Handgun-Shaped Smartphone Case Alarms Police

By Tommy Rowan, Jun. 30, 2015, Philly.com

A South Jersey prosecutor is warning residents that carrying a controversial new handgun-shaped cellphone case is not smart.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office posted a photo of the iPhone case on its Facebook page Monday with a warning: "This is not a cool product or a good idea."

Spokesman Al Della Fave said the cases haven't triggered any incidents yet, but several law enforcement officials had expressed concerns with the product.

"The first thing you notice is the realistic butt of the weapon and the trigger guard," he said. "And most kids ... carry their cellphones in their back pocket, and if they were to reach back for it, to pull it out to make a call, it's the same motion as someone pulling a concealed weapon."

Della Fave said local police have had similar concerns with products that resemble or conceal weapons.

"It's just an accident waiting to happen," Fave said.

The iPhone-only cases are sold on the Internet and are available in a range of colors. Prices generally range from $5 to $10.

Nine People Shot At Mantua Barbecue

By Mark Fazlollah, Jun. 21, 2015, Philly.com

Nine people were shot, including a baby and two children, during a barbecue Saturday night in Philadelphia's Mantua section, police said.

The shotgun blasts left the three juveniles and three of the six male adult victims in stable condition at West Philadelphia hospitals late Saturday night, police said. Two other male victims arrived at Hahnemann University Hospital with minor wounds and were to be released, authorities. The condition of a last victim could not be immediately learned.

The shooting took place about 9:50 p.m. near 41st and Ogden Streets in the 16th District, authorities said.

Detectives said it appeared that the barbecue - involving as many as 50 people - had been fired upon by one shooter, who fired two buckshot blasts from a shotgun. He fired from the street, they said, but may have arrived or left in a car. "There were a lot of people out there," Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives, said Saturday night, saying the toll could have been even higher.

Former TV Anchor Loses N-Word Lawsuit

By Dan Spinelli, Jun. 15, 2015, Philly.com

AFTER LESS THAN three hours of deliberation yesterday, an all-white jury decided that former Fox 29 anchor Tom Burlington had not been fired for racial reasons.

Burlington was terminated on July 12, 2007, after using the N-word during a June 23, 2007, staff meeting about the Philadelphia Council of the NAACP's symbolic burial of the infamous epithet.

"Does this mean we can finally say, 'N-----'?" Burlington testified he'd said in the meeting. However, Anne Malone, to whom Fox 29 referred Burlington for sensitivity training, wrote that he had said the word three times in rapid succession during the June 23 meeting.

Jerome Hoffman, attorney for Fox 29, said in his closing argument that Malone's notes predate Burlington's lawsuit, and may best reflect his honest recollection of the meeting.

Trial Begins In Fox29 Anchor's 'N-Word' Lawsuit

By Sam Wood, Jun. 8, 2015, Philly.com

Victim of workplace double standard or his own poor judgment?

A jury is faced with that question as a race-discrimination lawsuit filed by former Fox29 anchorman Tom Burlington began today at U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

Burlington, who is white, contends the station fired him after he uttered the "n-word," while African American employees were not disciplined for using the same word.

In his lawsuit, Burlington said he had been unable to find work as a TV newscaster because of his termination and the subsequent publicity. He is seeking unspecified damages. A court filing contends that he lost nearly $3 million in past and future earnings.

Burlington took the stand this afternoon before the all-white jury.

Fox29 attorneys at Dechert LLP did not return calls for comment on Friday. In court papers filed last month, they asserted there was no evidence that race played a role in the decision to end Burlington's contract. They attributed his firing to "his admitted misconduct, his poor judgment, the upset it caused in the newsroom, and the resulting negative publicity."

Overhaul Pennsylvania's Failing Education Model

By Thomas Hylton, May 14, 2015, Philly.com

After decades of talking but not doing, Pennsylvania finally appears ready to reform public school financing.

Both Gov. Wolf and Republican legislators agree the state should boost its share of school funding by substituting increased state income and sales taxes for local real estate taxes. With a bipartisan vote, the House passed such a bill Wednesday, which the governor praised as the beginning of a conversation on substantive property tax relief. This is a critically important breakthrough.

Local school property taxes are an enormous burden on Pennsylvania’s cities and towns, and the primary impediment to their revitalization. For most of the last 60 years, urban property values have declined as ever-rising real estate taxes have driven residents and businesses out of traditional towns and into the suburbs. The urban exodus has left behind increased concentrations of poverty and the need for costly local services, perpetuating a downward spiral.
