​Police Officer Who Recently Gave Birth Killed In Neb. Shooting

OMAHA, Neb. -- Police in Omaha, Neb., say a shootout between officers and a convicted felon has left an officer and the suspect dead. Both died at the same hospital.

Officer Kerrie Orozco was a seven-year veteran and a new mother. Orozco was expected to begin maternity leave Thursday, with the release of her hospitalized premature infant, reports The Washington Post.

The suspect, Marcus Wheeler, is said to be a gang member and was wanted in connection with another shooting.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Orozco was part of a task force serving a felony arrest warrant for Wheeler, reports CBS affiliate KMTV.

"She was a friend, a popular officer, a top-notch person. And I just can't imagine that this is even happened. But Officer Orozco is a top-notch individual and the city of Omaha owes her a debt of gratitude and her family like no other," said Schmaderer.

Omaha (White) Cop, (Black) Suspect Killed In Shootout

An Omaha police officer and a suspect were shot and killed after a confrontation at North 30th Street and Martin Avenue just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The officer is identified as Kerrie Orozco.

The suspect is identified as Marcus Wheeler, 26.

Witnesses reported hearing about 15 gunshots in two bursts and seeing CPR performed on the officer. Officer Orozco was taken to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center. Another ambulance carried Wheeler to the same facility. Both later died.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer arrived at the scene, then left after about 15 minutes, believed to be en route to the hospital.

Sources tell WOWT 6 News Officer Orozco was a task force member. She was a wife and mother.

Chief Schmaderer said Wednesday evening, "This is a somber day for the city of Omaha," and then announced that, "Kerrie Orozco has died after being shot in the line of duty."
