Verdict Reached In 'Knockout Game' Case

By Breaking News Staff, Aug. 26, 2014, Whio.com

DAYTON — One of three area teens accused of attacking and robbing two men -- one homeless -- in the Spring as part of the so-called "Knockout Game" was found guilty on two counts of robbery Tuesday.

Deontae Howard,17, of Dayton was tried as an adult for his role in the separate attacks; he's scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 9.

"This defendant attacked two unsuspecting victims with the intention of knocking them unconscious with a single punch and taking whatever money they had," Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said in a press release. "We will be asking the court to sentence the defendant to the maximum consecutive sentence of 16 years."

The two other suspects -- 14- and 15-year-old boys -- in the case are charged with one count each of robbery for allegedly assaulting the two men. In each attack, the teens sucker-punched the men in the back of the head in an attempt to knock them out. Heck filed motions to transfer all three juveniles to be tried as adults, however, a juvenile court judge ruled against transferring the other two teens to adult court.
