Trump Dumped! Univision Drops Miss USA Pageant Over Mexican Immigrant Remarks

Univision has elected to end its business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization due to part-owner Donald Trump’s “recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants,” the company told TheWrap on Thursday via a statement.

The broadcaster “will not be … working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization,” the entertainment group continued — that includes no longer airing the July 12 Miss USA pageant as planned.

“At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country,” the company concluded.

550 Buyouts, Layoffs Imminent At Turner; HLN, CNN Among Cuts

An individual with knowledge of the network's plans tell TheWrap a large portion are expected at the two cable channels

Some 550 buyouts are to be offered at Time Warner's Turner network this week, including a large number of those at CNN and HLN, which will lead to layoffs if they are not taken voluntarily, according to an individual with knowledge of the network's plans.

The buyouts will come across the Turner division, with a couple of hundred expected at CNN and HLN, the individual said.

A CNN spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

News of the buyouts comes shortly after Turner Broadcasting System CEO John Martin revealed in an internal memo Tuesday that corporate restructuring was coming in the next two months.

“Division leaders now are reviewing the working groups’ reports on their respective areas of oversight,” Martin wrote. “Over the coming weeks, they will work with me to finalize the organizational changes we will implement.”

Time Warner-owned Turner is the parent company of HLN.

Martin's note also stated that the company will ”start 2015 a more streamlined, nimble and efficient company focused on driving programming, monetization and innovation, in a culture that emphasizes and rewards continuous improvement.”

CNN chief Jeff Zucker called in to a Turner news meeting last week to elaborate on Martin's memo. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution posted a partial transcription on Sunday.

“We now have a sense of what Turner is expecting from CNN,” Zucker said on the call. “I am working with the senior management team at CNN to figure out what this means for us. This will result in changes and what we do and what we stop doing.”

The stand-up comic did not disappoint in monologue welcoming viewers to “the black World Cup”

Chris Rock opened the 2014 BET Awards with all the weaponry he needs — a microphone, a stage and eight minutes of everyone's undivided attention.

The world-class stand-up comic greeted the crowd with the following: “Welcome to the 2014 BET Awards — the black World Cup.” Rock then recapped the year that was in black entertainment, beginning with 2014's biggest music stories.

On Solange Knowles’ now-infamous attack on her brother-in-law Jay Z in an elevator, Rock joked: “Solange hit the right rapper … Jay's a businessman now, he can't just go punching girls in the face — he's got a meeting with Nabisco in the morning.”

On Dr. Dre getting $3 billion dollars for selling Beats by Dre to Apple, the comic summed up an old hip-hop beef: “It looks like the West Coast won — sorry Puff.”

Next, Rock hit TV and film. First, social commentary on the small screen: “A lot of people think ‘Scandal’ is a hit because of Kerry [Washington, a nominee] — and she's great in it — but the real reason that ‘Scandal's’ a hit is because every Thursday at 10 o'clock there's a white president.”
