Obama To Issue Executive Order Cutting The Federal Government's Greenhouse Gas Emissions

President Obama on Thursday signed an executive order directing the federal government to cut its overall greenhouse-gas emissions by 40 percent over the next decade.

In a speech at the Department of Energy, the president said the initiative demonstrates the U.S. federal government will “lead by example” in the international fight against climate change.

“We’re proving it is possible to grow our economy robustly while at the same time doing the right thing for the environment and tackling climate change in a serious way,” Mr. Obama said.

“It’s true a future administration might try to reverse some of our policies. But I’ll be honest with you — the American people basically have a good heart and want to treat people fairly and every survey shows that if, in fact, somebody has come out and subjected themselves to a background check, registered, paid their taxes, the American people support allowing them to stay. So any future administration that tried to punish people for doing the right thing, I think, would not have the support of the American people,” Mr. Obama told a supportive crowd at a town hall meeting in Nashville.

Even before the full results of Tuesday’s elections came in, President Obama made plans to reach across the aisle and began to prepare for life with a Congress fully controlled by Republicans.

Administration officials said Tuesday night the president will meet with House and Senate leaders at the White House on Friday.
