WV Teacher Threatened With Fine For Violating Michelle O’s School Snack Rules

By Kyle Olson, Jun. 1, 2015, EAGNews.org

WILLIAMSON, W.V. – Students and parents are rallying to the defense of a teacher who is accused of violating federal school snack rules.

The Williamson PreK-8 teacher, who was not identified, would give her students “wrapped candy” as a reward for their hard work and good behavior.

Because the practice was an alleged violation of the federal rules championed by first lady Michelle Obama, Mingo County Schools Director of Child Nutrition Kay Maynard “placed a call to officials at the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) to report the incident,” the Williamson Daily News reports.

Maynard also spoke to Williamson PreK-8 principal Shannon Blackburn, telling him about the possibility of a monetary fine for the teacher.

When news spread, parents and student mobilized, collecting pennies to pay the potential fine on the teacher’s behalf.

This menu of completely free lunch items certainly sounds delicious and nutritious. Also, to be clear, it’s for a single day, not the entire week.

Michelle Obama's War On Bake Sales Leaves School Programs Scrambling

By Molly Wharton, Aug. 6, 2014, Nationalreview.com

A school board president in Wisconsin has decided to opt out of a program that provides federal funding for school meals because of new federal guidelines that are restricting what foods can be served in schools, both in and out of the cafeteria.

“These guidelines seemed to be overly onerous; they weren’t meeting our community standard,” Rick Petfalski of the Muskego-Norway School District tellsNational Review. “These are decisions that are best made at the local level.”

Guidelines implemented two years ago that determined what could be served in school cafeterias had already led students to cut back on the number of meals they were buying, and students were leaving the lunchroom hungry. But new guidelines that would have taken effect on July 1 pushed the federal control even further. The regulations “stepped out of the lunch room and into bake sales and concessions,” he explained.

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and the Let’s Move! campaign, both of which are championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, were launched to reduce childhood obesity through federal regulation. According to The Wall Street Journal, the law overhauled nutrition standards that affect more than 30 million children.

The nutrition standards, which cover schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program, do not just determine which foods can be served for lunch in the cafeteria. As of July 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Smart Snacksstandard will also determine nutritional standards for all foods and beverages sold during the school day in vending machines and even student bake sales or fundraisers.

Leah Barkoukis, May 27, 2014, Townhall.com

I know, the last thing you’d expect from the Obamas is hypocrisy. Alas, I bring you yet another example, this time regarding school lunches. First Lady Michelle Obama has been widely criticized among hungry students across the U.S., a result of school meal nutrition standards that she successfully lobbied for in 2010. Twitchy has done a great job capturing the reactions and photos to some of these lunches and it’s not pretty (click here, here, and here for examples). But CNS News decided to dig a little deeper. What exactly are Michelle O’s daughters eating at lunch? Is it in any way comparable to the lunches in our nation’s public schools? Obviously, the answer is no:

With public school students using #ThanksMichelleto tweet photos of their skimpy, stomach-turning school lunches, I decided to look at what Michelle Obama's daughters are served at Sidwell Friendsschool, and it turns out the girls dine on lunches from menus designed by chefs.

While the Obama daughters have enjoyed dishes like chicken coconut soup, local butternut squash soup, crusted tilapia, they also get their fill of what Mrs. Obama might consider junk food.

This week, for example, they'll enjoy meatball subs, BBQ wings, and ice cream, in addition to chicken curry, deviled egg salad and the intriguing "Chef's Choice."

Sidwell Friends has even been rated the #1 School Lunch program in America.
