Fourth Of July-Themed Al Jazeera Video That Mocks Americans As Fat, Gun-Toting Racists

 Al Jazeera’s digital media platform AJ+ posted a Fourth of July-themed video mocking Americans as fat, cheese-eating, gun-toting, pill-popping, racist porn watchers.

 While some on social media applauded the creation, others slammed the Qatar-owned network for using the holiday “to dump” on America.

 Social media users got particularly riled up by the criticism coming from the channel owned by Qatar — a country where stoning is a legal punishment under Shariah law, women have second class legal status, writers can be imprisoned for criticizing the emir and abuse of foreign laborers has been repeatedly criticized by human rights groups.

 The video is sarcastically titled “Americans Show Why USA Is The #1 Country In The World.”

Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, who ruled Haiti from 1971 until he fled the country in 1986, has died of a heart attack aged 63.

The death of Duvalier, who returned to Haiti in 2011 after 25 years of exile, was announced by Florence Guillaume Duperval, the nation's health minister, on Saturday.

President Michel Martelly, reacting on Twitter, called him "an authentic son of Haiti" and sent his "sincere condolences to the family and to the nation".

"Love and reconciliation must always prevail over our internal quarrels. May he rest in peace," wrote Martelly, who said he was paying tribute to Duvalier "despite our quarrels and our differences."

Duvalier became the world's youngest president at the age of 19 when in 1971 he inherited power from his father, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier.

Israel Slams Sweden Over Palestine Pledge

Israel has summoned Sweden's ambassador in Tel Aviv after the Scandinavian country's newly elected prime minister pledged that his government would recognise a Palestinian state.

Israel's foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said Stefan Lofven was rushing to a decision without understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Avigdor Lieberman said that he regrets that the new prime minister was in a hurry to make statements on Sweden's position regarding recognition of a Palestinian state, apparently before he had time even to study the issue in depth," Lieberman's office quoted him as saying, in a statement issued late on Saturday.

It added that Sweden's ambassador to Israel, Carl Magnus Nesser, "will be invited for a talk at the foreign ministry in Jerusalem," but did not say when.

A Swedish foreign ministry spokesman said Nesser had been summoned to the ministry on Monday.

Social Democrat leader Lofven - who narrowly won last month's general election - said in his inaugural speech on Friday that his government wanted to bolster a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

No timeframe for the formal recognition of a Palestinian state has been announced. The decision does not need parliamentary approval to be enforced.

Al Jazeera: Campaign To Boycott Israel Gains Ground

On July 8, 2014, the day Israel launched its most recent Gaza offensive, “Long Live Palestine boycott Israel”, a Buycottapp campaign that helps consumers avoid purchasing products seen to profit from Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, had attracted a mere 470 supporters. A little over a month later, with the Palestinian death toll creeping toward 2,000, and horrific images of dead and maimed Palestinians filling mainstream and social media platforms, “Long Live Palestine boycott Israel” had surpassed a quarter-million followers, making it the fastest growing campaign on Buycott’s platform.

That groundswell is just one measure of the growing reach of BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), a global, citizen-led movement that advocates using economic pressure to force Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian lands, tear down the West Bank barrier, grant full rights to Palestinians living in Israel and uphold the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

Launched in 2005 by Palestinian groups frustrated by the failure of Western governments to persuade Israel to tear down the West Bank barrier (deemed illegal by the International Criminal Court), the BDS movement harnesses citizen power to advance its goals. “It’s a way to put pressure on the Israeli government, similar to the South African anti-apartheid movement, when governments have been unwilling to do so, like our government has,” said Rebecca Vilkomerson, executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace, a nonprofit that spearheaded the US-based BDS coalitionWe Divest.

BDS advocates a three-pronged approach that includes boycotting products, companies and sporting, cultural and academic institutions seen as profiting from Israel’s violation of Palestinian human rights; divesting from corporations viewed as complicit with such policies; and sanctioning Israel.

Al Jazeera America Excels In Covering Killings Of Middle East Teens --More fair and balanced than expected

 The grisly discovery Monday of the bodies of three Israeli teens who had been abducted June 12 as they hitchhiked home from a West Bank settlement yeshiva set off a week of mounting violence in the region.

 Israel blamed Hamas and promised and delivered retribution in the West Bank, blowing up the homes of the alleged murderers and launching dozens of air strikes. Hamas threatened back, saying that “the gates of hell would open” if Israel went too far.

 On Wednesday, a Palestinian teen was abducted and killed, and a Palestinian official blamed “extremist Jewish settlers” as Arabs and Israelis battled in the streets of East Jerusalem.

 It was a complex and highly emotional story, and no one on American TV did a better job of telling it than Al Jazeera America, the new kid on the cable news block that will celebrate its first anniversary next month.

 It has been a rough year for the organization, with lower ratings than even some of its harshest critics predicted and layoffs in April. But if anyone with an open mind was looking for evidence as to how the presence of Al Jazeera America enriches the landscape of broadcast news and offers viewers the chance to be better informed about the Middle East, it was on display last week.

 Al Jazeera America’s coverage was in full swing by 8 p.m. Monday, hours after the bodies were found. It featured correspondent Nick Schifrin reporting from Gaza City on the retaliatory air strikes by the Israeli Air Force. As always, the Al Jazeera cameras gave viewers a sense of being in the street as close to the action as anyone would want to be.
