Pro-Palestinian Students Heckle Cal-Davis Opponents With Cries Of 'Allahu Akbar'

Anti-Israel activists at the University of California, Davis heckled Jewish students and shouted “Allahu Akbar” at them during a vote last week on a resolution endorsing a boycott of the Jewish state, according to video of the event obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

The commotion erupted late Thursday evening as pro-Israel students attempted to counter a student government resolution to divest from Israel as part of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Activists waving Palestinian flags shouted at the Jewish and pro-Israel students as they left the meeting room ahead of an eight to two vote in favor of the divestment resolution, which is part of a larger movement by anti-Israel groups to attack Israel and pro-Israel students on campus.

U.S. Students Ramp Up BDS Movement In Wake Of Gaza War

NEW YORK – On Monday, Mia Warshofsky will start her sophomore year in Orlando, at the University of Central Florida. One of the first things the 19-year-old plans to do is launch chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine, two groups that advocate for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Warshofsky, who is Jewish and has not been to Israel, is eager to advocate for BDS on her 59,000-student campus, though she’s concerned about the reception she’ll face. “Because of the rise in anti-Semitism right now people get very frightened and I worry that the Zionist groups on campus will not be very happy with us. My biggest concern is people being antagonistic,” she said in an interview from Oakland, California, where she was attending a BDS Student Leadership Training conference co-sponsored by JVP and the American Friends Service Committee. 

In the aftermath of Operation Protective Edge, which leaders of BDS advocates refer to as a massacre of Palestinians in Gaza, groups like JVP, which has grown by nearly half over the summer, and SJP, with chapters on 114 campuses across the U.S., are ramping up their presence at universities and planning on introducing more BDS resolutions. Pro-Israel groups like Hillel, The American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC,] J Street U and the Israel on Campus Coalition are focusing their own student leader training on ways to respond to the Gaza emphasis.

“On those campuses which are politically active there will be more tension than there has been probably since the early 1970s,” said Rabbi Howard Alpert, CEO of Hillel of Greater Philadelphia, which covers 15 campuses including University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore. The 15 institutions are attended by roughly 12,000 Jewish students, of a total student population of about 100,000. Alpert spoke with Haaretz shortly after reviewing security protocols with his director of facilities. “There is scary [anti-Semitic] stuff that has happened in other places. One would be naïve or foolhardy to simply assume that it can’t happen on their home campus.”

Al Jazeera: Campaign To Boycott Israel Gains Ground

On July 8, 2014, the day Israel launched its most recent Gaza offensive, “Long Live Palestine boycott Israel”, a Buycottapp campaign that helps consumers avoid purchasing products seen to profit from Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, had attracted a mere 470 supporters. A little over a month later, with the Palestinian death toll creeping toward 2,000, and horrific images of dead and maimed Palestinians filling mainstream and social media platforms, “Long Live Palestine boycott Israel” had surpassed a quarter-million followers, making it the fastest growing campaign on Buycott’s platform.

That groundswell is just one measure of the growing reach of BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), a global, citizen-led movement that advocates using economic pressure to force Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian lands, tear down the West Bank barrier, grant full rights to Palestinians living in Israel and uphold the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

Launched in 2005 by Palestinian groups frustrated by the failure of Western governments to persuade Israel to tear down the West Bank barrier (deemed illegal by the International Criminal Court), the BDS movement harnesses citizen power to advance its goals. “It’s a way to put pressure on the Israeli government, similar to the South African anti-apartheid movement, when governments have been unwilling to do so, like our government has,” said Rebecca Vilkomerson, executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace, a nonprofit that spearheaded the US-based BDS coalitionWe Divest.

BDS advocates a three-pronged approach that includes boycotting products, companies and sporting, cultural and academic institutions seen as profiting from Israel’s violation of Palestinian human rights; divesting from corporations viewed as complicit with such policies; and sanctioning Israel.

Gaza: Boycott Israel Threats Mount--BDS Calls For Russian Style Sanctions

The Chairman of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement has urged the UK government to slap sanctions as scything as those being imposed on Russia against the Israeli state.

In an interview with IBTimes UK, Hugh Lanning said the tide of public and governmental opinion has turned against Israel and that BDS, the global lobby group campaigning to penalise Israel for its occupation of the Palestinian Territories, has enjoyed unprecedented support in recent weeks.

"In the past all the mainstream parties wouldn't countenance any discussions. The Labour Party of which I'm a member was very keen to not be associated with anything that said boycott. The glass ceiling has been broken with talk of the arms embargo and military trade.

"We get the feeling that people are anxious. Individuals who have been outraged by what they've seen want ways in which they can individually protest. Boycott actions are being seen as a way the person in the street can say: out with that," he said.

The groundswell of public opinion against Israel can be seen in countless examples of anti-Israel activity across the UK. Today it was reported that Buycott, an app that allows consumers to search for products linked to countries or companies, has gathered 350,000 supporters for two anti-Israel campaigns.

Rampant Anti-Semitism Is Flourishing Across The World

Sitting in my office almost forty floors above ground level in midtown Manhattan last week, I was astounded to be drawn away from my work by chants of “Free free Palestine” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” Even up in the clouds, the demonstrators’ voices were clear and loud, almost as if they were just outside my window.

Based on the level of violent protests taking place across the globe, the pro-Palestinians in New York seemed comparably tame – yet no less offensive. For if there is any question that chants of “from the river to the sea” are wishful thinking for the annihilation of the Jewish State of Israel, the calls for “Death to Israel” were anything but vague.

Domestically, pro-Palestinians are using Israel’s defensive military incursion into Gaza as an excuse to let loose on the Jews. In San Francisco, 300 anti-Israel protestors surrounded and threatened 30 peaceful pro-Israel demonstrators. In addition to the usual chants, they screamed, “Long live the intifada, we support the intifada,” calling for violent uprising against Israelis.
