President Obama, U.S. Military To Leave 8,400 Troops in Afghanistan

President Barack Obama plans to leave around 8,400 U.S. troops in Afghanistan when he finishes his term, people briefed on the plan said Wednesday, an increase from his previous plan that reflects the difficulty for the U.S. in drawing down the conflict.

Obama had planned to drop troop levels from 9,800 to 5,500 troops by the end of 2016. But a Taliban resurgence has led Washington to rethink its exit strategy.

The individuals briefed on the plan spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to disclose the numbers before the president’s announcement.

Obama Defends Likening Republicans To Iranian Hardliners On Nuclear Deal

President Obama stood by his charge that Iranian hardliners are making “common cause” with Republican lawmakers in opposing the landmark nuclear deal with Iran, insisting that such an accusation “is absolutely true, factually.”

“Inside of Iran, the people most opposed to the deal are the Revolutionary Guard, the Quds Force, hardliners who are implacably opposed to any cooperation with the international community,” Obama said in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria broadcast Sunday. He had made the accusation earlier in the week, charging Republicans with opposing the deal for political reasons.

“The reason that Mitch McConnell and the rest of the folks in his caucus who oppose this jumped out and opposed it before they even read it, before it was even posted, is reflective of a ideological commitment not to get a deal done,” Obama said, naming the Senate Republican leader from Kentucky.

Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), who has all but been anointed the successor to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nevada), exploited the media focus on the GOP presidential debate last night to release a press statement announcing that he would be voting against the Iran nuclear deal when it comes to the Senate floor. This decision, according to MSNBC's Luke Russert, is a "public act of being disloyal" to President Obama. In an Instagram posted Friday, rapper Wale asks the first lady, “If you had the opportunity to have a different occupation, what would it be?”

“I would be Beyonce,” she responds.

A public supporter of President Obama, Beyonce sang the national anthem at the president’s second inauguration in 2013, and she and husband Jay-Z teamed up on fundraising efforts throughout the 2012 campaign.
