like everything” about the governor is also lower than ever at 24 percent. Alternatively, 39 percent “dislike everything” about Christie’s leadership. The remainder of respondents are somewhere in the middle: 23 percent like Christie personally but dislike his policies, and 7 percent dislike him personally but like his policies.

David Brooks: "President Obama Has Run An Amazingly Scandal-Free Administration"

"President Obama has run an amazingly scandal-free administration, not only he himself, but the people around him. He’s chosen people who have been pretty scandal-free," conservative New York Timesopinion writer David Brooks said Friday on PBS' NewsHour.

Brooks was discussing the Dennis Hastert scandal with liberal sparring partner Matt Shields at the time.

"David makes a good point," Shields said. "And I agree with him on this administration in particular."

First, if the allegations about the contact with the boys are true, well, we have seen that with the Catholic Church. We have seen a disturbing undercurrent in American life, I guess, and maybe in world life, of this sort of thing.

I am struck, as Mark just mentioned, the whole litany of people, especially of that era, who were involved in some scandal or another. Some of it was sexual. Some of it was more financial, even Tom DeLay’s, Speaker Wright. And it was just all concentrated in a lot of people all at once.

In the 1970s, when oil prices jumped, most liberals embraced a simple solution: price controls. It should be illegal, they thought, to sell oil or gasoline for more than a certain amount. Americans should be able to drive without being fleeced by oil companies and foreign governments.

The impulse was understandable. Gasoline is an essential commodity for most people. When the cost rises, it imposes a heavy burden on consumers, most of whom have few transportation options.

In 1971, in an attempt to tame inflation, Republican President Richard Nixon imposed controls on almost all prices. By 1974, he had lifted most of them. But those on gas remained. Under Democratic President Jimmy Carter, they led to widespread shortages and long lines at service stations -- and didn't keep prices from rising. But the controls lasted until his successor, Ronald Reagan, lifted them in 1981.

Liberals learned an unforgettable lesson: Price controls on gasoline don't work. In recent decades, when gas prices have soared, Democrats have shown no desire to repeat the lesson.
