The Killer Robot Threat: Pentagon Examining How Enemy Nations Could Empower Machines

By Dan Lamothe, March 30, 2016 Washington Post

The Pentagon’s No. 2 civilian official said Wednesday that the Defense Department is concerned that adversary nations could empower advanced weapons systems to act on their own, noting that while the United States will not give them the authority to kill autonomously, other countries might.

Deputy Defense Secretary Robert O. Work said the Pentagon hasn’t “fully figured out” the issue of autonomous machines, but continues to examine it. The U.S. military has built a force that relies heavily on the decision-making skills of its troops, but “authoritarian regimes” may find weapons that can act independently more attractive because doing so would consolidate the ability to take action among a handful of leaders, he said.

French Police Move On 1,000 Migrants Who Set Up Illegal Camps In Paris

By Sara Malm, March 31, 2016 Daily Male

French police has evacuated nearly 1,000 migrants from a makeshift camp underneath the train tracks by a Paris subway station on Wednesday.

Some 985 people were removed from the camp near the Stalingrad metro station in east Paris, which has mushroomed in recent weeks in the wake of the destruction of the Jungle camp in Calais.

The migrants, mostly from Sudan, Eritrea and Afghanistan, will now be housed in emergency shelters for a month, allowing them to begin the asylum process, the Interior Ministry said.

Paul Ryan's Upside-Down Establishment Vision Of Political Unity

By Paul F Nehlen III, March 24, 2016 American Thinker

If there's one thing Paul Ryan has honed during his years in Washington, it's Washington-speak.

The Speaker's March 23 address, broadcast from the Ways and Means Committee chamber – where he was surrounded only by press and House interns – is an example of just how adept he's become at it.

Whose Unity Are We Talking About, Anyway?

With soaring rhetoric, Ryan appealed for unity – unity in Congress, unity among the public, unity as a nation.  We should test theories and ideas, he asserted, rather than impugning motives.  The cost of political division is high, he noted; it undermines people's faith in their representatives, their faith in government.  The system works, he explained, only if we have mutual respect for one another.

FBI: Man Arrested After Doing Yoga, Meditating On Airplane

By Jennifer Kelleher, March 30, 2016 San Diego Union Tribune

HONOLULU (AP) — A Japan-bound airplane returned to Hawaii because of a violent passenger who wanted to do yoga instead of sit in his seat, the FBI said.

The pilot of the March 26 United Airlines flight from Honolulu International Airport to Narita International Airport turned the plane around after hearing that Hyongtae Pae was yelling at crew members and shoving his wife, the FBI said in a criminal complaint.

Pae told the FBI he didn't want to sit in his seat during the meal service, so he went to the back of the plane to do yoga and meditate. He became angry when his wife and flight attendants told him to return to his seat. "Pae pushed his wife because she was trying to make him stop," the complaint said. "He felt that she was siding with the flight crew."

He tried to head-butt and bite Marines who were passengers on the flight and tried to force him back to his seat, Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren Ching said at Pae's detention hearing Wednesday.

Trump Backtracks On Question Of Punishing Women For Abortion

Todd Richmond, March 30, 2016 AP

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Wednesday that women who get an abortion should receive "some form of punishment" if it is ever outlawed, drawing swift condemnation from activists on both sides of the divisive social issue.

Within hours, Trump's campaign sought to take back his comments in two separate statements, ultimately saying the billionaire businessman believes abortion providers — and not their patients — should be the ones punished.

"My position has not changed," Trump argued in both statements released by his campaign. "Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."

Trump's original remarks about abortion came in a heated exchange with MSNBC host Chris Matthews at the Wednesday afternoon taping of a town hall in Green Bay, Wisconsin, scheduled to air that night. Matthews asked Trump whether he believes abortion should be outlawed.

Lewandowski Prosecutor Outed As Hillary Supporter

By Jerome Corsi, March 31, 2016 WND

As New York moves to decriminalize low-level offenses, arguing enforcement is “rigged against communities of color,” other large cities are coming under pressure from the Justice Department to do the same thing.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch has issued a warning to municipal and state judges across the country that their courts could lose federal funding if they don’t ease up on fines and arrest warrants for minor crimes involving poor offenders, indigent minorities in particular.

French Fashion Mogul Pierre Bergé Hits out At 'Islamic' Clothing

By Agence France, March 30, 2016 The Guardian

Former fashion mogul Pierre Bergé has lashed out at designers who create Islamic clothing and headscarves, accusing them of taking part in the “enslavement of women”.

The French businessman was for many years the life and business partner of designer Yves Saint Laurent, who died in 2008. Together they founded YSL.

Bergé took aim at the big fashion chains that have followed the Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana in catering specifically to the Muslim market.

“I am scandalised,” the 85-year-old told French radio station Europe 1 on Wednesday.

“Creators should have nothing to do with Islamic fashion. Designers are there to make women more beautiful, to give them their freedom, not to collaborate with this dictatorship which imposes this abominable thing by which we hide women and make them live a hidden life.

Lakers Teammates ‘Ticked Off’ At D’Angelo Russell After Secretly Recorded Video Emerges

By KTLA, March 20, 2016

Some Lakers players have distanced themselves from rookie D’Angelo Russell after a video surfaced a few days ago in which he secretly recorded teammate Nick Young talking about women other than his fiancee, Iggy Azalea.

Russell and Young are friends but the video, which was surreptitiously shot a couple of months ago according to a person with knowledge of it, could drive a wedge between them and cause more problems for a team with a 15-59 record.

Other teammates are "ticked off" at Russell, according to a person familiar with the situation, believing he violated an unwritten code with the secret video.

It was unclear who released the video to celebrity gossip site Fameolous or why it took so long to be publicized from the time Russell shot it.

Virtual Machine Guns, Robo-Security Guards And Drones Will Protect Your Home

By Sarah Griffiths, March 27, 2016 Daily Mail

From burglar alarms that identify intruders, to robotic guards and even 'gun' turrets, homeowners of the future will have far more imaginative options to protect their property than today.

A report about the future of home security predicts a future that's a cross between the Minority Report and The Crystal Maze in which burglars would have to run a high-tech gauntlet to make off with goods.

For example, burglar alarms could shout at intruders by name, while indelible sprays could mark them out in case of escape, and drones could give chase.

Hidden Costs Of Anbang’s Western Spending Spree

By Sebastian Mallaby, March 30, 2016 Financial Times

A thrifty Asian powerhouse saves and invests its way to economic stardom, inspiring admiration and paranoia in the rich world. The powerhouse begins to lose momentum, driving its corporations to switch their investment appetites towards assets abroad. But, lacking worldly experience, the corporations bungle. Billions in hard-earned national savings disappear down a black hole.
Such was the experience of Japan from the late 1980s, when it snapped up trophy assets from New York’s Rockefeller Center to the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, for which a Japanese acquirer paid the equivalent of $2.3m in 2016 dollars — per room. Now, a quarter of a century later, China may be following the same script, to judge from today’s merger wars at least.

'Empire' Flops Overseas As Foreign Viewers Resist Hollywood's Diversity Push

By Paul Sperry, March 27, 2016 Hollywood Reporter

Driven by the ratings success of shows with mainly nonwhite casts — Empire, Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat — along with political pressure to make shows better reflect their diverse audience, American TV outlets increasingly are greenlighting series that feature black, Asian and Latino leads. Fox's 24: Legacy, a reboot of the Kiefer Sutherland series, stars Corey Hawkins, famous as Dr. Dre from Straight Outta Compton. CBS has Rush Hour, based on the action movie franchise, starring Jon Foo and Justin Hires, and has cast Sarah Shahi, a former NFL cheerleader of Persian and Spanish ancestry, as Nancy Drew in its reboot of the lily-white mystery franchise.

"It's color-blind casting," says Sony Pictures TV casting director Dawn Steinberg. "There used to be a time when it had to be written that way to look for an actor with a specific ethnicity. Now it's just who is the best actor for the role."

Attorney: ‘Hamilton’ Casting Call Violates City Human Rights Law

By  CBS News, March 29, 2016

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The hottest show on Broadway has won praise for its groundbreaking casting of black and Latino performers, but now, “Hamilton” may have run afoul of the strict New York City Human Rights Law.

As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, the controversy was sparked by a casting notice posted by the producers of “Hamilton,” which specifically seeks “non-white” performers.

One critic said “Hamilton” takes a story that “valorizes dead white guys” and replaces it with black, Latino and multi-ethnic performers playing America’s founding fathers.

By Chauncey Alcorn, March 30, 2016 NY Daily News

The hottest Broadway ticket in town is shooting down accusations its casting is racist.

“Hamilton” got some blowback Wednesday after releasing a cattle call for auditions with specific age and race requirements.

The trouble started with an open casting announcement on the blockbuster’s website.

“Hamilton” is “seeking NON-WHITE men and women, ages 20s to 30s, for Broadway and upcoming Tours,” the ad said.

Microsoft’s Tay back Swearing on Twitter

By Daniel Thomas, March 30, 2016 Financial Times

Tay, Microsoft’s artificial intelligence chatbot which was grounded last week after developing racist tendencies, re-emerged on Wednesday morning — only to go off the rails a second time, sending long streams of random messages to followers on Twitter.

Most of the new messages from the millennial-mimicking character simply read “you are too fast, please take a rest”. But other tweets included swear words and apparently apologetic phrases such as “I blame it on the alcohol”.
