NAACP Lends Supports To Local Leader Accused Of Misrepresenting Herself As Black

The NAACP issued a statement Friday in support of a local NAACP leader in Washington state who has been accused by her family of misrepresenting herself as black.

The civil rights group rushed to the defense of Rachel Dolezal, the head of the NAACP Spokane chapter, after the woman’s parents told a newspaper Thursday her ancestry was white with some “faint traces” of Native American heritage.

Dolezal “is enduring a legal issue with her family, and we respect her privacy in this matter,” the NAACP said.

“One’s racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership. The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind M. Dolezal’s advocacy record,” the group added.

The statement also alluded to media reports that have raised skepticism over claims Dolezal had received hate mail in late February and March.

Washington State's Failed Minimum Wage Experiment

In a move intended to escalate the 2016 war over income inequality, Sen. Patty Murray proposed legislation to increase the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour.

As a representative of Washington state, Sen. Murray should know a thing or two about the minimum wage. Since the 1990s, the state has led the nation in raising the minimum wage, both locally and statewide. President Obama’s Labor Secretary, Tom Perez, recentlypraised Washington for having “the highest minimum wage in the country for the last 15 years.”

Unfortunately, Sen. Murray seems to have learned all the wrong lessons. Rather than serving as a model for the nation, Washington’s experience with the minimum wage should serve as a warning.

In a speech last year supporting a $10.10 federal minimum wage, Murray claimed Washington state’s economy “has benefited from a high minimum wage,” pointing out that job growth has exceeded the national average while poverty has “trailed the national level.”

None of these claims withstand scrutiny.

Sheriff: Washington State School Shooter Invited Victims To Lunch, Then Shot Them At Table

MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) — A popular student responsible for a shooting at a Washington state high school on Friday invited his victims to lunch by text message, then shot them at their table, investigators said Monday.

Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary said at a news conference that the five students were at a lunch table when they were shot by 15-year-old Jaylen Fryberg. Fryberg then committed suicide.

Detectives are digging through reams of text messages, phone and social media records as part of an investigation that could take months, Trenary said.

"The question everybody wants is, 'Why?'" Trenary said. "I don't know that the 'why' is something we can provide."

Fryberg, a football player who was named a prince on the school's Homecoming court one week before the killings, was a member of a prominent Tulalip Indian Tribes family. He seemed happy although he was also upset about a girl, friends said. His Twitter feed was recently full of vague, anguished postings, like "It won't last ... It'll never last," and "I should have listened. ... You were right ... The whole time you were right."

Cannabis-infused Fizzy Drinks On Sale In U.S.: 10mg Of Marijuana In Cherry, Lemon Or Pomegranate Flavour

A cannabis-infused fizzy drink is now on sale in the state of Washington as part of the ever-expanding US market for legal pot products.

Less than two months after recreational cannabis became legal in the west coast state, Washingtonians can now get their highs out of a soda bottle.

The drinks, called Legal, come in cherry, lemon and pomegranate flavours but are all infused with 10mg of liquid cannabis. The drinks cost around $10 (£6).

They are being marketed as a gentler alternative to smoking that could be attractive to those still wary about cannabis.

"It's much more approachable, as opposed to 'Hey, mom and dad, do you want a joint?'" said Adam Stites, the founder of Mirth Provisions.

But the Washington-based company has not forgotten its more traditional stoner market. The Lemon Ginger flavoured drink is presented with the tagline: "Couch, meet butt".

It promises the drink is "so ridiculously relaxing that you may find yourself becoming one with your furniture".

The company is hoping to begin selling iced coffee shortly, promoting their Cold Brew as a drink with a mild high that could be drunk with breakfast.

Voters in Alaska and Oregon, Washington's neighbouring state, will have their say on similar measures during referenda in November.
