Pope Says He Wasn’t Offered By ‘Communist Crucifix’

By Nicole Winfield, July 13, 2015 AP

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) -- Pope Francis says he wasn't offended by the "Communist crucifix" given to him by Bolivian President Evo Morales during his South American pilgrimage.

Morales surprised the pontiff with the unusual gift, a crucifix attached to a hammer and sickle, when Francis arrived in La Paz on Wednesday.

The crucifix was a replica of one designed by a Jesuit priest, the Rev. Luis Espinal, who was tortured and killed by Bolivian paramilitary squads in 1980. Francis prayed at the site of Espinal's assassination upon his arrival in Bolivia.

Pope Rails Against Unbridled Capitalism, 'Idolatry Of Money'

By Philip Pullella and Daniela Desantis, July 11, 2015 My Fox News

ASUNCION (Reuters) - Pope Francis appealed to world leaders on Saturday to seek a new economic model to help the poor, and to shun policies that "sacrifice human lives on the altar of money and profit."

It was the second time during his trip to South America that Francis, the first pope from the region, used a major speech to excoriate unbridled capitalism and champion the rights of the poor.

In Bolivia last Thursday, he urged the downtrodden to change the world economic order, denouncing a "new colonialism" by agencies that impose austerity programs and calling for the poor to have the "sacred rights" of labor, lodging and land.

Pope Francis Apologises For Catholic Crimes Against Indigenous Peoples During The Colonisation Of The Americas

By Zachary Davies Boren, July, 10, 2015, Independent

On his first papal visit to his native Latin America, Pope Francis issued an historic apology to the native peoples of the Americas for sins committed by the Catholic Church during the conquest of the continents.

At a social justice summit in Bolivia, at which many indigenous groups and the country's first-ever indigenous president Evo Morales were in attendance, the first-ever Latin American pope "humbly" asked for forgiveness.

In his speech, Francis said that many Latin American Catholic leaders have previously addressed the "grave sins committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God".

He also recalled that, during a visit to the Dominican Republic in 1992, Pope John Paul II had apologised for the "pain and suffering" over the hundreds of years since the Church arrived at American shores.

Pope Francis' Out Of Touch Climate Change Warning

By Michael Goodwin, Jun. 21, 2015, NYPost.com

As luck would have it, I was about to jump into the pope’s new environmental encyclical when I stumbled on an old story out of Israel. It seems that archaeological researchers found plaque on the teeth of people who lived 400,000 years ago.

One researcher told the Times of Israel that the plaque contained soot, indicating that early humans suffered smoke inhalation when they cooked meat inside caves. “As in other cases, progress was associated with environmental damage,” the researcher said.

Too bad Pope Francis didn’t see the story before releasing his severe critique of modern life. The history lesson might have tempered his approach.

You can call Francis’ environmental treatise bold, provocative and even visionary. You can call it anything you want — except well informed and wise. It is neither.

At a time when blood is flowing like rivers around the globe, when Christians are being persecuted and when genocide and oppression are spreading, the world’s foremost religious figure ventures too far afield and gets lost in the socialist weeds.

The Pope Joins The EU In A Sad World Of Make-Believe

By Christopher Booker, Jun. 20, 2015, The Telegraph

What has a Papal Encyclical calling on the world to end its use of fossil fuels and to pray to God for the success of the global “climate summit” in December got in common with the Greek euro crisis, the ominous rift between the West and Russia, and the shambles Europe is making over the desperation of African and Syrian refugees to find safety this side of the Mediterranean? They are all different aspects of the two greatest acts of political make-believe of our time, so all-pervasive that it is hard for us to grasp just how much effect they are having on all our lives.

When future historians come to look back on our age, few things will puzzle them more than the extent to which our politics became so dominated and bedevilled by two belief-systems, each based on an obsessive attempt to force into being an immensely complicated political construct which defied economic, psychological and scientific reality.
