Concealed Carry, Marijuana Laws Raise Questions For Employers

Two relatively new Illinois laws may cause unexpected headaches for businesses, but The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a seminar intended to help ease the pain.
The state's concealed carry gun law is already more than a year old, but its medical marijuana pilot program is just getting started.

Attorneys with the statewide law firm Heyl Royster last year started presenting seminars on concealed carry and how it could affect both employers and employees.

Chrissie Peterson of Heyl Royster's Peoria office said businesses have reacted responsibly to the concealed carry law and have placed the appropriate signs on their doors if they don't want to allow guns.

"Where you have problems is when a building owner is of one opinion and the person who leases from them is of another," she said. "The law is that the property owner gets to make the decision."

Peterson, Brian Smith of Heyl Royster's Urbana office, and Theresa Powell, managing partner of its Springfield office, will make up the panel for a two-hour discussion June 24 on "Concealed Carry, Medical Marijuana: What you Need to Know."

Study Put Nonsmokers In An Unventilated Room With People Smoking Pot

Studying the effects of secondhand pot smoke is not entirely novel, but a group of scientists recently conducted a new “hotbox” experiment in light of the increased potency of marijuana over the last few decades and to better understand how nonsmokers were affected emotionally and behaviorally.

“This study is a significant update in our knowledge of cannabis smoke effect on nonsmokers and has implications in many arenas, including drugs and driving,” Dr. Edward Cone, who performed some of the early secondhand marijuana smoke studies in the 1980s, said in a statement.

The effect of marijuana, including secondhand exposure, is increasingly being called up in front of lawmakers as many states have approved the use of medical marijuana as well as others that have gone so far as to legalize recreational use.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University created a 10-by-13-foot plexiglass room where they had six somewhat regular weed smokers sit there and smoke in the presence of six nonsmokers — people who had not used cannabis within at least six months prior to the experiment and who tested negative for other drugs and alcohol.

Too Much Pot: Growers Struggle With Glut Of Legal Weed

State data show that licensed growers had harvested 31,000 pounds of bud as of Thursday, but Washington's relatively few legal pot shops have sold less than one-fifth of that. Many of the state's marijuana users have stuck with the untaxed or much-lesser-taxed pot they get from black market dealers or unregulated medical dispensaries — limiting how quickly product moves off the shelves of legal stores.

"Every grower I know has got surplus inventory and they're concerned about it," said Scott Masengill, who has sold half of the 280 pounds he harvested from his pot farm in central Washington. "I don't know anybody getting rich."

Don Lemon Sparks Outrage With Marijuana Comment In Ferguson

The CNN anchor was describing the scene from outside the Ferguson police station Monday night, just moments after the announcement that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for killing unarmed teenager Michael Brown. Speaking with Anderson Cooper, Lemon reported hearing the sounds of gunfire and seeing protesters jumping on cars.

And then he said: "Obviously, there is the smell of marijuana in the air."

But to viewers at home, that wasn't obvious at all. The comments immediately sparked backlash on Twitter.

Marijuana Patient Sues After Firm Won't Hire Her

Christine Callaghan, who is studying textiles at the University of Rhode Island, sued Westerly-based Darlington Fabrics Corp. and its parent, the Moore Company, on Wednesday. The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing Callaghan, said it believes it's the first lawsuit of its kind in the state.

A lawyer for the company, Timothy Cavazza, said it had not yet been served with the lawsuit and it was company policy not to comment on litigation. He added that they were confident they acted in compliance with state and federal law and that the lawsuit would be dismissed.
